Narita Shinjuro Sensei is explaining the importance of moving without preparation or "yōi" [用意] in Japanese. This first part shows a soft form of movement, called "en-randori" [円乱取] or "round free movement" we recorded during his lesson in our dōjō in Munich. In part 2 you will find more background and explanation regarding this topic. The basic message is that moving spontaneously in the right way is necessary to create unity with the opponent. Trying to prepare yourself for the attack will end up in beeing a little bit too late all the time. The result is that your partner or opponent will be able to resist or avoid beeing dragged naturally into the movement. The movement of the body is of course important, but beeing able to move freely and spontaneously requires a certain mind-set.

no one knows how to sit in seiza, they are all dropped anyway with their hands on the floor, in Japan this would never be allowed.

Seiza can be very difficult for people who- A: Have physical issues with their knees, B: Never were required to sit in that position for a long amount of time. After decades of training in these arts Seiza has even become a difficult position for myself to maintain for a long amount of time. I require it for class "Opening" and class "Closing" but- I usually cut my students some slack when in the bulk of a class so they can at least walk...LOL Thanks for your understanding!

Please read the explanation of this video first. This is not a simulated fight but an exercise, called "en-randori".

How many nonsense falls like that could you handle 😆. Talk is cheap. When you hear yourself screaming in pain from a lock then you'll begin to understand.

Amazing. I was sceptical but when i look closely i see this is very powerful, all excecuted with 100% Aiki. People who think this is all fake blablabla. Well, its not. My experience is that the very soft looking aikido actually is the most powerful. And the aikido that looks the most powerful and "real" actually is the least effective and doesnt feel too powerful at all and can easily escape from. Great clip. what a sensei.

No not nonsense attacks. real attacks are not a Hollywood movie or an mma sportsfight. A real attack can begin with an angry person erratically coming at you, grabbing you or swinging his hands at you. We , in Aikido, dot punch or kick, but we slightly step out of the attack and unbalance the attacker. This is what Narita sensei PERFECTLY demonstrates.

Especially you as a woman, you are much more likely to be attacked by a male stranger by grabbing your hands and arms, perhaps to drag you somewhere to rape you or kidnap you. Its most uncommon that women are attacked by kickking and punching. So all in all no its nonsense attack. Please educate yourself.
