Maybe when Papa Cedric got sick, since they were already missing out on their fall crops, he kept insisting that everyone else eat most of the food and he was just too weak to fight his illness cause he cared so much about his family. A selfless soul 😢 i literally cried during the funeral montage

I think Papa Cedric just gave up on life after hearing about the famine. Living in an old, sick body is difficult. Old people often hold on to live as long as they can and struggle alone with their illnesses because don't want to worry the family. I believe Papa Cedric heard about the famine, looked at his grandchildren, realized there will be not enough food to feed everyone and someone will starve so... he lost his will to keep on living (he figured if there is one less mouth to feed the children might survive). He might also remember a similar story form the past and the trauma hit him. You could also say he had a heart attack (old age + sudden stressing situation).

Not gonna lie...I kind of did too! It caught me by surprise! I kept getting the pop up that he was nearing the end but I was definitely in denial. I'm kind of glad I just let the game run it's course cause I wasn't really looking forward to having to manually kill them off. I kind of like the surprise element even though it can be a bit jarring when unexpected. I think for the next Sims that reach old age I'll start working in sickness or just something signaling the end into the storyline when we start getting the end of life pop ups

Jasper and the knights in training should be far less impacted by the famine as The Royals likely fund this 'school/academy' and therefore they have greater access to food.

Drinking water kind of helps, but they are gonna use the bathroom like crazy. I'm not sure if its allowed in the rules or not but if your sims have high enough aspiration satisfaction points you could get them the hardly hungry trait from the rewards menu. If you're desperate and want to sacrifice some mead/cash you can have them eat the jars of honey from the bees. Or even drink the mead itself. Another option would be to make it so that one of your sims becomes a spell caster and they magically make food appear using spells. You could call it witchcraft if you want. (May is a nature themed character so her being a witch IMO isn't that out of the realm of believability. But that's pretty cheesy and kind of defeats the purpose of the challenge....) If the animals are going to get the chop... Kenric could start fishing everyday instead. Maybe that could lead to an eventual olive branch with his brother and Cas could teach him a few things? The kids could join him as well. Having everyone going to forage and hunt will be helpful too. Good luck, I'm excited and nervous to see what happens with everything!

you might try setting up Seasons holiday traditions so that they are fasting every day. It doesn't change their hunger need at all but it discourages them from eating for the first 6 hours of the day. I use it for Lent.

i think the famine could make the children realize they need to grow faster so maybe they gain a lot more skills like in archery or in sewing/knitting faster or have higher levels in those skills than they would originally before the famine started! Even with the eldest children helping with food/finances. love this series fr!

You’re brave to play with the Dickensian mod! I play tested it at the very beginning and the whole family got typhoid fever and didn’t look like they were going to survive so I got scared and took it out of my game 😂 but it does make things interesting! I hope you get your heir soon 🥰

I found the famine really hard to play through too! Constantly just managing their hunger was so hard. I had mine drink a lot of water and limited them doing anything strenuous so that they wouldn’t get so hungry so fast. They needed to use the toilet a lot, but at least they didn’t die of hunger! I also rolled for them at the start instead of the end of the famine so that the ones who died died earlier and I had a couple less mouths to feed/people to manage!

i think maybe to make this more enjoyable is to maybe put main plots on hold for the famine and focus more on famine-specific storylines ?? that makes it a lot easier for me ^^ like a little in-between that could add context to potential death rolls (ie someone gets desperate for food, goes hunting, and is killed by a bear). also, if you have mc command center, you can disable children being taken away for neglect in case the kids get REALLY hungry ! grim, but realistic ! if you don't want to do that you could also have a plotpoint where the the parents have to make the tough decision to send their (surviving) children to an orphange temporarily! just some suggestions :3 don't be afraid to bend the rules a little, what's important is havong fun!

So, I actually looked for it in wikipedia because I saw you fishing (naturally, a good idea) and didn't know how severe this famine had been. It seems that it affected most the crops, sheep and cattle, but of course people washed away fish's stew ponds and so on. So, brainstorming: 1. I don't think it would be a bad idea make food from chickens, they might not have grain but neither deseases. 2. "The famine led to a stark increase in crime, even among those not normally inclined to criminal activity, because people would resort to any means to feed themselves or their families." They could try robbing food for other neighbours/tabern/the castle. But is also true that prisioners tended to tear apart and eat the newly prisioners, lol. 3. "Harvesting wild edible roots, grasses, nuts, and bark in the forests.". Maybe a mod to play with Outdoor retreat's berries on every neighborhood or more forage work ? Wild life might be fewer because of the increase of hunting (similar that what happened to fishing) but still the best resource. 4. "Horse flesh and dogs flesh was accounted good meat, and some eat their own children.", just saying, Penelope seems sweet enough... 🤣 5. "Abandoning children to fend for themselves (see "Hansel and Gretel") and, among old people, voluntarily refusing food for the younger generation to survive." Maybe Anora is fed up for this and willingly runs away making her own survival, maybe the parents decided that Aveline and the little Penelope were not the favourites... lol. I would playing eating every possible serve of the daily meal (not allowing it to spoil, there was not time to waste food), but always starting by the kids. Also, I'd consider that if one of the kids doesn't pass the death roll, a parent could be taking their place (because of daily making the younger eat the little the family have). 6. Although every social class was striked by the famine, nobles were the last. I didn't find that much real that Jasper could go home for the memorial, but besides that, he has no bussiness eating with the peasants while he should have some more food granted as a page-boy. 7. Insects? Can you eat frogs with a mod or something like that? Wikipedia doesn't mention it, but is probable that if they were so desperate in order to eat something, they would try eating things that other species eat. 8. It's not sourcing food related, but it's clear that the whole famine situation made people look for a religious explanation. So it might be interesting if Penelope or one of the younger daughters is send to become a nun, as a family oath or willingly (starving -and frecuent fevers, because they were malnourished and weak, so prone to get sick- makes you hallucinate, they could have listen something as god's call there, lol).

And you’ve also given me some new ideas 🥰 As for it not being super realistic for Jasper to be able to come home, im sure that’s quite true but it felt important to me that he be able to be with his family. Also his family is technically merchant class now although I don’t know how realistic that really is. I definitely am far from an expert on class is the Middle Ages. I just go off the game mechanics and how the mod works in that regard. I also don’t think Jasper will ever disown his own family just because he’s a noble. Anora on the other hand I could totally see that from her. But with that said I’ve also had some ideas that Jasper might suffer a bit at training for leaving. Like they said it was ok but now he’s behind on his training and he will have to work even harder for Sir Bishop to make him a squire. Sort of like a loyalty thing. Like he has to learn to be more loyal to the crown than his family and that will be hard for him

I think you should maybe bend the rules a bit as far as the hunger goes. Not having farming or the animals at your disposal is realistic and challenging in and of itself. Given that they can hunt and forage, I’d say it’d be realistic that they can prepare what they find. If managing the hunger saps away your enjoyment and hinders your storytelling, I’d say it’s only fair to prioritize that over following the rules exactly. While playing you do have to keep in mind the limits of the Sims game, and you don’t want your sims needlessly starving or being taken away while there’s food available only for the sake of the one meal a day rule. There is so much storytelling potential from this famine, I’m very nervous for the next video which may end with a lot of death rolls. I think watching them come together as a family and work toward survival only to have to rebuild after all their losses may be a huge turning point in the story.

Thank you for this comment! I do feel like there is so much storytelling potential. I have a couple of storyline ideas that I want to for sure cover before we get to the rolls. I also really want the famine to extend through actual winter so I might adjust the seasons back down to 7 days so the next episode starts in winter. I tried playing by the rules but I realized I prefer to ignore the game mechanics most of the time and play towards a story. So I’ll make some adjustments next episode and find a happy medium between the two 🥰

RIP Papa Cedric ;; Just a thought tho - I think on a long run it could be useful to have a fridge locked in some room to keep certain food from spoiling so quickly, especially meat and pickled food since they realistically last longer and for sure were used during famine time. So perhaps you could manually put it away and save for some other time (can't recall if there was a cellar in the tavern still, so you could say that's where they are putting food and trying their best to keep it minimal but still not throw away so much when there is so little).

Rip papa cedric 😢 i definitely think if the 1 meal rule is making the game too unenjoyable you should tweak the rule a little, like maybe mum and dad just eat less than the kids or theyre allowed one meal and one snack a day. I know its supposed to be so more sims are dying and stuff but you gotta enjoy the challenge aswell. Darn you, I'm sitting in my office trying not to cry over a pixel person right now! 😅 Re: deciding when to feed them, I think during a severe famine, they wouldn't let any food go to waste. So if something is on the verge of spoiling, I think they would quickly go ahead and eat it even if their hunger isn't in the red yet, because it will still buy them more time to figure out where their next meal is going to come from without letting anything go to waste. I don't think the famine affected poultry as much, though since in the Sims we have to feed the chickens grain (which was affected) rather than just have them live off bugs and other free range food sources, it would make sense for them to trade the chickens for meat. They can always supplement that with fishing and hunting once they run out of chickens to eat.

It makes less sense for them to let the food spoil. I think you could adjust the rules and allow them to eat however nuch you want, but just not grow food or raise animals. It makes getting food harder, but it balances out that way.

I know the rules are one meal, but if there’s extra they’d surely give it to the most hungry! All that to say, I think you should play however you have the most fun! Im loving this family 🥰

@@kosmichippie Would putting the leftovers back in the larder have kept it from spoiling as quickly? That might be one way to make it stretch longer. (Granted, they didn't have refrigeration, but medieval people would still put food away in cabinets designed to prevent flies or rodents from getting at it and spoiling it more quickly, so a CC "medieval refrigerator" would serve that purpose.)

Rest in peace papa Cedric, at least it wasn’t a death by starvation. Other than his regrets, I wonder how the death will affect Jaspers outlook in future? The saddest thing is that I don’t think Penelope will have many in any memories of Papa Cedric, barely anyone remembers their toddler years. Aanora and Mae having a rivalry is certainly interesting, it’s not like Adalyn who “looks down” on Aanora’s passions, it’s someone who she openly clashes with. With Mae being a nature lover she could start scavenging while Kendric is hunting, imagine if she spotted Aanora hunting in the forest when she’s not supposed to or even poaching and snitches, family drama for sure. The two probably don’t like that the other is better then them in some aspects (Mae:- Aanoras confidence to go against society rules and do what she wants) (Aanora:- Mae’s natural knowledge of nature and her closer relationship with their father?, basically brawn vs brain), Aanora is becoming more of a lone wolf the older she gets, especially when she barely gets on with anyone barring Jasper but he’s now elsewhere, hopefully she’ll be close with Penelope as a child or she might very well just walk away from the family home. Yay! Adalyn is selling her work! Hopefully she gets the attention of the right people, maybe the current seamstress of the royal family if she goes the royal servant route or an independent seamstress looking to pass of her business to an apprentice if she goes the independent route, maybe she’ll marry a tailor if they were a thing in this time or even a cobbler. It’s so cute that Jaspers crush on Mya is forming naturally, we can only hope that love story goes well, she should definitely be the one to help him with his reading etc. a good excuse to spend time with her. I wonder how the loss on income will impact things once the tavern stops selling, it’ll certainly put a lot of strain on everyone. Also I’m curious, does the tavern have a canon name? It would be cool for it to grow and evolve as the century’s go by as a little place future generations can go back to when we eventually leave it. Definitely alter the rules in their stifling your enjoyment, maybe 3 small meal’s instead of one big one, the meals could be enough to sustain but not take to the top? No idea if this I a good idea or not 😂 Super hyped for the next one! Or maybe anxious since those famine death rolls are creeping closer.

I know it's a year later but for anyone planning to play this and worried about the famine because of the hunger aspect making it hard AF, it would NOT be uneralistic for them to eat more than once in a day if the food was going to spoil if they didn't. They wouldn't have let food go bad when they were that desperate and hungry. You also could have gotten away with breastfeeding the toddler, and therefore having an extra serving left over. Again they wouldn't have just thrown out the food when it was already made. That way the father (since he'd be doing the most strenous work of hunting and fishing) could have a second meal. When/if I ever get up the patience to go through and start this challenge for myself when I get to the famine I plan on having them serve the largest servings of the meal possible and then whatever is left over on the plates I can have the super hungry sims eat again later. It just makes sense not to waste food in that time by letting it spoil.

I agree with this all 100%! in the second famine episode I completely changed up how I played it. I even had my sims eat food if it had spoiled to show how desperate the times were. there are so many different ways you could play out the famine and I always encourage people to adapt challenge rules to fit their own play style and story so I appreciate you sharing your ideas! i also only realized you could breastfeed toddlers in the game like a couple of weeks ago so that was a missed opportunity on my part

Body type should come into play. People that naturally have more body fat should have a higher chance of surviving the famine death rolls.

I don't think selling the cow for money was realistic. Even if it was sick, people back then would still eat the meat because there was barely anything else to eat. During famine a lot of people must have been getting gravely sick by eating spoiled or bad food, not just from starving to death. Also it's logical they get the food need up by going foraging - you can find some edible things in the forests, such as random leaves or roots. Not tasty or filling enough to bring back and feed a whole family but enough to stop the hunter/gatherer from feeling hungry for a few hours. It's also important to keep the hunter/gatherer well feed compared to the rest of family because they need strength. Stay at home family members could just stay in their beds and conserve energy (less movement = less calories burn = less food needed).

Thank you for sharing! To be honest I kind of panic sold the cow. After I did it was when I decided I want to play differently next episode cause I felt rushed and like I was trying to force ideas to fit the rules so I’m going to handle the animals a bit different next episode 🥰

Me tooooo! I'm not opposed to one of the girls being the heir if it comes down to that but Jasper literally has to survive. I'm really attached to his storyline. I am worried for the side household though. I haven't had much of a chance to play in that household lately and for now they have not had anymore kids cause I feel like that makes sense for them. If something happens to Liam then maybe I'll have them keep trying for another kid if it comes to that
