@SirEriol
@SirEriol Жыл бұрын
@@briannaaurora9307 Earth Kingdom has a faulty one, being the least espiritual of the Four Nations. They use some special rocks to divine the location of the newborn Avatar by cutting the kingdom in halves. Wherever the rocks point, that's the general location of the Avatar, the oposite direction is disregarded. The process is repeated as many times necessary until the Avatar is found. However, as happened with Kyoshi, this works like crap if the Avatar parents change location and take the baby with them. That's why Kyoshi was not identified and that kickstarts the plot of her books. Also, it's fun to nothat even if it is a fan project, Legend of Genji also had a case of a misidentified Avatar, so this is the general vibe that the Earth Kingdom exudes, being picked up by fans before it became a canon plot point.

Credit where credit is due, Korra has some interesting ideas how to expand the world and themes of Avatar. And Zaheer is an awesome villain on par of Ozai. Execution is kind of hit-n-miss though.
@coolnerdstuff
@coolnerdstuff 3 жыл бұрын
I'm mixed overall about Ozai. He does get good characterization before his first appearance through how he's treated Zuko and Azula, and his presence and delivery in the finale absolutely pays off how much he's been built up over the three seasons. However, he's a very passive villain for the entire series, and his only character trait is "Megalomaniac". It's fine for the more black and white morality of ATLA to have a villain like that, and they executed it well, but the lack of depth limits how high tier a villain they can be in my book. Zaheer, by contrast, is a very active villain with understandable goals and motivations beyond "does bad things because he's the bad guy". He's taken inspiration from old Airbender teachings, and while he's certainly not following the original intent of those lessons, he's viewing it through the lens of the catastrophies that were the 100 Years War and the Air Nomad Genocide. He has chemistry with the rest of his Red Lotus team, and has growth as a character and his philosophies as the series progresses! Both Ozai and Zaheer were executed fantastically, but with how much more complex Zaheer was and how much harder it would be to deliver, I've gotta put him at a higher level.
@Birthday888
@Birthday888 3 жыл бұрын
@@coolnerdstuff The one thing that I dislike about Zaheer is that his plan had absolutely no long term goal aside from killing the Avatar. Like, the mere existence of Kuvira shows that Zaheer's plan of simply ridding the world of corrupt leadership isn't sustainable in the slightest. The Red Lotus would end up being another pseudo-avatar by killing any individual or organizations attempting to conquer and oppress. Which is part of the weakness of all of Korra's villains. Because they're all extremists in one form or another, very little is actually done to create or even present solutions to the problems they present, and yet, most of them don't have enough characterization for the audience to understand how they got to that extreme. So yeah. Great ideas, but execution leaves something to be desired. Also wish Korra's gang of friends had been more fleshed out. Bolin's lack of direction in his life could have fit perfectly with Korra's struggle to understand what her role as Avatar means in the current age. It could have also set up conflict between him and Mako, since Mako is much more put together by comparison, especially after he joins the police. Also, personally, I see Ozai as the personification of the Fire Nation's imperialism, colonialism and war-mongering nature. He's a product of his environment like all of the Fire-Lords before him ever since Sozin began the war. So I think he fulfills his purpose perfectly. Besides, we have Azula and Zuko for antagonists that have more emotional depth, and the narrative frames them just as important as Ozai himself.
@Spherrum
@Spherrum 3 жыл бұрын
@@Birthday888 Zaheer being a hypocrite and wanting to become an authority over wannabe authorities was the point. Ozai may be an embodiment of the FN, but he is still a flat and bland villain for evil's sake. And Azula doesn't have any emotional depth until the finale, where she starts to melt.
@silvereyes242

Ozai was a lame villain, a two dimensional piece of cardboard. Don’t get me wrong he was threatening and served his function, but he’s rarely a point of discussion when people mention the original series since he’s well, kinda boring. Azula was the only true villain who actually had depth.

I watched this show as it came out, and while I enjoyed it more than a lot of people the fact that seasons could take such a long break between each other made the show feel slow. I recently rewatched both AtLA and Korra with two friends because one of them hadn't seen either. I walked away with a new appreciation for Korra, having all the show already out and being able to watch multiple episodes back to back really did the show favors. While I like the original show more still, I wholeheartedly disagree with people who think Korra isn't a good sequel

I think, for me personally, it's how the show has so much that it wants to do but almost never manages to weave them all together into a satisfying narrative. So many plot points get dropped in season 1 and 2 or simply don't mean anything and turn out to be wasted time. Power creep becomes a huge problem by the end of the show, with a huge mecha the size of skyscrapers shooting atom bombs out of an arm cannon at the main cast. It has moments of greatness that sometimes surpass Avatar but the whole is less than the sum of its parts in my opinion.
@silvereyes242
@silvereyes242 3 жыл бұрын
A lot of people hate it because of the awful critique videos by Lily Orchard and ER, they kind of just assume the show is “garbage” because their videos are popular without actually thinking whether or not their issues with the show are even logical. So many of their points are lies, misinterpretations, highly subjective, jokes that don’t even make a relevant point or unnecessary nitpicks. The legend of Korra is better than most children’s shows and anime’s I’ve ever seen, it’s such a shame most people are sheep and shit all over it for no good reason.
@TheMhalpern
@TheMhalpern 3 жыл бұрын
@@brycebitetti1402 like power creep wasn't an issue in Airbender? you have Zuko, then Zhao, Zhao's fleet, Azula, the Drill, the Dia Lee, Azula infiltrating the Dia Lee, Combustion Man, and lets not forget, Comet boosted fire benders.
@brycebitetti1402
@brycebitetti1402 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheMhalpern That isn't power creep so much as an escalation of conflict. The difference is that ATLA establishes most of these elements incredibly early on, and/or places a limiter on them. Yes lightningbending exists but it can only be done by incredibly skilled benders. The same thing goes for bloodbending and metalbending. In Korra, these skills are handed to people like their candy. An entire city of people can be metalbenders. A B-grade bender like Mako can lightningbend, as well as a bunch of other randos at a power plant. This forces the villains to become more and more powerful until you get a giant mecha with a giant spirit cannon. Season 3 skirts around this issue by making the villains a group of exceptionally rare benders, but season 2 and 4 are the worst at it. This is mostly due to the show using the spirit world as a plot device, retconning the original from ATLA into a much less interesting place.

I definitely agree with your first example of awkward writing ("she's strong" "she lacks restraint") and the one where he mentions about how Korra mastered the physical side but not the spiritual side as awkward and unnatural. However, I have to disagree about the time Katara said how Tenzin was quiet. She was answering a genuine question from Pema wondering how rambunctious Katara's own children were as kids, and for Tenzin she said essentially that he was similar then as now. It seemed natural to me.

When you said Korea was better than last Airbender I could hear the outcry and pitch fork grabbing but than you added at certain times and heard the " Hold! Let's hear them out" and a light lowering of pitchforks. I kind of agree and disagree with you saying about comparing Korra to last Airbender. Ya its good to see the differences between Korra and Anng. And it's a continuation in the same world but it's Korra's story not Anng's so has to live or die on its own merits as a story, but as world building and lore, you do need to remember its a continuation from last Airbender. It's abit like star trek TOS and TNG. Hope that makes sense. Could not say I like Korra over Last Airbender but will say I've rewatched Korra more times than last Airbender for what it's worth. There was a little voice in my head in the voice of the radio/ recap anouncer saying at the end of the video " who dose Critter think is the 2nd worst character!? Stay tuned to find out!"

I LOVED this video! The world needs more positivity about this show. I adore Korra, both the show and the character. She's actually my favourite character in her show, she's a flawed, compelling character from the start, but grows and changes so wonderfully as the show goes on. Her struggles feel very personal; where Aang's journey was this big obvious problem that needs solving in a pretty clear cut way, Korra spends a lot of her time just figuring out what her role in these struggles even is, she doesn't have the same huge messianic role in society that Aang did. Aang's character journey was about having an unbendable spirit; though he did have character growth, it was more subtle. He didn't need to change who he was or his worldview to succeed. But Korra's character journey is one of growth and change, constantly learning truths about the world that shape her as a person into becoming a better Avatar. Learning from mentors like Tenzin, her own failures, and even from the villains. Anyway, sorry to drop such huge paragraphs into your comments, but I'm very excited for the rest of these videos. Keep up da good work!

Heya! So, I found your channel via your RWBY content, and now that I've found your Korra reviews, I just want to say Thank You for publishing so much content that is so thoughtful and precise. You never bash anything for the sake of bashing it, you give credit where its due, even if it isn't popular, you're clear that your opinions are your own, and you look at certain things through lenses that I have often never thought to look through. So kudos to you for all of that! One thing about Legend of Korra VS Last Airbender that I'm curious as to your opinion on... Korra is a sequel series, Korra is her own character, and yet it does have to continue the legacy of what came before. Something that always bothered me is that in the opening of every episode, we see Korra literally standing in Aang's shadow. It may just be a statue of Aang, but the symbolism there is so strong, and I always felt it sent the wrong message. Korra is Aang's successsor, not just a lesser Avatar to be compared against him. Just as Aang was part of an acient legacy of Avatars, so is Korra. Just my opinion, anyway. Thank you again, and you now have a new subscriber to your youtube channel! ^_^

Like being the avatar and trying to deal with people without bending and trying to understand them. Like that asked the question on if the avatar was needed for this problem. It did the same with several other arcs in the show as well.

I think my two major gripes with Korra are the dumb love triangle that goes throughout the series,and the villians. Korra fucks over her friends for Mako,and then when she gets him she kinda treats him like crap,its hard to cheer for her when she's doing all of this stuff to people she calls her friends. And the villians are fine,but some of them needed more than one season to develop with how fast they come and go,especially the red lotus group. Korra is fine to me but those two things kinda make me not like it as much as i want to

Mmh. I _respectfully_ disagree that Korra is better than TLA,I enjoyed TLA more and Korra took a while to get _me_ into it. HOWEVER to me is more like each series successes and have flaws in different places. Now,I think a lot of people forget Korra was meant to be a mini series,a single season centering around the next Avatar after Aang,but then Nickelodeon wanted it to keep going. So while TLA was an overarching story,Korra is a story in which each season is its own story while remembering stuff from last time. And I believe people miss the point. Korra _isn't_ Aang,she's not supposed to be,and she'll never be him,just like Aang wasn't Roku or Kyoshi,Aang was just that... Aang. I have my gripes with this show,I hate many aspects of it,there's things I believe could be improved or rewritten or even get straight up removed without an issue. But I there's also stuff genuinely enjoyed! I don't hate this show,and honestly? I'm happy you took the job to bring more attention to the positives it has! I’m excited to see you doing these types of reviews with other shows! I cant say I agree with it being better then ATLA though but I think that’s ok! Tbh, Korra herself is what scared me off from the show but I’m really happy that you can gets some enjoyment out of it! There’s a KZbinr called Dr.Wigs who has an AMAZING review of the first season that I can’t recommend enough, her reviews perfectly explain why I couldn’t get into Korra. I feel like if I tried to explain I’d be repeating what she says! Anyway amazing video!

One thing the soundtrack of avatar does it really well is telling us information of the surroundings of the universe they live in, in Katanas village the music was very barcore, and in the fire nation it was more Chinese, in the swamps it was more organic and treating. While in Korra when she was in the fast pole it was epic and grandiose to tell us how much space and nothingness there was there, while in Republic City it was more jazzy and chaotic. It’s a awesome really.

I've always been one to jump on the hate train when it comes to Korra (despite never actually watching most of the series) but the more I think about it and the more I see of it, the more I come to realize how great a sequel it is. You don't have to drag down Korra to love ATLA and vice versa. They can both be great in their own right. (My change of heart also mostly came from seeing how terrible Boruto is as a sequel to Naruto and appreciating how Korra was able to excel in so many ways Boruto failed.) I'm definitely gonna rewatch Korra.

Super excited for these reviews :) I did actually enjoy LOK. The series, most of the combat, most characters, all the villains. I love Korra continuing the trend of next avatar being the opposite of the previous. I only had two issues. Korra's character type and the odd praising of Korra up to the Zaheer finale. I am not a fan of "I'm a jerk because I'm strong" character type. Which Korra does grow out of but I personally don't like characters like that. The odd praising Korra gets in the first two seasons and like half of the third, could be seen as Mary Sue moments, but I won't call them that due to how Korra grows after season 2. There were far too many moments where Korra makes a bad call, only one person calls it out, but everyone praises her for that bad call at the resolution. Korra faces no actually consequences or fall out until after season 2. But it was still a great journey to watch Korra go through. There's definitely some things I didn't agree with in the journey but I chalked it up to oversight/lack of foresight due to the production issues behind the scenes. All in all still a great watch.

I always thought that the reason Korra was raised in that controlled environment was specifically because of what happened to Aang. He ran away and a 100 year war went on while he was away. And once he was awake, he struggled to looking all over the world for bending masters to teach him. Keeping Korra in one place made her naive about the world but allowed her to learn the elements and master them in a way Aang couldn’t. Also, they were able to know the Avatar was safe and where she was in case they needed her.

*sees a fellow Legend of Korra lover* WOHOOOOO *does the Tenzin scene* Now I wanna point out my Favorite Avatar is Kyoshi and I dont care who says and what she is cool and I love Kyoshi and I would as a nonbender be ready to fight an Agni kai with anyone to defend her honor (which she can do quite well on her own so it is what it is her books are great and I want them in an actual show Format) but Korra is close 2nd I like how Korra from the get go shows that she is not miss perfect princess they would expect her to be she is honest and true to herself and she does make mistakes like everyone does also she is a fun character who has a hard time living up to Aangs legacy but then she carves out her owm path also eventho she comes off strong and immovable we do see that she also has a fragile side later dowm the show to the point where we even spend 1 season with her trying to figure out whom is she and what does she want in life (if these words are familliar to the reader of the comment GOOD) So she is a cool character with cool Design ( I have a thing for buff ladies ;) ) and an underrated story that I actually really liked to the point that I rewatched it more then the OG series...... but I still like Kyoshi more her character nouances her vulnurability but still the willpower to do what she thinks right the fact that she is a cleanfreak and has freckles on her nose (cuuuuteeee) also she is tall *Aaah Tall Lady! looks in awe Steven Universe style* and you think her separating her Island was the GREATEST FEAT OF HERS HA! Ill let you know she wrestled an elephant Koi fish aaaand rejuvinated her life energy through her avatar state and lived for 270 Years! she is cool. anyway back to LoK ALSO am I the only one or Does Republic City feels lowkey like Gotham City? with the crime and brewing "revolution" that the protag has to stop from becoming an outright war? is it just me? idk I must have played too much Arkham City while watching the show then again I also used to play Dishonored but Im sure thats fine its not like there was a guy with armored coat with a Weird mask and *looks at Amon* HOLY SHIT A GUY WITH ARMORED COAT AND A WEIRD MASK Side talk cause this comment is already waaaaay too fucking long. Tenzin awesome character during the whole show with flaws but great scenes 2nd season finale being THE character scene for him to me also Sibling fun bits nice. Also I actually liked Lin much more then Pema even in season 1 she has great scenes like the one at her last stand saving Tenzins family possibly reminiscing of that that could have been their family grwat stuff. Korras family is great and they only get better next season. Naga is a good girl but I still preffer big cats like Nightsabers in WoW or the Khajit mounts in Elder Scrolls but thats personal prefference. Aaaaaand final Note I didnt see the other videos Yet but I'll guess who is number 2 worst character for you might be and if Im wrong it is what it is but to me he is Also actually the number 2 worst character in the whole show only Unalaq beating him (soooo poorly written antagonist) and thats Mako you know the douchecanu who screwed over Asami then Korra then Asami again also he got some terrible fucking lines in Season 2 first half like irredeemably terrible lines so I enjoy seeing him squirm in season 3 around Korra and Asami....... he is not necessarily the worst character or worst fella but not once did he came off as kind of a jerk..... in season 4 tho he did have some good moments sooo....... meh I still dont like Mako..... and I dont have to others may like him thats fine I just dont like Mako we agree on everyone having a differwnt opinion and thats fine. Anyway love your vid Judgemental cant wait to see the other vids where you may point out things I missed (like Korras fine movements with her hands I actually missed that huh.... love the details tho)

My god i love this review. It gives love to things that deserve it. And pulls no punches to where it shouldn't. I'm going to follow this review series with great interest. It's very interesting to see how differently you feel about all the characters. Especially the Top # worst characters list. I'm going to guess #2 has to be someone from team avatar and i see all 3 as very good contenders. Asami is just not written all that much in s1. Mako is literally there just to be a love interest. Bolin is clingy weirdo. Also the way you talk about korra - I don't think you love korra, I think you're in love with korra. 26:28 that's been my desktop for months and months and months, I can never find something that can replace it

I’m surprised you didn’t go into Korra’s fire bending exam too much. They characterize by having her run head first into the fire. It foreshadows her abrasive actions wanting to deal with the threats head on. While this same method gets her into trouble, where a later episode has her ambushed by Amon in a later episode after publicly challenging him.

I don't hate Korra like a lot of other people do. I don't think it's as great as AtLA, but still enjoyable on its own (for the most part). If you ask me, I liked the idea of Korra being the polar opposite of Aang; while he's calm, polite, humble, tries to make friends with everyone, and tries to avoid conflict of any kind, Korra is loud, brash, I wouldn't say "rude" but she's not exactly the most respectful person, and won't hesitate to bust some heads. Same goes with her knowing every element except Air out of the gate, unlike Aang who started out only knowing Air. Of course, this is all referring to the start of the series, before Korra got her development and before more level-headed and mature. But, in my opinion, the show kinda started going downhill after Book 1. I think the ending for Book 1 could have been a perfect ending.

I'm not a fan of Korra. I used to like it but a lot of it hasn't aged well for me, mainly because while there are some things i think shouldn't have been added (lookin at you Book 2), there are some things in book 1I think could have been executed better. An example of the latter for me is Baby Korra. I dont like how Korra is already bending 3 elements at a younger age than either Aang or Roku (whose training was also shown in TLAB) who had only just mastered one by the time they found out they were Avatars. It raises the question: how many earth and fire benders would Korra have interacted with at that age that, after learning she was the Avatar, she proves she can do their bending styles so easily at such young age? Aang managed to get some of the basics of water and fire bending pretty quickly, but someone still had to show him how to even do them in the first place. HOWEVER I agree with not wanting the first book to just be about her learning the elements; We already got two of those in Aangs story so we don't need to focus so hard on it here. That being said, I feel there is a much better compromise that works out both situations. Just give Korra a short montage of her learning the elements, showing her growth with water and earth, and have THAT segway into her fire bending training. Not only would it satisfy both sides, but it would also work out a few things you mentioned in the video: 1) it would show off her gung ho attitude, 2) it would allow them to show Korra not understanding the spiritual side of bending as we get to SEE more of her growth as she trains, and 3) we get to see more bending from her, while also getting to see the mistakes and struggles she might have gone through, leading to the fire bending test and the fight with the Triple Threat thugs where we can see the fruits of her labor as she gets to wreck shop at full force. All that being said, I'm glad you're doing this. While I dont like Korra, I feel there's a lot to learn from its existence as well as discussion that can be had about it's good and bad moments, and seeing the perspective of someone who greatly enjoys the show helps with that. I look forward to seeing more in the future. Also, Naga deserved more screen time in this show than she got, but that's just me

Korra mastered 0 by the time she found out she was the Avatar. The only difference is that Korra discovered she could bend more then one element earlier than either Aang or Roku. But she was not a master at any of them (we only see her finally master fire when she's older and passes the test.)
@natsuquilava7917
@natsuquilava7917 3 жыл бұрын
@@CJDM310 I never said she had? I mentioned Korra was able to bend 3 elements, rather well for her age I might add, but I only said that Aang and Roku had mastered one, hence me asking how much fire and earth bending she was able to see in order to do them, since I doubt there would be that many earth or fire benders at the pole for her to watch and imitate, especially prior to being found by the white lotus. Perhaps that was bad wording on my part
