The problem with killing Beth right after this whole arc is that it makes those 4+ episodes practically pointless when you're rewatching the show.

Definitely a shame the spent all that character development on Beth and Noah’s characters just to throw them both away. Death is definitely important to a show to make it feel like it has consequences but I really feel like both those characters could’ve been written off in ways that would make more sense for their development or develop them even more before getting rid of anyone spreading out the deaths a bit

I think Beth was wasted. She could’ve had an intriguing character arc in the Saviors arc. Imagine Beth in the lineup and vowing vengeance on Negan for killing her brother in law and the father of her unborn nephew. Especially since Maggie was pregnant and her most vulnerable! When I watched season 9 for the first time, I can't help but reimagine a version where Carl, Noah, and Beth become the main trio and Carl's most trusted allies.

I definitely think Beth's character was wasted, it felt like we got to see her growth just thrown away like a broken toy. With hindsight it would of worked so much better if she replaced Sasha when it came to her death. Sasha could of been the major death of the war, mirroring Abrahams. To see Beth's whole story come full circle would of been great, with her, her suicide would of been for a cause and a act of heroism instead of a cowardice and selfish act in season 2. It could of been so much better if she showed how strong she had gotten if she died to help set off a needed war.
@ryanelliott71698

But Sasha’s death was also bad. It achieved nothing. No really. Alexandria only fight back for a tiny bit before they’re captured again.
@thomascharlton7394
@thomascharlton7394 2 жыл бұрын
@@ryanelliott71698 true that death should of been restructured so that Negan wanted her to choose who died at his mini lineup but thematically it worked well as it was the driving force for them to go all out. So in my opinion the death was fine just didn't work structure wise. Hence why in Beth should of been there instead of Sasha.

Beth was a character with tremendous potential, at the time of when slabtown-coda aired i was convinced that beth was gonna be the next comic andrea because of how strong willed she's become and the fact that she's getting her own storyline with her own villain, not to mention the scars that she had on her face were the exact same ones that comic andrea had, also interestingly enough shes a gender bend swap of her comic counterpart billy greene in the comics. Its been stated that billy was an excellent sharpshooter and was only rivaled by andrea(which further proves why beth could've been the comic andrea the show was lacking) Coincidentally beth does have a striking resemblance to andrea in the comics as well, which gave me all the more reason to believe this but sadly it didn't come to fruition, of course she has to be killed off for shock value cuz why ever kill a character if it would actually further the plot or help develop more characters🙃 2 months later heyyy i just wanted to mention this because it seems like a lot of ppl must've forgot but beth was one of the most popular characters back in season 2-5 and in 2014 when them episodes aired and bruh lemme tell u when she died everyoneee was talking about it. The news was talking about it titled "popular character killed off Tv show" and they were talking about how so many fans were sending boxes and boxes of plastic spoons to scott gimples office and the fans making a literal fucking petition to bring her back. All because of a shitty death just for Shock value like countless others and wasting such a creative and unique character that stands out from the rest of the gang. So for the bitches that say that she had no impact try again😂😂😂😂

Excellent stuff. Thanks for the video, pure reminiscences. In my view the death of Beth served absolutely no purpose. Not even shock because this was given away in advance by AMC's own promotional material. Subsequently, I read somewhere that Emily Kinney asked to be written out of the show to concentrate on her singing career (!?). Rick had lost most of his humanity by this stage and adopted a ' kill first, ask questions later' approach. Who can blame him after what he had been through and what he had lost. Definitely Andrew Lincoln's best work supported by an excellent cast. How I miss those days!!

I never really realised how controversial Beth's death was. It was sad and tragic and shocking, which is what TWD had a reputation for, but it was a waste of character potential. This happens over and over again with the show, characters being killed off too early before theyre fully developed, have completed their arc, or before they have reached their full potential, to emotionally affect the characters and viewers, even though their deaths don't serve much purpose in the story beyond that. Every character deserved better, I mean they are living in an apocalypse, it's not sunshine and rainbows, but from more of a character perspective, Beth definitely deserved better and to live longer and to develop and grow into a stronger character, even if she wasn't the most popular character.

There's definitely a fine line between "they live in a bleak futile world and anyone can die" and they're just killing people off for shock value and because they dont know what to do with them anymore. @@bishbosh4815 now up to Beth/ Tyreese’s death’s, most main group survivor death’s had a purpose. Although I’m not say all deaths were needed. Cough Andrea, Axel, T-Dog cough. Where Dale dying convinced Rick to honour his wish to save Randall, which had the knock off effect of it being the last straw for Shane, causing him to quickly create his plan to kill Randall, Rick and take over the group. Or with Sophia where the journey to find her led to the the Greens being apart of the group for the long haul, caused further divide between Rick and Shane while developing other characters like Glenn, Dale, Carol, Daryl, Carl, etc… And the aftermath of Sophia’s death caused Hershel to believe he was a fool and kickstarting the whole Randall storyline. Where Beth and Tyreese’s deaths did neither of the examples I listed above. I guess you could say it caused Maggie and Sasha to bond over their lost loved ones, but they already reconciled in season 4B. You start seeing a pattern emerge with trying to copy what worked before without understanding why those deaths worked.

(I AM a scientist!) I definitely think Beth's character was wasted. The writers could have given her some of Sophia's storylines. That would've made some sense considering how Glenn and Maggie adopt Sophia in the comics, and Beth's relationship as the younger sister would be sort of similar. Then later she could have been by Maggie's side at Hilltop, and maybe had a relationship with Carl as they got older. Also I totally think Jesus would have loved Beth, they could have had a really nice brother-sister dynamic, especially after Beth and Maggie lost their brother Shawn 😢

Dawn should’ve been Rick’s former co worker. That way there is some connection to Rick’s past. Maybe even a Shane cameo in a flashback. All of the police officers know Rick, but they turn on him. The mid season finale should’ve had an epic hospital shootout that’s half crazy & half stealth due to the setting having many corridors. Beth can still die, but Rick is the one who kills Dawn & his former coworkers. It’s a metaphor for Rick leaving his old life and the show saying farewell to Atlanta. Basically Rick & Daryl vs Atlanta PD.

Hot take: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’d love it if part of the finale of the TV show is a reveal that Eugene lied… about lying. I imagine an event like Dr Ellis from World Beyond running into Eugene, and suddenly lighting up, having assumed he was dead for years, asking why Eugene never showed up at their meeting place. This would leave Eugene to explain that he decided to give up on being a scientist, “(…something, something… CRM-precursor bad) and I didn’t want to get Rick & Co killed.” Edit: maybe he’d even go as far as to say “I AM A SCIENTIST!”

31:20 - Beth’s death is actually what led me to start pulling away from the adaptation. There are quite a few disappointing deaths in the show that fail to service the story and its characters, but Beth’s death is at the top of the list for me, mainly for the reasons highlighted in this video.
@ryanelliott71698
@ryanelliott71698 2 жыл бұрын
Solid job at explaining why the Beth death didn’t work. But I’d like to go into more detail why it didn’t work. Beth’s death would never have worked as well as Sophia’s. Where in Sophia’s case we didn’t know she was alive, was a C/D list character, the journey to and the moment had ramifications and developed our characters. Beth dying didn’t do that. Any character development was around it. Not because of it. Second point is that it makes the entire storyline completely and I do mean COMPLETELY pointless! We went through all that effort to see Beth develop as a character just to die for no good narrative reason. Just to get replaced by Noah who essentially has a condensed “weak teenager being strong” storyline in 3/6 episodes following episode 8 just to die in the same season. At least with Sadiq he lasted 2 seasons past Carls death before he died. Noah didn’t even last half a season before he died. Third point is that I have a very strong theory and suspicion that Beth wasn’t supposed to die. Something feels off. As Beth’s actor stated in an interview that when she asked Gimple why her character was being killed off, he ignored the question and instead said he was planning her death since season 4. Which I just don’t buy in the same way I don’t buy Robert Kirkman being ok with Carl’s death. Then you have Noah’s actor state he was only hired for 3 episodes initially. Which would have put in or around the trade. Which makes me think he was either to die for Beth or willingly except the trade. Giving a bitter sweet end to the story. Fourth point is how the death feels it only exists to get Maggie and Sasha together, in which after episode 10 they they almost never talk to each others again. When we get into Sasha’s character in season 6-7 just keep a pin in what I said here cause it’s gonna be important as I just didn’t like what they did from a narrative perspective to her character in those 2 seasons. Fifth point is that Beth dying just ended up having us go through another Green member wanting to commit suicide. Which now just feels like a been there done that moment. Sixth it feels like some seasons, especially that one in episode 8 where Dawn stands up for Beth against the crooked cop feels out of place when Dawn goes straight back into being a b*tch during the trade. Last point is how it really did nothing to win over the Beth haters/ fans or really anyone. The haters understandably hate it cause it wasted 4 episodes of their time and her action that got herself killed didn’t do her character any justice and made her look stupid. The Beth fans hate it cause she got killed just as she got interesting. Cough Carl cough. And the people who were indifferent were somewhat ok since they got Noah… who dies 6 episodes later. So no way you slice and dice it, this death wasn’t just bad but was really the beginning of the shows decline. Where Glenn Mazarra was fired after Andrea’s death, no such action or repercussion was applied to Gimple after Beth and Tyreese’s deaths. It’s pretty disgusting that he’s still with AMC. After damaging the main show and gutting FTWD that that bastard still has a career. Which is bizarre what he became cause he did so well in season 4, but now he’s a joke of himself.

Another great video! The Walking Dead is one of my favourite TV shows so this series has been awesome to watch. I think the viewers started to leave because of two things, for one the season keeps getting darker and darker (although I personally feel that’s partly the intention as to show that being on ‘The Road’ is really bad for your mental state as well as just basic survival) and two the show has a pattern where all the really important and most entertaining bits were in the premier, mid-season final, mid-season premier and season finale so if you know the show has a lot of filler why watch 12 out of the 16 episodes? To do with Beth’s character I feel it was a waste of potential I know some fans disliked her as an irritating kid but I mean she was a kid really who just wanted to live (albeit not at the beginning) so I could see her frustration in that sense but I also hate it when they give a lot of screen time/development just to kill them off for ‘Shock Value’ it’s very lazy writing in my opinion and I say that as well because I really enjoyed the Grady Memorial arc (partly because we’re back in Atlanta or anywhere that isn’t the woods haha) and going back to my point about ‘The Road’ being bad for your health I think (and this is probably just me justifying the direction they took) the reason we get so many deaths in the first half of Season 5 is again to show how bad ‘The Road’ is so that when we do get to Alexandria it comes across as essential to survival to have a place you can relax. I had the same thought as you about Rick interacting with Dawns officers would of been an interesting moment but oh well just a show I guess thanks for reading, if you did take care!

On one hand, Beth had really become one of my favorite characters through her episodes with Daryl and Dawn and it sucks to see her killed off like that. But on the other hand, I think her death out of all the deaths in the show (maybe excluding Glenn) felt the most heartbreaking. She was so close to getting away, she was right back with the group, but all it took was one decision and she was gone. I felt like it might've gone over better if we got to see what happened to the hospital post-Dawn, because Beth's sacrifice was essentially there to remove Dawn from power and stop future survivors from suffering under her. But we never get to see what happens to the hospital after that so we'll never know if her sacrifice meant anything. It also felt really satisfying to see Dawn get what she deserves. Idk, I loved how absolutely devastating her death felt, but I do wish we could've seen more from her.

Tyreese’s storyline in season 5 was just hard to watch. Aside from saving Judith, virtually everything else was bad. His pacifism is by far the most cringe. Dale’s was understandable since it was early on and Randall I don’t think was evil. Just a stupid kid. Morgan was understandable since he was off his rocker in between seasons 1-5 so his extreme pacifist ideals can be seen as a coping mechanism. But Tyreese doesn’t have that excuse. That Termite threatened to murder a baby and was going to kill him, but Tyreese decides to spare him?! Why?!?! Then you got his stupid comment about how Sasha should forgive the cannibals who are Bob’s leg and his stupid plan that got Beth killed. By the end he was like an old dog that needs to be put down before they hurt anyone else. That’s how I saw Tyreese this season.

Beth's death was such a bad decision in my opinion
@SkaterBlades
@SkaterBlades Жыл бұрын
In retrospect i kind of like Beth and Tyreese being killed off before alexandria because they die so quickly when watching the episodes that you become more afraid the longer they stay out in the world because of the fast rate at which they die with 3 deaths within 6 episodes, 2 of which were bottle "meanwhile" types of episodes where their stories run in parallel to the events concerning most of the group. This makes the introduction of alexandria much more relieving as it feels like you can finally relax since the group has walls, food, water and homes. Now saying that, i don't like beths death. They killed her when she became a good character in a stupid way. She tried to kill dawn and either she fails and dies to dawn, which happened or gets shot by the cops. Her death would have been marginally less stupid if noah wasn't killed off, but even then the mechanics surrounding the trade didn't work as noah could have either just stayed at the hospital without beth intervening or left with the group and the cops likely wouldn't have shot. I also like to think about what role beth would play in maggies story, say maggie has a crisis of confidence helping deanna at alexandria and beth encouraging her or perhaps she could've taken a role at hilltop (just saying but Tara's role in season 9 would've been way more interesting and heartbreaking if beth took it, it would also mean jesus wouldn't be forced into a leadership role but this is all hindsight as the writers wouldn't know lauren cohen would temporarily leave 4 years later)

Beth and Tyrese character felt useless like why I’m not opposed to killing off characters Dale, Hershel, Lori, Lizzie & sister, Shane are all deaths I felt necessary for story but Beth and Tyrese death felt so unnecessary. Honestly I would let Tyrese and Beth make it but instead of Glenn it Tyrese and Abraham killed. Glenn lives but dies shorty during beginning of War Against Saviors protecting his friends. Beth would kept around until Whisper War and is killed along with Jesus when they are at graveyard. Noah death I’m mostly okay with because it led to drama and tension between Alexandria people and the group. Also scrap the whole Atlanta thing get them to Alexandria quicker.

beth was one of my favorite characters, probably because when i first started watching the show shes who i could relate to, a young girl that becomes hardened by the world around her, gathering the courage to stand up against the most powerful people in her life. I hated to see her go, to the point that her death was vaguely devastating to me. But I think that her death served to elevate what personally I think are the best episodes of the show, 10/10 episodes, tyresses death and the gang on the road. Her death lets us relate to the sense of hopelessness that the characters felt. they killed off what could be considered the heart of the show (outside of maybe carl and judith) in succession, both tyresse and beth. Tyresses death episode is beautiful and hopeless, it chokes you with the reality the character are facing. I think her death set the tone that would carry rick into saying "we are the walking dead", and I think if we hadn't gotten to that low, low point then alexandria wouldn't have felt as impactful, but after all that truama it makes sense that the group goes through what they do in the later seasons to make it their forever home.Honestly, I still would have rather seen beth survive as I think she would have been one on the best character on the show, the death of tyresse, eugene lying and noahs family is definitely enough (I mean if they would maybe have to keep around noah for that to matter but anyway), but I understand why they did it and in turn I think it created some of the best television ever.

But the death didn’t work. It satisfied no one really. The haters hated it cause they felt their time was wasted. The fans hated it cause she died just as she got interesting. And the in between people are mixed but some of those don’t like that they got Noah just for him to die 6 episodes later.

I gotta disagree Rick is far more ruthless in the comics from instances like Rick pulls out a Governor move in No Way Out when Jessie asks about the other families and children Rick says "The thing to keep in mind about other people's children... Are there not our children" Or Rick telling Lori to shut the fuck up, Rick actually planning to fight Negan right after Glenn's death, even the RV moment you mentioned is worse instead of just shooting him he chokes him out then leaves him for walkers when Martinez could have been telling truth about bringing good people back to the prison. Then when Rick returns he tells Lori he would kill everyone in the prison if he thinks it could help protect Lori and Carl, then he even says sometimes he finds himself ranking them over who's more useful to the group. This is all while the show Rick spent a minute running around a tree with Negan and the comic Rick who actually fought Negan and bit his arm over Carl. The comic Rick has shown remorse but people forget so has the show Rick at times like after he killed some Saviors with Morgan in S8 and playing Farmer at the prison.

Beth’s death was the death of the show. A character like Beth offers a sense of levity to the viewer because she was so different to the other characters who are, let’s be real, miserable, blood-thirsty morons by this point in the show. Killing off a character who did not fit into that mould pretty much signalled that these type of miserable characters are the only characters the show will permit to thrive and that is arguably too cynical to get behind and committing to further watching (the comic had dark moments but it never made me feel the kind of misery and apathy the show did). Since reading the comic I found that the show would’ve been entirely different and better if this plot line was omitted. Think about it. Imagine if they arrive in Alexandria BEFORE they find Beth, and Daryl, completely detached from the Alexandria way of life decides to leave and continues looking for her to make up for losing her while everyone else stays put believing Beth to be dead and wanting to put it behind them. Rick becoming unstable can be attributed to him partly and irrationally blaming the livelihood of the Alexandrians for forcing his brother Daryl away. And better yet, imagine after a near season of absence from the show, missing the No Way Out arc entirely and the beginnings of the Saviours, Daryl shows up out of the blue … but with half his face burned Dwight-style! Imagine if the show just gave Dwight’s plot line to Daryl and revealed that the people who kidnapped Beth were the saviours and that Daryl had tracked them down and infiltrated their ranks to rescue Beth, only for him to be foiled and for Negan to burn his face as punishment, with Beth being used as a hostage against him to make him continue working for them when war breaks out between them and the Alexandrians. Imagine how much emotion and conflict there could have been if Daryl had to pretend to Rick to no longer care for him just so he could keep Beth safe. And imagine how happy we’d feel when Ezekiel reveals that Daryl has been acting as a spy for him. And making Daryl a double agent would be far more interesting than any of the actual plot lines the show gave him after Beth’s death. And of course, knowing Dwight’s fate in the comic and transcribing it to Daryl could potentially have been one of the most emotional, shocking moments of the entire show.

i feel rick is much more brutal in the comic tbh, in the show the survivors stab the cannibals to death in church as they have to, the comic they go track them down and went on to one by one slowly murder them just to teach them a lesson? make themselves feel good? feels like rick esp is more generally more aggressive in the comic

Are you forgetting that Rick also went after the hunters in ep 3? The only reason it changed is because THEY came to the church for a better narrative. He was also planning to murder and/or mutilate them, it just didn't happen.

I really wish Beth had survived to see the saviors, I think it would've been a really strong choice to have her die in the war. Like from a writing perspective it would've really painted the saviors to be Awful to have them kill an objectively "good" character. (Glenn almost filled those shoes, but they did have him kill a man in his sleep like right before so that did tarnish him a bit. I imagine Beth wouldnt have been part of that raid though, so her dying just by group association would've Hurt.) Also losing Glenn AND Beth to the saviors would've given Maggie a LOT more fuel going forward. It seems so wasteful to kill her at the hospital, they didn't do anything longterm for the story. It was pretty much a filler plot and I wish she'd have made it out of there with Noah.

Honestly I liked the way beth’s death was handled It just added to the hopelessness of everything plus it’s just the perfect end to her arc this season When that bitch said “I knew you’d come back” Beth has made her decision, no matter what happens she’s gotta make sure Noah gets out of that god forsaken place It’s the determination that does it for me. She has to make one last effort against Dawn, she just has to. It’s all about proving that bitch wrong consequences be damned Do I wish it ended differently? Hell yeah I do. But I’m okay with the ending we got

What this series lacked was focus. It's not so much the endless journey, finding a site, destroying it, and continuing to travel to repeat the process. It is the lack of a point. Although the characters did maintain a clear characterization (Example Rick), it was not central enough to the story to be relevant. It was more of a background to the events that were happening. The plot series is simple and, as we already made clear, repetitive. Where the factor that changes is the way in which the characters face these circumstances, but even so, it lacks the style or intention of being a properly introspective series with its characterization. It is not a character driven series, when it was the only way they would have avoided that drop in audience. In his time, there were people who said that only GoT and The Walking Dead could kill their protagonists, but in reality, GoT only killed important characters (When the series was good) when the series needed it, to the point where it became ritual episode 9. After 9 episodes of justification as to why the character in episode 9 would die, they did. The Walking Dead only achieved this with Hershel, otherwise almost all of the major deaths were shock value without really thinking about what kind of story it was or what effect it would have. Therefore, in an ideal world. The Walking Dead should have already been designed with an "end" for its characters. Although the plot is endless, having an end for their characters would allow them to develop and explore them, to know how long it would take to reach these "ends" and thus, when to be able to "kill" them without seeming shock value, but the end of a journey, be this tragic, epic or dramatic. Imagine if the series had created arcs for characters, arcs real and clear. To show how they are the cause of their endings, and that this is not simply because they walked where they shouldn't.

I really don't understand what people wanted. One of the most common stupid complaints about the show is that in later seasons of the show is that it became less about just survival and fighting walkers, and then when they have an episode of exactly that in s5 ep10 Them, they call it the most boring episode ever! So what do they want?! Human drama and conflict of just surviving on the road?!

Abraham and Eugene has always fascinated me. Obviously when someone lies we tend to blame the deceiver but sometimes - just sometimes - a lie is so obvious the people who believe in it are instead 'buying in' to it because the lie itself does something for them. Like how it gave Abraham a point to live. Reminds me of some cults out there where even the deceiver is surprised he gained so many followers. Like, you think thousands of people genuinely believe an alien impregnated our planet etc.. or is it more likely they feel joining scientology will help their acting career? Do a ton of people genuinely believe Missouri is the garden of Eden and magical underpants? Or are there a lot of Mormons because of the social and economic stability the church provides it's members?

That's kind of the big question about TWD. It's a show set in a zombie apocalypse, and a recurring them is hope vs reality, life vs death, good vs bad, morality vs survival. The show was notorious for having a constant feeling of dread because "anyone could die", and I think this worked to the show's favour during early seasons when character deaths were meaningful, emotional, and made sense narratively and for the character because they had completed their arc and purpose in the story. However, as the show went on, characters started to die kind of just because the plot called for it and to get an emotional response out of characters and the audience, especially during mid season finale and finales, it became an obligatory expectation that someone would die. Even though the majority of these deaths arguably still play a role in the overall narrative of the stort, driving home the fact that this world is brutal, uncompromising and bleak, and that if you are hopeful or altruistic or the moral compass, you will be killed, it also meant that characters died before they were completely developed or reached their full potential, which made it hard to get attached to these characters when we knew they would probably die as soon as we really started to like them and were coming into their own. Some of the deaths needed to happen for a narrative reason like Abraham and Glenn, but others like Beth, Noah, Tyreese, side character Alexandrian's, Jesus, Enid, Tara, etc died because someone needed to die in that moment, not because it really made sense, and it's a real shame because those characters had so much potential that was wasted for the sake of an emotional moment that, while tragic and very well acted, meant that the show lost a little piece of itself every time, and there was one less reason to watch the show because it started to feel like you were only watching it to see people die. But maybe that's just what makes TWD realistic and unique? 🤔
