A 20 minute jam with the Korg Monologue, Arturia MicroFreak, Korg Volca FM and Novation Circuit.
UPDATE 2020-01-12: This track is part of my "Silver Glass" album on Bandcamp: waveformer42.ba...
UPDATE 2019-12-20: Patches for Korg Monologue and ZOOM-MS70CDR are included in the text below.
The MicroFreak is on chord duty, using a custom patch based on the SuperWave oscillator, and LFO modulating cutoff frequency, and a looping cycling envelope modulating both cutoff frequency directly and the LFO speed. I'm loving the modulation matrix on this thing. The Zoom MS-70CDR really does wonders with the rather simple MicroFreak patch, adding a phaser and delays to spread the chord out in a wide stereo image.
Korg Monologue is used for solos and some sequences, with vibrato, tremolo, delay and reverb on the effects side.
The VolcaFM plays an arpeggiated sequence of short melodic and percussive sounds, with a huge dose of delays and reverb, as more of a background ambience. Reminds me a bit of the "Universe" patch on the Korg M1.
The Circuit provides drums, percussion, bass and some more melodig patterns.
No Midi connections. Sequencers on all 4 synths/groovebox are set to the same tempo, and I just start and stop the sequencers manually.
The audio is recorded on a Korg KP2S and normalized in Audacity. Video is recorded on iPhoneX. Audio and video is synchronized in DaVinci Resolve 15.
Gear:
Korg Monologue
Arturia MicroFreak
Korg Volca FM
Novation Circuit
3 x Zoom MS-70CDR

Mintbox Mixer - KP2S
Midi: No Midi connections, manual sync of Circuit, MicroFreak, Volca FM and Monologue
Effects:

You discovered beautiful gentle sounds in the Freak!!! Wow!!! This video and your gear laid out, is a visual lesson in synth recording...look at those CDR's one for every synth...and the sound you are creating...gorgeous from this configuration. I have been sound designing, composing, recording, performing for 50 years on keyboards/organs/pianos....I am just in awe of this video.

I watched a video by Alba Ecstasy where he explained how he played without using MIDI sync and started sequencers and arpeggiators by ear. It makes for a much simpler setup, and it’s not as hard as it sounds to sync manually. The clocks on modern synths are in general very stable and do not drift much.

Wonderrrrful and inspiring! But one thing I just don’t understand: how can you make the microfreak (and I guess the volca) follow these chord changes? The most limiting thing I experience working out of the box is that I can only make modal music (one chord for the whole time) . How do you achieve the chord changes?

Really nice tune. I was wondering, why don't you share a MIDI clock across all devices to keep them in sync? Wouldn't that be easier than starting and syncing manually?
@Waveformer
@Waveformer 4 жыл бұрын
Dinant Riks Well, I don’t have a central Midi brain/sequencer driving everything. And I’m alternating between playing sequences and playing manually on both the MicroFreak and the Monologue, and not everything is planned out in advance. So until I get a Digitakt or a Deluge to control everything, this is the easiest way for me to do it, so far. But I’m constantly learning 😀.
@Arperture
@Arperture 4 жыл бұрын
@@Waveformer You could easily sync up the Circuit via MIDI into the Monologue or the Freak and then send sync clock to the other two devices over 1/8 cables... but I really kinda like the way this flows without the hard quantization. It's much more organic this way.

I like how many of Pink Floyd’s songs are like a journey with different parts and themes that vary throughout the song. And I like long songs. And have a long term goal of making the solos I play on a synth be as varied and full of nuances as a solo played on a guitar or a saxophone. I have a long way to go :-).
