I also have the KronosX 61. I like it a lot. OASYS does have a better interface, but the Kronos has more samples and features....and is quite portable.

External USB drive. I back up everything on the OASYS drive to there. One day your OASYS drive will fail or need reformatting. Backup of your own samples and programs is crucial to recovery. To use, just plug it in to one of the USB ports. The drive needs to be FAT 32 (or 16) format. If it isn't, then format it - either with your computer, or your OASYS can do this - DISK mode, select the right drive (DRIVE SELECT), press the UTILITY tab, then FORMAT from the dropdown selection menu.

It really is designed well. Lots of metal. The screen is amazing, LEDs the sliders and knobs, and It has a lot of inputs and outputs, which I really like.

@@scoopicman Is the monitor vertically adjustable? A must in my humble opinion if you don`t want to get your neck hecked. The monitor is bigger and in front of the composer. Good! How many tracks has the sequencer ? A synth workstation should be designed fancy, elegant AND ergonomic. (NOT like a black coffin in which Kronos the second is buried in)

@@TheDalien Yes, the monitor is adjustable. It can tilt higher up than I have it in the video. It can lay flat, or anything in between. The sequencer is the same as on the Kronos, though the Kronos sequencer added higher beat resolution and some other bits. 16 MIDI and 16 audio tracks. While I like it, it can feel like quite a step back, if you're used to computer DAWs.

No, that's the OASYS, but the Kronos had most of the same combis and programs when it first released.

Oh great! Thanks! That really clears things up for me. I was wondering why the hell I couldn't save some of the patches I downloaded, to certain banks. Now I understand. The Kronos (& probably the OASYS too) is really more "complex" than "complicated". It just has soooo many features. The "Quick Start Guide alone is 28 pages, while the Parameter Guide (5th Edition) is 1,127 pages long! That's like half is long as the Health Care Bill, LOL. Anyway, thanks for your reply & for your help.

For DX7 patches, go to Korg Forums dot com and click downloads, under Kronos. Select "DX7" 200,000 patches file. Unzip it on your computer and put it on a USB drive (FAT 32 or 16) to plug into Kronos. Press DISK button, LOAD mode. Select the DX7 folder and OPEN it. Load any file ending in .SYX. 32 programs at a time to an EXi bank (not HD-1). Note that DX7 data includes TX7, DX1, DX5, TX816. TX802, DX7II, DX7s have some different parameters and will not load.

@guitarharpsichord These units are very similar. Kronos has disk streaming for the 4 gig pianos and "ROM" sounds. It also has a new electric piano model. There is a Set List function and the HD recorder can record at 24 bit, as opposed to 16 bit on OASYS. OASYS has more inputs/outputs, larger tilt screen and nicer sliders/knobs with LEDs that let you know what your settings are. Up to 1.5 gigs of user sampling space available. Slightly more poly with most engines, but same fx, sound, etc.

HD-1 uses samples (horns, strings, drums) from ROM, RAM and EXs ("s" meaning sample) banks. EXi ("i" meaning instrument) refers to a specialized synth engine, like MOD-7, PolySix, MS20, STR-1, CX-3. What is confusing is that the new EXi engines, EP-1 (electric piano) and SGX-1 (Austrian, German, Japanese pianos) use samples with whatever new synthesis technique that makes them more expressive. You can change the bank type in GLOBAL. EXI banks= Int A, User B,C,D,E,F. HD-1=Int B,C,D,E,F,User A.

The M3 has a higher res Sequencer with extra interface features, Drum Tracks, optional Radias synth with Formant Motion.

@guitarharpsichord They can get used up quickly in Combination or even layered Programs with poly-unison on. This is typical of most workstations. The sample based workstations - M3, Motif, Fantom offer 120-128 note polyphony; Kronos' HD-1 (rompler engine) is a little better, up to140 note poly. Some Kronos engines, like MS-20 and STR-1 only go up to 40 notes, because it takes more processing power to run them. At least the PolySix is 180 notes and the AL-1 is 80, which is very respectable.

@alphasxsignal No, the keyboards, displays, etc. are not the same. The consensus seems to be that the OASYS is superior hardware (better build, bigger screen, more inputs/outputs, mic preamps built in...) and that the Kronos is superior software (OS is being updated, supports streaming samples with many more sounds, 24bit vs 16bit recording...).

Good Day!! Very informative topic you git here.. I have a Korg kronos2 88 and I am a newbie with this board.. I have a question how could save evrything inside the Kronos to a USB? I dont know to format it either from fat16 to fat 32? Horrible with my computer skills. Saw your videos and one of the best out there for beginners like me... Thanks man!!

I choose Fat 32. You can format your USB from the Kronos. Go to DISK - UTILITY, then from the dropdown menu, choose FORMAT. Your Kronos is backed up on the data discs that should have come with your unit. I use my USB to back up PCG files. If you do any programming, you will want to back up to USB, as well as Songs and samples. In UTILITY, you can select CREATE DIRECTORY to make a folder. To clarify my last question, I know what EXi (expanded instruments) & HD-1 (Hi-Def synthesis) means. I'm just a little confused about the way the Kronos banks are set up. How can you tell which is an EXi or HD-1 bank? I have the Kronos X BTW. I notice it comes preloaded with some sounds you can unlock/purchase (Austrian Piano, Strings, Drums, etc). Can you tell me just 1 user bank that is EXi? Are any off the AA, BB, CC, etc user banks for EXi? Thanks for your reply & for your help.

Thanks. I've been there & downloaded the 200k DX7 patches. After a bit of online searching, I found out the loading procedure on page 339 KRONOS_Param_Guide_E5.pdf. Basically it's just like loading any other patch. I am fairly new & as yet unacquainted w/the Kronos. 1 more question please? What do you mean "EXi (not HD-1)". What's that? After downloading some custom patches (from Kronos forums) I noticed that certain patches can't be saved to certain user banks. Is that because of EXi & HD-1?

Yes, Kronos can play all of these patches and most are on there. Examples: Waveburst is User F103. Full Organ Sliders is UserF08. Vectorian Bellscape is IntA61. A few are from some extra banks that Korg made, such as: Into the Night, Memory Lost & Alive and Breathing, which are available at the Korguser site, as part of the extra MOD-7 patches - MOD7Ext2 - C64, C71 & C72.

when i see the larger of the oasys 's display , i think that is the principal error in my kronos. i try the new kronos 2 and it's better than the first kronos. take the body of oasys to replace the " plastic " body of the kronos would be an excellent upgrade

+Mocuischalom Yeah, the OASYS is beautifully designed and easy to work with. I love my Kronos, but Korg should have at least implemented a tilt screen, like they did with the PA4X.

@scoopicman Yea its to bad they didn't put on the same large screen that could tilt. Its to bad they didn't just take the OASYS body and just improve on the inside hardware and leave the rest alone. You knpw some people don't know when to leave something along. Hey Volkswagen did for years and they sold millions.
