Kosice, Slovakia - Slovakia may be a country that most people don't think about visiting. Even if they do, most tourists spend time in Bratislava and move on back to Western Europe. However, in the Far East of Slovakia is a city known as Kosice. Home to some incredible religious icons and churches, this is a city that completely blew my mind! From the friendliest local people to incredible monuments and churches, this is a destination that you DO NOT want to miss on your next adventure through Slovakia!

Visiting Košice and properly appreciating it ? You, sir, are a man of fine taste. ;-) Your pronunciation of Hrnčiarska was accurate ! Potter street. And yes, the traditional workshops on Hrnčiarska include a pottery and ceramics workshop, all hand-manufactured locally. I bought a great ceramic teapot at the pottery workshop on Hrnčiarska a few years ago. Me and my relatives have used it during the holidays ever since, as our special teapot. Fun fact about the Košice coat of arms: It's actually the oldest municipal coat of arms in Europe. There wasn't much of a tradition in Europe to use coats of arms for cities until Louis I Great granted Košice their coat of arms (the oldest, most basic variation) in 1369. What was an oddball idea in the 14th century Kingdom of Hungary (until then, coats of arms were largelly reserved only for the nobility and a few institutions) gained traction throughout Europe and became a fairly standard thing, especially for cities and larger towns. As for the Košice coat of arms, the 1502 coat of arms has become the preferred one in the modern day simply for esthetic reasons, even if it's not the oldest. (The original 14th century version was very much in line with Louis' ruling Hungarian branch of the Anjevins. The late 15th century and early 16th century kept the main features, while adding some Polish elements in honour of Wladyslav/Vladislaus II's second, Polish wife. So the Polish-born, penultimate king of medieval Hungary, even if his reign wasn't too successful, essentially gave the Košice coat of arms its final and most popular form. There's also a fun bit of Poland-related irony in this, as Louis I already formed a Polish-Hungarian personal union back in the 14th century. ) The Lower Gate archaeological exhibit (the one underground) is usually open, but it might have been closed when you visited (due to maintenance or something else).

This is a very beautiful and quiet town. Happy drinking beer and cycling in the old town. If my flight hadn't been cancelled, I could have stayed two days longer. It's summer 2018.
