🔴Quick correction: 25:25 I said Levi is charging to get Eren, Erwin and Hange out, while he was only talking about Eren & Erwin. He asked about Hange earlier (and Erwin said he has no clue what's going on with their squad), but now he said they'd use whatever remains of Hange's squad as distractions while Erwin yoinks Eren. Think those 2 things jumbled in my brain. 😅

In Spanish, Connie's joke is just perfect. He says: "Si yo fuera Eren, podría decir que mi casa está que arde". It translates to "if I was Eren I could say that my house is on fire" but "mi casa" (my house) sounds the same as "Mikasa" and "está que arde" is also used to describe someone atractive. Basically, it sounds like "if I was Eren I could say Mikasa is hot".

I can’t explain how hopeless I felt for the "protagonists" watching this arc, yet when Hero ended I was stunned that it all worked. @sammanqueros86543 ай бұрын
An interpretation for Eren’s titan being smaller than the buildings: Someone said that the entire story was narrated by Mikasa and/or Armin. But, because it’s been so long since the events take place, they misremember details (like the color of Eren’s eyes occasionally changing). Maybe, with his size constantly changing, it’s reflecting the scale of Eren when compared to the Colossal Titan, and he changes sized based on their perspective. Just an interpretation, not a fully fledged idea, just something cool.
@iamthewizardwhoknocks28453 ай бұрын
Nah, it was probably a mistake.
@BigDBrian2 ай бұрын
Two things: You can use unreliable narration to justify literally anything in any show, so it's a copout answer, not an explanation. But also, no it wasn't necessarily a mistake. In that scene what matters is not Eren's size in relation to the buildings, but rather how he compares to the Colossal Titan. That's what's emphasised by making him small, though I do think they went too far to the point where it looks silly.

I'd say sub is still better tho. My main reason with the dub is the translation. Having it end with "RAGE" instead of "FIGHT" (TATAKAE) is such a symbolically and thematically bad decision. "Fight" has a symbolic value in this show from Eren's quote of "if u dont fight u cant win so fight, fight, fight", it represent constantly moving forward, which erwin's speech and charge were all about. Changing it into "rage" because it *fits better phonetically* is a horrible decision

I love the thematic exploration bit at the end. The juxtaposition of nihilism and anti-nihilism sits at the crux of AoT's overall extremely human and grounded message. "Give up on your dreams and die" followed by Erwin embodying that literally but also showcasing in his speech how we can rebel against the cruelty of the world. Only people who can acknowledge and cope with the reality of the world, thus being prepared to give up on their dreams and goals if life forces them to, and find beauty despite this are able to be truly free. Everything's going to be okay, because we are special for no other reason than the fact that we were born into the world. It saddens me to think sometimes how esoteric the show can be with stuff like this because this sort of message is unfortunately completely glossed over by majority of viewers, or even worse flattened into a doomerist nihilistic outlook that helps no one, specifically because the impact of the juxtaposition only works so well imo when you stress test the opposing view, i.e. emphasizing the shitty aspects of AoT's world and its characters, which often gives false impressions to readers and viewers.

the title "Perfect game" could also be a reference to the short story "The most dangerous game" and one ups it. In the short story people are the most dangerous game(game as in animal to hunt) due to their ability to use logic and reasoning, so one up-ing that to the perfect game would be the hunt of the beast titan, that is it's self a siege weapon. pretty much calling the beast titan the hardest thing to kill.

I always considered the “how little shrapnel hit Mikasa” thing made sense. Thinking about how the pressure exerted by expelling that steam pushed back the thunder spears rocketing towards him, it makes sense that a lot of the shrapnel would also be blown back away from Mikasa.
@ohthatswild17552 ай бұрын
I always thought that the thunder spears were someone similar to shaped explosives, albeit rudimentary, which would further help them with their purpose of being anti-armor. Such would mean that most of the explosive power is directed towards the tip, or where the spear is pointing, making the shrapnel towards the back end more survivable and less in quantity.

A subtle change in Erwin's speech in the dub has way more meaning in English than the transcription of the sub. In the dub Erwin says his soldiers push forward as opposed to rage in the sub. The push forward is a very American military ideology. If you look at an American soldier's uniform there is a flag on the right shoulder. However, if you look at it you will notice the blue plane with the stars are on the right side of the flag, and the flag is "backwards." That is very much intentional. The soldier's arm is the flag pole lofting the Stars and Stripes, and the soldier is advancing, pushing forwards so that the flag billows to the back of the soldier. That flag is being moved forwards as the soldier advances and it is shown by that flag patch forever in the billowing on the soldier's arm. That is why in the dub hits a little harder for English speakers. It is so subtle since it draws on an esoteric American military tradition that the vast majority of people whom never served in the American Armed Forces would over look.

"I'm making the choice. Give up on your dreams and die." This scene holds so much damn weight, dude. As you pointed out, Levi hid his face because he didnt want the visible shock on his face to be shown. Erwin didn't need to see that. He needed that stone cold face to give him the impossible order. The same impossible order Erwin has given his men time and time again and is was prepping to give for the last time. Erwins initial gasp followed by a smile means a lot too. I think he was seeing the irony of suddenly being the one that needed to be pushed over the ledge into the abyss of war, when hes been the one doing the pushing for so many years. I also think there was a level of pride in knowing that Levi was actively filling in the shoes Erwin was prepared to leave behind. Of the leader who would do whatever was required for the betterment of the mission. Thats why Erwin subtly refused the power of the Colossal Titan at Levi later on. That death - that monumental sacrifice he made along side the dozens of terrified soldiers accompanying him - was the purest ticket out of the hell that was war he could have ever had. To revoke that honorable retirement and place him back into the front of it all over again would have been a unique type of cruelty.

Can't wait for next episode. Mine and probably many other people's favourite one of the entire anime. Sure the is Levi slaying the beast and Erwin's sacrifice, Floch's miracle-like survival and Marlo's death, but my highlight in the episode is Armin's sacrifice, Eren taking down the colossal and Hanji returning to help Mikasa finish Reiner off, BUT the music is insane there!

Thank you for making these analysis videos. By making them you perform the same action that I write about down below. Sacrificing your time to spread the message of AoT and this speech. I argue that this speech is the greatest speech ever given, due to it's attempt to solve the human condition. The show comes to the same conclusion most world religions come to "life is suffering." Erwin argues that life is the most valuable commodity there is and that it's value is not decreased by the inherent suffering. He argues that these soldiers will not die to nihilism. They must sacrifice these few lives for the utilitarian purpose of saving the lives of the living. They sacrifice the most valuable commodity in order to save people they do not know, whose wellbeing these soldiers do not benefit from. And yet they do so. By definition, this is an act of unconditional love. Erwin (and for that matter Isayama) argues in favour of the existence of the highest virtue within this cycle of hatred and perpetual war. The message for the viewer is: - to be grateful to be alive - that by enduring the suffering of life one may find meaning in the perpetual incremental improvement of life for all of us. - That both nihilism and the human condition are incorrect. - That we ought to love the people around us unconditionally. I hope we can all suffer a little less.

I dont get upset watching stuff very often. I acknowledge stuff or feel sadness or joy or those "Thor showing up in Wakanda" moments that make you cheer. That being said I legit cried when Erwin died. Crazy. A totally fictional 2D rendering of a person touched me to the point where his death deeply hurt. Its nothing short of briliant.

I really love Erwin, probably because of his parallels with Ataturk, one of my favourite historical figures. If you know the life story of the man I'm talking about, you can easily make the resemblance, which is amazing. There is also a very famous speech of Ataturk, at the Battle of Gallipoli, which is very similar to Erwin's words. "I am not ordering you to attack, I am ordering you to die. In the time that will pass until we die, other forces and other commanders may take our place."

One of my favorite moments is when they cut to Floch's eyes for the last time and they are trembling. In that moment Floch understands it, he gets it, it is crystal clear to him while at the same time, he is in extreme fear. He sees that this is the only thing, that they can do, and he sees that he himself will follow through with it, that he will die (and yet he doesn't, I know...). It matched my own feelings so well when watching it for the first time.

Man, I have such a visceral memory of sitting on the couch, mainlining these episodes and sobbing my heart out. MY EMOTIONS!!! This, combined with Armin's sacrifice and that heartwrenching CHOICE they had to make, i was a wreck afterwards. This is just peak fiction IMHO.
