It is NOT a toy. To get the most out of the Pa5X one must treat it as having its own idiom. It is a professional's tool that will deliver the most for a musician that schooled as a virtuoso performer, arranger, and composer. I "play" keyboard and buttons as a homogeneous unit. To accomplish this efficiently I have created "notation" and "articulation" markings, in Finale, specifically for it. If one is simply going to play styles and pads with very little live performance activity, how boring and uninteresting. Amazing performances are possible when hands, feet, and bit switch are constantly creating. Example: Bach's 14th Invention played entirely live as an ensemble featuring vibes, horns, big band, and space all rolled together. It doesn't happen LIVE without an arrangement, taking the Px5X idiom into effect by constantly "playing" the keyboard and on deck buttons together as one. Styles used are changing as rapidly as the fingers can fly. Very fun! Very entertaining! Pa5X, the most capable e-machine I have ever tried to master. A Steinway. Imagination with very few limits. If you think of it as a clone of other instruments or a piecework playback of other people's hard work, how dull.

Really nice! If you were to believe what some people say you would think the PA5X is not a very good arranger. Truth be told its an amazing keyboard and Korg has made it very high spec! best arranger on the market by far and I have had the Genos. Keep up the great work Qui! thank you!!

Totally agree. Nothing, not even the Yamaha, can hold a candle to it. It is so well engineered and layout, and so capable from so many angles. Deeply talented and musically astute persons will discover all of its potential, which keeps on giving. For others, equipment with fewer bells and whistles might be a better fit. Having a thorough education in music theory, orchestration techniques, and how to pull out all the stops in a live performance is a plus with this baby. As for me, I never use it as a playback machine. Instead, I like to "play" live all of its playback and cloning capabilities idiomatically as just more notation on the manuscript. I have developed a markup method, similar to articulation markings, to help me play the many deck buttons just like the keys. Fingering technique is just as important to employ with the buttons as the keys. With that kind of virtuosity, the Pa5X can knock your socks off on the run!!

G'day Qui, I really appreciate all your tutorials for the PA5x, in this one you mention Bonusware Styles available for download on the Korg website. However I have been unable to locate them and would very much appreciate any links you could provide, and also if you could perhaps make a youtube tutorial on how to install them on the PA5x would also be very helpful. Keep up the great work.

But I’d like to know how the + operates when we reach song 12 in the list ? Will it go to the next page and start song 13 ? Many thanks for doing a tuto.

Hi Woody, love your channel, I watch your videos regularly! The yamaha registrations feature is great and very easy to use by anyone if you want to have predefined setups. Korg can do it too but in a different way and the system is way more open than on the genos, but that also means that it demands more of the player during the performance. Let me give a few examples: - setup mute elements in different variations on the yamaha you select the variations and mute the channels and then store it to a registration slot. on the korg you don't have to do this, just select the variation and set the 16 pads to matrix preset 4 and now you can mute elements in realtime (even solo them) with just pressing one or multiple of the matrix buttons. When you are used to this, it's absolutely fantastic during your performance because you have full control without having to predefine them, just go with the flow and it works - select different sounds. on the yamaha you have 4 OTS slots so to get predefined sets of sounds you can use the registration memory for that. on the korg this is different, there you have 4 keyboard sets and you have access to 11 favorite setups for your songs. So 4 specific keyboard sets and 11 favorites per song entry, which makes up a total of 15 * 4 sounds per song (60 sounds). If that is not enough you can change the 4 sets to different ones and store that as a separate song entry, in the setlists you can assign unlimited song entries, so let's say that you need 1000 sounds for a song (theoretical, want nobody does that), but the setlist entry allows you to do this in realtime without stopping the song and with Seamless Sound Transition (which the genos doesn't have). - select different pads on the yamaha you can store your 4 pads to a registration on the korg you can store 4 pads to a song (also the setlists entry feature as mentioned above makes this unlimited), but per song entry you can also have access to 48 extra pads to use through the matrix pads. (groups of 4* 4 * 3), so you have 12 extra pads for pad 1, 12 extra pads for pad 2, etc... - chord sequences on the yamaha you can add a chord sequence to registration on the korg you can add a chord sequence to a song entry and setlist entry (unlimited chord sequences this way per song) So basically I could explain this for every entry in the memory registration feature of the genos, but in general, most things can be accessed directly on the pa5x, where there is a setup needed (like on the registrations), then you create a songbook entry and add it to a setlist to change them at will. The yamaha genos registrations are much more easier to use because you set it up upfront, the pa5x can do a lot more, but requires more control and skill from the player to get the same level of changes as on the genos. So it more like a preference than something like missing features on both top of the line keyboards. I use both methods on my genos and pa5x and I like both methods. Hope this helps.

Hello Qui, thanks for this new interesting video about the Pa5X. Your tutorials are really great !! Could you perhaps make a video for people who want to move from Yamaha to Korg? I always asking myself if I can do the same things with Songbooks & Set Lists as I can do with registrations. For one song I normally make a registration containing up to 10 banks on my Genos. Per bank I can save the variation of the style, the sound etc. - you know. While I'm playing I use the banks, I get my preferred break or fill in, my other sounds, the new style variation and so on. How can I achieve this way of progression while playing a song with Korg? Another cool feature for me is the Freeze Button. I use it all the time too. For example I freeze style & tempo and so I can use all 10 banks to only change the sound. I can also load another registration with 10 more banks to only use these sounds. I'm not sure if this is possible with Korg. OK, the Pa5X offers 11 favorite keyboard sets. But with Freeze & Regs I have 8/10 sounds per registration. I like the sound of the Pa5X and the styles and would perhaps buy it. But nobody ever made a video that compares Korg vs. Yamaha concerning the way how I can use them interactively. Perhaps you can help ! Thanks a lot in advance.

the registration feature on the yamaha genos is absolutely amazing. Korg doesn't have this, so the things you are describing are not possible on a Korg keyboard. The style lock and tempo lock and sound locks can all be set on a korg while holding the shift button and then press the lock tempo button

Hallo Qui,thanks for the good explanation. Of you were to buy a keyboard richt now, wich one would-be you buy? The genos or the korg pa5x? What can the Korg do more and beter than the genos?
@quirobinez
@quirobinez Жыл бұрын
I have them both, i would buy the korg pa5x if i only would have to select one, but that doesn't mean the genos is not as good. The genos is also really good, but the korg has a more open structure, so it's more easy to create your own sounds and styles on it. Also the korg pa5x sounds more dynamic then the genos. So it's also a matter of sound preference.

that's a really good question. Most of the time you won't find a specific song on a keyboard. There are millions of songs out there and you only have around 700-800 styles, so probably that one specific song isn't on it. So if you want to play a specific song, then just find a style that has a drum and bassline that looks a little like what you want to achieve. Then play the song with that style and save it in the songbook with that name, so that you know that you like that style with that song. It's really fun to play existing songs with other type of styles. It's like creating your own interpretation of a song. Actually in the original recording of this tutorial (which was over 1 hour) I had to cut out my version of the song Just the two of us. I play that song with lot's of neo soul type of chords which makes it sound really different, but the video was to long, so i had to cut out a half hour of examples out of it. And that is where keyboard can make a difference. You have your own band at hand and you can play whatever you want. Just like I showed in this tutorial with the song Let it Go from the frozen movie., If I wanted to do a one on one version then I open Cubase and create the style myself. But most of the time I use the existing styles and do something creative. It's fun! To recognise existing songs is quite hard if you don't know the song, there are definitely a lot of styles that i have no idea on which song they are based on. But sometimes the style title gives it away, or you simply recognise the song intro. Then you can enter that song in the songbook if you ever want to play it. So for instance, start the intro 1 of style Rock/Wing Slow Rock and when you are a Stevie Ray Vaughan fan, you will instantly recognise the song Little Wing from him or Jimi Hendrix (which version you ever prefer), so that's the way to recognise songs on the styles. For the bonusware it's a little bit more difficult, these are rather modern song (but most of the time renditions of songs with over 1 million views on youtube). So here is a list i made in the past for a couple of the bonusware songs to get you started: Vol.23 Blues Brothers - Sweet Home Chicago Blues Brothers - Gimme Some Lovin Blues Brothers - Shake Your Tail Feather Aretha Franklin - Think Wilson Pickett - Mustang Sally B. @@j.b9610 no problem, the answer to recognise existing songs is in almost any case, the intro 1 of a style. Here's another example: Funk & blues/Fly Me Soul style , that one is Bruno Mars - Fly as Me (19 million views on youtube). just hit the intro1, play it, and then listen to this song on youtube. It's so recognisable. And your pa5x is full of those kind of styles.

How can I select songbook entry via MIDI commands without knowing what songbook entry number it is? Or how do I find out the songbook entry number, so I can send it as data LSB for entries 1-99? I see no number next to any songbook entry, so my MIDI control is not selecting a songbook entry. (The reason I need this is to change FX and EQ settings when loading a MIDI track in my DAW.)
@quirobinez
@quirobinez 2 ай бұрын
you have to assign a number yourself to the song in the top right corner of the songbook, for instance the number 1234, then you can select that song with the midi nrpn parameters: MSB=2 LSB=64, for the song itself use the dataentry midi parameter: for 1234 it's MSB: 12 and LSB: 34 So In general, the songbook selection is NRPN 2, 64, the song in the songbook is your own number in the dataentry MSB and LSB. This is also described in the manual, so check that chapter to get further information about this.
@basspig
@basspig 2 ай бұрын
@@quirobinez thank you for the tip on giving the entry a number. That said, I'm not having any results yet with sending from Cakewalk Sonar 7. They have entries for channel, kind (NRPN) Data and a blank heading where I can input more data. According to the manual, I have to have two NRPN events to put it into songbook read mode, and then the actual data sent as CC events. So I have a NRPN 99, 2, then NRPN 98, 64, then Control 6, 0 and Control 38, 1 (corresponding to songbook 1 entry. But the Pa5X ignores it.

Songbook is a good thing, but unfortunately it has its faults. For example, if you use Multipad or Matrix pad in a post, it will be saved, but you won't see what you saved to it. If you make several entries for a song, e.g. Intro, Verse, Chorus, etc. when scrolling the entries, the currently playing Multipad stops, you have to restart it. There is also a problem that the Pads saved in the entry do not start synchronously, so if you use different MultiPads in two entries, they do not start when switching and you do not even see which one you should start. These problems also existed in the previous series and, unfortunately, were not solved in the 5X either. This works perfectly in Genos, for example.
