When you go to a museum and you see those engraved wheel lock pistols owned by kings, or jeweled greatswords owned by noblemen, or custom revolvers owned by presidents of centuries past, this is a modern version of that tradition. It functions as a standard pistol with a quality not meant for average people, and in a hundred years, people will look at one of these and wonder what kind of person owned one.
@gesamtszenario4 жыл бұрын
Actually, no. Korth sells their current lineup of PRS pistols for around €5000. This is expensive, yes. But is achievable for most members of the middle class, if they are willing to give up other luxuries, or take on debt. What made those historical examples function as status symbols, is that no one who wasn't of exalted rank could have them. A Korth pistol can be bought from the factory, by anyone who is willing and able to spend the price of a modest used car.
@theduke75394 жыл бұрын
@@gesamtszenario as someone who works in a gun store, and is going to school for gunsmithing. Yes, most middle class COULD save up to buy a Korth pistol, it would take several years for most to save up that kind of cash, but it is doable. The upper middle class could do so in a couple months. However, most individuals would rather have 5,000 dollars worth of multiple guns, not 5,000 tied up in a single gun. The only people who spend 5,000 dollars on a single firearm are of significant financial status. Especially considering anyone who owns one, likely own many firearms.
@ramjb4 жыл бұрын
Actually no, because guns like the ones you described for monarchs and presidents, etc, of the past, still do exist nowadays. Just take a look at the handguns people like Saddam, Gadaffi (and a long list of other absolute leaders, monarchs or dictators, elsewhere in the world) had/have. Some damascened, others actually plated in gold, all of them with insane ammount of decorations, hand made engravings ,etc. Those are the guns people of the future will look back at the same way we look at, dunno, a Lous XV hunting rifle today. Something truly out of reach of anyone but the top class wealthiest of the wealthy (which in most cases means the most powerful of the powerful aswell). This is nothing like that. At all. It's costly, but is well within the realm of the affordable for a pretty large part of the population. Which, even if they won't buy one because why bother for the cost, still could theoretically afford one with comparative ease... Now try to compare that with one of Saddam's gold AK-47 or Hitler's gold and ivory PP (just to name a couple of instances). They're not even in the same league. Literally light years apart. So, once again, this is nothing like that.

To be curt and pissy, you’re wrong; your comparison is like comparing a cheap shovel to a ceremonial shovel for groundbreaking ceremonies. For this gun, it’s more akin to a cheap stamped metal knife vs a Damascus steel knife. Both are functional, one will last longer with use. Put any amount of rounds through those historical ceremonial weapons (EDIT: I mean the firearms, though you can compare blade wear on the others)and watch the damascene wear off. Put 10x the amount through the Korth and it will not have such wear or degradation.

Frankly I do not understand the haters. If you were at an auction for, say, a Stradivari or classic European or Japanese swords, would anybody object at the sum paid to posses those masterpieces? No: you can have perfect sound on violins made of kevlar or fiberglass, you can have perfectly machined blades, what you cannot have is the 100 or 1000 of hours of work by craftsmen that would produce those objects. So is for the Korth's. I do not have the money for those products, but I would be enchanted to be able to see them at expositions and museums. It is just collector grade art.
@jic16 жыл бұрын
The problem with you analogy is that these are the "violins made of kevlar or fiberglass": they are all about technology, engineering, craftsmanship, and quality control, but are still a standardized production item. If you go to Korth with the money they will give you a gun identical to this one, and will continue to do so until you run out of money or they discontinue the model, whichever comes first. The Stradivari violins, on the other hand are all unique, were all handmade by a specific craftsman, will never be made again, and have over 250 years of history attached to them.
@scipio100006 жыл бұрын
You raise a fair point. That said, I looked quickly up on Stradivari's page on Wikipedia. it turns out that he produced about 244 violins (non counting another 400ish string instruments) over a 20 years period, that is, about a violin a month. Further, the reason they were so appreciated was their sound quality, which was more or less even. You need to consider that in fact the violin construction relies on standardized rigs. As for the metal, fibers, glue, wood material used for the construction one cannot assume the same consistency that Korth machinists can assume about their metal components, but, that said, craftmen working with such old materials were always very careful to source their material with the best desirable characteristics. All summed up, I would consider Stradivari's production more akin to a batch production run instead of, say, a unique piece like you may have for jewelry, statues, or painting. Also consider Korth run for this gun - or its revolvers - does not exactly runs in the tens of hundred of thousands. In fact, I would bet a slice of my sorry ass that this particular model might have had just a run of few hundreds at most. Hence my comparison, in my estimation, is also kind of fair.

This is an old video, but since I have a lot of fresh experience with the Korth pistol, I think it's okay to share the story and my fascination. So, in my country, Croatia, only public figures (politicians, judges, celebrities) and entrepreneurs whose wealth exceeds the legally prescribed threshold of 4 million euros can get a license to carry firearms for everyday self-defense purposes. Because the state considers that only these people are at risk because someone could be jealous of them enough to try to harm them. The director of the pharmaceutical company where I am the purchasing manager recently crossed that threshold and decided to buy a Korth 1911. As part of a team building, he decided to take us managers to the shooting range where he showed us his new Korth. Most of my colleagues were horrified because that gun costs more than our six months' salary, but I, on the other hand, remained in love with the indescribable quality and the very feel of that Korth. I am infatuated and mesmerized by him to the point where I have watched every video, read every blog I could find on the internet. bought an airsoft replica and made it one of your life goals to one day own such a piece of mechanical art.

I got the chance to shoot a longer barrel variant of this model a few years ago. These things were clearly made as a flex by the engineers and machinists. The trigger is just amazing, the recoil is noticeably softer and "longer" than on a standard 1911. Once you disasseble them, though, then you kind of feel bad for having shot them to begin with. My first thought when I got to see and feel the tolerances was "they didn't have to go THAT hard on the tightness of the fit...", followed by "... I suspect that was exactly the point of it.". Too bad I can't afford one :-(

As someone who had a career in manufacturing the Korth looks like a gun made like fine machine tools are made. And not only that, nearly every part of this gun has been expertly crafted and customized.” - Snake

+Wouter Sikkema It’s the size of a normal service pistol, the frame is based on the 1911 after all. Even by modern service pistol standards that’s *big*. Not to mention that it isn’t really up to date in many regards anymore, the magazine (as a 1911 clone) is only single stack, meaning you get 8 .45 ACP or 9 9mm Parabellum rounds. For a pistol that size, that’s simply not acceptable today for a service pistol.

The color you see on the inside of the barrel is the oldest form of Black Smith skill there is and was used for Swords in the past. They used what they call “Tempering standards" and those are still used by blacksmiths today for comparison, ensuring that their work is tempered to the proper color. When the steel of the gun has been freshly ground, sanded and polished, it will form an oxide layer on its surface when heated. As the temperature of the steel is increased, the thickness of the iron oxide will also increase. Although iron oxide is not normally transparent, such thin layers do allow light to pass through, reflecting off both the upper and lower surfaces of the layer. This causes a phenomenon called “thin-film interference”, which produces colors on the surface. The green/turquoise color you see in the reflection is exactly 650 degrees Fahrenheit or 363 degrees Celsius of heating for one hour. Those old blacksmiths in the past could only measure the heat by seeing the change of the colors of the steal in the process. And each of the rainbow’s colors appear at very precise temperatures, and so provide the blacksmith with a very accurate gauge for measuring the temperature. Different parts of a blade need different hardening and so different heatening to reach that state. So those Blacksmiths became as pedantic perfectionists of a human one could be. Therefore a blacksmiths rumor also was a huge thing to the warriors when they were going to hire someone to make them a new sword. A modern example of this skill in knives is the Tahoma Field Knife by Andy ( Tran kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5iVZKV4arecd7M ), a blade with a hard spine and a soft edge, called Differential Tempering. I would guess these are skills the Germans at Korth Arms inherited by the history of German engineering, and today culminated in this precision firearm of an artwork, ... they probably heated the inside of the barrel but not its’ outside for application need to run the pistol as flawlessly one can over time. Thanks for a really informative review! I think it is Time to make a new visit to Germany, but this time for upholding peace and passion of the 1911 🤘🏻😃

In general, you get that pattern of color whenever there is a coating on the surface of a metal where the coating is in the neighborhood of 1 to several wavelengths of visible light (between 0.5 to 3 microns) due to the interference which happens in the light reflecting off the top surface of the coating and that reflecting off the metal-coating interface just a few wavelengths below. It acts like a color filter whose color depends on the exact thickness (which varies across the surface) and the angle at which you shine the light at it.

The only ones I have seen while in Germany at the factory were in 4.25” configuration; I cannot speak to Canadian compliance or why they made the change at some point previously. Unfortunately, the PRS is not coming to the US, as Korth is completely focused on revolver production.
