“The Song of Halil’s Wedding”.
Isa Elezi-Lekgjekaj (Isa Muriqi), voice and lahuta (Rugova, Kosovo).
This video presents the opening twenty verses of a performance of the “Song of Halil’s wedding”. It is part of the legendary epic cycle of Kreshnike, the borders heroes; the protagonists are the two brothers Muji and Halil and their friends, and the song tells the story of the heroic feats accomplished by the young Halil in order to marry the beautiful Gjeline, daughter of the king of Talir. These songs are often shared among different cultures and languages of the Balcanic area. Singers accompany themselves with a one string fiddle, known as gusle in the Slavic languages and lahuta in Albanian. Today the most important area of presence of these songs is the region of Rugova, in Kosovo, at the border with Montenegro. They are still performed during social gathering, festivities and wedding parties. The singers ‘compose in performance’ their song, re-combining each time a repertory of verses and expressions (formulae) in different ways, while keeping always the core of the story to be narrated.
Isa Elezi-Lekgjekaj is today widely recognized as the greatest living performer of Rugova.
The importance of legendary epic songs in the border areas between Montenegro, Bosnia, Albania and Serbia, was, among others, highlighted by the fundamental research of Milman Parry and Albert Lord in the 30s of the last century; the research and the study of these repertoires, in relation to the writing of the Homeric epic, allowed the two scholars to focus on concepts of fundamental importance in the study of both written and oral epic traditions. Moreover, some of the landmark figures of ethnomusicology like George Herzog and Béla Bartók were attracted by the musical features of these songs and provided the first significant analytical contributions.
The song of Halil was performed during the concert The legendary epic of Kosovo, promoted by the Institute of Comparative Music Studies at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini. The event, coordinated by Nicola Scaldaferri, was introduced by a seminar with David Elmer, Zymer Neziri and Ettore Cingano, and saw the collaboration of Leav (University of Milan), Milman Parry Collection of Oral Literature, Harvard University, Albanological Institute of Prishtina, Durham University's Department of Music.

@@klmsps5576, ignorant is your comment because you don't understand the difference between "Epic of Kosovo" and "Albanian Epic Songs". Saying this is Epic of Kosovo means these are exclussive songs of Kosovo. But saying these are Albanian Epic Songs include Albania as well as Kosovo. Besides, in Kosovo the Epic Songs of the Kreshniks went extinct, because they were forgotten due to the Yugoslav regime which didn't allow those songs! In Kosovo people came in touch with these songs after the Yugoslav regime allowed cultural exchange between Albania and Kosovo. I know people of the Albanian Music Ensamble who went to Kosovo and told me exactly this. So don't tell me fairy tales.

There may have been someone here and there, who knew the songs of the Kreshniks, but not the broad mass of the population in Kosovo. As I said above, I have friends who have been part of the Ansambli Shtetror i Këngëve dhe Valleve and they had exchange programs with Kosovo. When they went to Kosovo, sports halls and theaters were filled with spectators. But the Albanian Epic Songs were not known at all by the viewers. In Albania, for example, in contrast to Kosovo, the songs of the Kreshniks were taught in school, not only the songs but also the poetry and the mythology. All this was part of the Albanian language class. Mos ma merr për ters, nuk e kam për të keqe dhe as për desinformim, por thjeshtë disa gjëra duhen thënë ashtu siç janë. Kalofsh mirë.

Basically just a remade Epic Bosniak Song. The Hrnjica brothers (Mujo, Halil and Omer) are actual people that were recorded as Hajduks in Velika Kladuša, in the Krajina region of Bosnia in the 17th century. Same thing applies for Gjerg Elez Alia. Which is based on a Ottoman Bey that died in Bosnia. Epic songs about him emerged in the end of the 15th century again in the Krajina region in Bosnia. Which were later transmitted by mutlilingual guslars (lahutare) to Albanian.

To those debating here, that these folk epics are Bosnian or Serb or whatever other slavic background it has. Let's step back for 1 second from your political (hostile) view. Let's take some historical ground facts. I quote from the book Kosovo A Short History (Sir Noel Malcolm, professor for history at Oxford - we can agree that it's one of the best universities in the world): "No ethnic groups in the Balkans ever lived in completely watertight compartments; there has been assimilation in almost every direction...." later he states: "...in nearby areas such as the Sandzak the Slavicization of Albanians continued well into the twentieth century. Some of the bilingual singers of folk epics recorded there by Albert Lord and Milman Parry in the 1930s came from villages, or families, which had once been Albanian but were now mainly Slav-speaking" (page 197). This song is 100% Albanian, you can believe it or not, it won't change the history. Nor does any Albanian here want you to believe it. Because it's a historical fact. It doesn't make Bosnian or Serbia culture worse, it doesn't attack them, it doesn't do anything to it, besides claiming this instrument and the epic folk songs as theirs - which they are. Yet still there are for sure also really well playing gusle artists or beautiful singing Serbs or Bosnian. It doesn't mean that one culture is better than the other, because it's simply not true. Peace won't be upon the Balkans if people fight even about stuff like this, as if their life depends on it. Sit back and enjoy this old guy playing and singing for god's sake.

Fakt!

Lahuta isn't even an original Albanian word. Anyone with a bit of common sense can clearly see that it's the loanword meaning lute, probably from some older form of Italian. On the other hand, the Slavs from Western Balkans have their own original word for it - gusle. I won't go into who was here first and such stuff, but if it was originally an Albanian instrument, you would presume that they would have their native name for it, and not name it after some foreign instrument, that doesn't even look or work alike.
@keno2285
@keno2285 Жыл бұрын
Respect for the comment, just like Ciftelija is a loanword. My theory is Lahuta is from Oud/Ut, Middle Eastern instrument. It is also possible it is from Italian since 40% of the Albanian language is from Latin.

@@keno2285 The person was saying that it was adopted from Italians, Lute. This was exclusively an instrument played by native highlanders of the northern Balkans. It was the other way around, when Slavs showed up in the Balkans they also adopted or because of the Natives, like Iliro/Thraco/Arber who became Slavicized made these instruments and even some of the costumes we see similarities to north Albanians part of what became the South Slav nations. Not to mention that the DNA studies shows that of the Slavicized(linguistically) natives who do not belong to the Slavic DNA group, but prior to that which corresponds with that of Albanians.

@nikizelen5878 Жыл бұрын
I never said that albanians took the instrument from the Italians, just the name. Again, I'm not arguing about who was here first, just the origin of gusle. Gusle are continuously present in all of the slavic tribes of west balkans, except slovenia, and only the most pannonian parts of croatia, which means in bosnia, herzegovina, dalmatia, all parts of serbia, etc. If it was really originally an albanian instrument, someone would presume that it would be spread in at least in more than a half of albania

Sandzak historically had a large Albanian population, many people in eastern Sandzak are of Albanian origin. The majority of these songs were recorded on paper by Albanian friars Bernardin Palaj nd Shtjefën Gjecovi, furthermore they're both in the Balkans, so its not surprising there is overlap. There are some folk tales that exist in every culture. If you were able to or took the time, you would see the Albanian version has some differences. First, that Gjeto is Muj's original name the way Gjergj Elez Alia (Alia Dzerdzelez) name is Gjergj, not Đorđe, Second, presence of sworn virgins, 3rd. Many other plot differences.

@@amaranthine90 These songs originate from Bosniak epic…there’s no shame in admitting that. Kreshnik is proto Slavic from Bosnian Krajišnik a frontier man / warrior / hero. Gjeto also wasn’t his name, gjeto originates from Bosnian Četa/Četo. Četo-baša meaning leader of the soldiers. Mujo is the Bosnian shortening of Mustafa and Ale Đerzelez was a totally different person…from east Bosnia. Ottoman documentation’s prove where these men were from.

Oh dear those Goranci, albanized Serbs, using Serbian traditions, instruments and have even still Serbian surnames like Ullakoviç, Krasniqi etc. You call this piece Kreshnike? Kreshnik is a used name amongst albanized Serbs in Kosovo Metohija and nowadays northern Albania, which was totally Serbian, before the Ottoman occupation. Kreshnik comes from Serbian „Krajeshnik“, the stem „Kraj“ means border and the suffix -nik is a Serbian, in general a Slavic suffix. Krajeshnik means frontiersman, those who fought against the Ottomans, before they got finally islamized and later therefore easier albanized, since the Albanians cooperated with the Ottomans and changed their religion, to gain other lands and other benefits as albanizing their neighbours. Kreshnik is a Serbian name and the instrument called Gusle, in Albanian they just took over a new name from Latin, Lauta, ot described this Serbian insgrument. The way this piece is played, is from Serbian Gusle epic play art, of the so called Kosovo cycle of Serbian poetry. This is Serbian and has nothing to do with Albania.

Its just a head wrap. And i love how you hate us and arabs, as you are supposedly great. If i was a serb i wouldve fucking commited suicide. You know what they say:"a good serb is a dead one"

@@albinh.3149 Russian immigrants? How when Serbs are 100% autochtone in the balkans. U Albanians (Sqipetarians) believe in something which is absolutely not true believing to be "Illyrian" while the world knows that the Albanians camed to the balkans in the 11th century AD. Read Mikhail Ataliotis a witness who lived in that time and saw how the Albanians camed. Or read Pope Aenea Silvio Piccolomini from the 14th century he wrote about the Albanians and he said in his book that the Albanian Language is unintelligible for the Greeks and for the ILLYRIANS(Serbs). Go see what todays genetics have to say about Serbian DNA and Albanian DNA and everything wil be clear. Albanians are absolutely not illyrians. But a Caucasian tribe who escaped from there becouse of the war in the 7th century between the Arabs and the Khazars. KOSOVO IS SERBIA

@@ukleti.v1284 obviously you don't have any clue about the Balkan history..Serbs were originally from North Persia, the traditional folk costume is the same. Then they moved to the karpats and got banished by Russia. After that they moved to Europe as a part of them settled in north east Germany which is called sorbian and the other part settled dow in the balkan in the 700s. At that time illyrians were on the balkan since many thousands of years

This is an original albanian instrument, this song is extremly old and based on the writings this song has been always played with this instrument(Lahutè) and one of the oldest books in albanians history mentions this albanian instrument. DON'T TALK WITHOUT FACTS, HATE IS SOMETHING ELSE, KEEP IT FOR YOURSELF.
