I sold my MS20 for the XD. the XD is a more complete synth and works great with live with saving patches. but I do miss to awesome power of the MS20.

@@johnnykyr3403 Well, just because of the classic beauty of it. They do have differences, sonically. And I think the XD has a more colourful range of sounds than the MS20 mini. But an original or FS model is just fun to have, messing with the patch bay and connecting it to modular synths. I thought the mini would be the same, but owning it for a year, I found that it actually has an issue regarding background fuzz/noise that you can't eliminate without having OSC 1 off (apparently). I take back what I said sort of, the mini isn't much to miss about. If you're new to hardware synths, I'd see a bigger variety first before getting a Minilogue--although it's a great start. IT ALSO DEPENDS on what you're looking for. The MS20 is great for basslines and crazy/outlandish analog sounds

@@OhRaez thank you for the clarification, quite comprehensive! l still cant decide over which synth to start with, the XD looked like a decent all rounder to me, but still lm new to the synth world so l could be wrong. The reason that lm so keen on it is that my first synth experience was with a monologue and l fell in love with it, so the minilogue would be even better

I have an MS-20 Mini and I absolutely love it. I hear a lot of people describing it as an aggressive sounding synth (which it is) but its also capable of some beautiful softer tones. It's also fantastic for sound design and making weird Radiophonic Workshop style noises

The minilogue xd sounds as good as synths 3x its price tag in my opinion. My bandmate plays the shit out of it. I've never hear anybody else play it the way he plays it.

The XD does actually the classic MS20 sound! Check it out, there are comparisons here on youtube. On top its 4 poly. And has a 3rd Oscillator.

apparently the minilogue was built by korg using drawings of ms-20 circuitry. That's why the sound is very similar. In a mix it will be hard to differentiate the sound.

I use 2 Minilogue XD's, and thinking about an MS-20. Can the MS-20's CV outs control the XD's CV in (for modulation)? I know the MS-20 needs the English Tear module to control Eurorack, but I'm unsure if a conversion unit is needed to control the Minilogue XD with the MS-20. Has anyone successfully done this?

I'd get the ARP in a HEARTBEAT for its sound quality and simplicity. I'd get the Mini XD if I was actually a decent keys player lol And honestly, as awesome as the MS-20 can be, I'd only get that if I was ready for the semi-modular approach... which I may well NEVER be 😬 lol Know your limits 🤷🏼‍♂️😉 All three are SUPER cool, tho!

I don’t think so in this case. At least not completely. Being only 4 voices, the XD is not necessarily a pad machine. If it were those 2 vs the Prologue, I would agree more. Also the Odyssey is duophonic.

I am kinda all three types at once. I kinda fantasize about patching modules and being gay for old-school mechanical synths and then again thinking of myself as piano player and melody maker. I have MS-20 mini and I am satisfied with that but I am missing Minilogue XD, but not Odyssey. I imagine if I had bought Odyssey, then I would probably missing Minilogue XD also. So my point is if You have Odyssey or MS-20, you probably don't need the other. Minilogue XD gives you polyphony and that is whole different world.

Rodrigo Laporte the MS20 is my favorite monk synth of all time, but the XD is definitely the most versatile. And it’s gonna be your only synth, it would be the best by a mile.

There might be someone that is capable of playing the keys that could tell me ... What would be the first step on learning keys to go into the direction to somewhen be able to improvise like jack's doing .... The way he even just puts together a few notes so easily just impressed me ... #musicBeginner :-/

Find some basic music theory lessons that will show you some scales. the best ad-lib scale is the pentatonic(blues). Right now, you can play sad things(minor scale using 7 notes) on the white keys by starting on A and only play white keys and end on A, and happy things(major scale using 7 notes) starting on C and stay on the white keys and end back on C. You can also only play on the 5 black keys. those are some scale too. "amazing grace" can be played on the 5 black keys. but ya, get some basic music theory lessons. there are only 12 notes and they just repeat. some music theory will open the door to great things for you. best of luck and have fun

here is a 1/2 hr vid Andrew huang made on basic theory. I watched it a few days ago. he did a pretty good job kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJjEhX-oj6yfoZI. My personal belief is that music theory opens all the doors and I am still learning new aspects. once you know your theory, you can start on any note and the rules are always the same for which notes belong to that particular starting note, and which do not.

The original comment came off like you were new to everything, so I wasn't even going to mention chords. so you totally have the feel for chord progressions. just stay in the scale, tralala your melody within the notes of the chords, and resolve to the root...and ya, you will see, the theory will connect all the dots of what you already know. you got dis! have fun

It doesn't make sense to get the Odyssey or MS-20 anymore because of the Behringer clones. I have the Korg ones and they really cheaped out on the keyboards and the sound quality is only okay.

The xd has a mono mode so that rules out the ms 20, the xd can do a lot of what the arp odyssey can do. so for all around synth goodness ,i got the Minilogue xd!
