Korn came around about the same time as Tool and Deftones (which you forgot). I listen to a LOT of metal, and I feel like Korn, Tool and Deftones all kinda came out with their own thing at the same time. Korn and Deftones produced a genuine rage in their music that I had never heard before (but from different sources), and for the first time could really gravitate to as a person with rage issues myself. Tool on the other hand produced music (beginning with Aenema) that gave me a calming balance and understanding of life. To me all three are equally as important, and no other music has had as much of an effect as me. Just my opinion.
