ahhh i see I'm not the only one who figured out the "garbage mode" lol! I accidentally put a 1Mohm pot in place and I got that, I used to crank the feedback with delay on what I call "broken mode" (same as your garbage mode) and you get weird uncertain patterns. used to run that into a spring for a horror music band I used to play with a lot. that delay also had a oscillator that went into the audio rate range and modulate the delay at audio rate, or like weird FM delay repeats. This look great Sam!

haha you know it with the garbage mode! its golden, not heard it called that! good term jhaqjhqa. yeah its good at fm rates isnt it! this has a VC in so you can frequency modulate it :D.

Several years ago, I played guitar in the post-rock band The Farewell Monument and we used these absolutely terrible Chinese delay pedals called The Time Machine. They were Pepto Bismol pink, cost us $24, and sounded terrible but in the best lofi ways. The circuit they used pushed the PT2399 well beyond its specifications so it would sample and delay nearly 2 full seconds of audio. To achieve that they crushed the bitrate on the delayed signal so it quickly deteriorated, giving it a character similar to tape delay with severely damaged tape. With the feedback set to 100%, it exploded into a luscious noise that would damage your equipment if you weren’t Johnny on the spot with the Level knob to keep the volume within some semblance of reason-which was sometimes difficult because each unit we purchased was slightly different in its response and sound. They weren’t terribly reliable, but they were unique and absolutely crucial to the sound in a few of our songs, so between myself and the other guitarist we bought 6-7 of them just to have on hand. I still have 2. Awesome little units, I always have several PT2399s in my parts drawer because they are the perfect chip for instant lofi.

12:24 sounds a lil bit like the end of Nirvana- "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" lol Whole thing is awesome, man! I have a handful of PT2399's that I'd like to use a 555 timer and an optoisolator on to control the "Time" aspect, i.e. the resistance that can cause extreme "pitch shifting" (kinda? lol). Or a CD4024 for dividing octaves until I get down to a few Hz and use that to PWM the LED in the opto? Idk, man. I'm drinking wine so I'll shut up... for now lol Love what you do!

Having three chips plays to the strengths of the pt2399. I think one thing I would change with only one chip is the lack of a hard sync to a clock, it's not clean enough nor dirty enough, adding two more chips gets all that digital fighting going on making whole new things. Nice demo.
@THISMUSEUMISNOTOBSOLETE

I was playing around with sync and such. but I came the conclusion after adding a lot of bulk to the circuit, I thought to myself why would I sync a delay? the whole thing about having a delay with 3 delays is it goes out of sync. I am building these for my touring rig, but im nearly done with that synth voice, I have saved my findings on the sync functions for the more involved delay module im making in my "macro" module series which im gunna be getting to after the next 2 modules coming out :).
@THISMUSEUMISNOTOBSOLETE
@THISMUSEUMISNOTOBSOLETE 4 жыл бұрын
but yeah 1 chip maybe sync, however I have never understood why one would sync a delay. for instance when im working in a writing session remotely at someones place and I need to use a computer for instance, the first thing I do is turn the delays of bpm control haha. it just defeats the object in my opinion
@THISMUSEUMISNOTOBSOLETE
@THISMUSEUMISNOTOBSOLETE 4 жыл бұрын
however the first time I built one I was obsessed with the idea of syncing delays, so who knows. maybe we all go through phases of wanted synced and unsynced delays :D

indeed! funnily enough after I did this because im doing a vid on the other channel, I looked around to see how many have been made with pt2399's. and blimey there are a lot of em! not many with 3 chips in a none reverb setup. but yeah, I have found (not including the countless guitar pedals) mfos, cgs, befaco, Pittsburgh modular, synthrotek, just found schmitzbitz. it seems its is a very popular chip. the reason being is its super easy to work with. not the longest delay times, but it makes up for that with sheer strange character

Nah, Chinese goods can be excellent as well as poor. It depends on what part of the market you aim for. It's difficult because the usual online retailers are useless at denoting good brands versus bad, unlike here in the west. Think on this - the most reliable electronics in the world are built in China using Chinese components. The same stuff made for their own market is often complete shit. It's one of the weird ways China works. I recommend you go watch serpentza on this matter where he discusses how his DJMavic Pro drone caused him headaches when he lived in China.

@THISMUSEUMISNOTOBSOLETE
@THISMUSEUMISNOTOBSOLETE 4 жыл бұрын
hey calabiyou unfortunately I have come to the conclusion as of late to not jump into eurorack. I have a vision which I stand by that it is just too small, and I dont want to contribute my efforts to it, I strongly believe bigger and simpler is better. Kosmo modules are completely compatible with eurorack just the rails are a little further apart. Its built in the same way as eurorack so not expensive parts like 5u, and yeah just in my opinion more suited to music making. I hope that makes sense because as of late a lot of people have contacted me either requesting it or asking to strike some sort of business deal, and im gunna stand by kosmo. :).

@@256k_ I think that goes against everything Sam just said. Sam is passionate about Kosmo format and a lot of us have adopted it as well. Many of us have both Kosmo AND Eurorack modules and they will play nicely with one another. I think to take his designs, turn them into Eurorack when he has consciously not gone that route and not accepted any business deals to do so, and then turn around and profit off of said Eurorack PCB's is disrespectful. Just sayin'.
