I was on the fence on this game, never been a huge fan of jrpg's outside FF7-9 (and 12), but got it anyway... have to say, for first 10 hours I agree'd with most of what's in this video, but still enjoyed it, but as soon as I properly understood the battle system... it's incredibly satisfying when you pull of some great combo's and take down a unique mob a few levels higher than you, I'm loving the game a lot and love the deep customisation it has, there is a lot you can tinker with, and it's a lot of fun! Completely 100% behind you on those guards on the megaship... man, they drove me nuts :D

It bugs me enough to point out: Dromarch says "Make haste and RETRIEVE IT," referring to the green potion bottle that flew off just as he started talking in the video. Dromarch is a healing Blade, so many of his voice clips focus on keeping the party at good health.

For what it's worth, I barely remember JRPG instruction manuals - the good, SNES, in-color variety, anyway. Back then, I either rented the games and never got a manual, or bought them used (I called half a dozen stores looking for the best price for Super Mario RPG, which varied even between Target and Wal-Mart, and the best price was $55 for a used copy at a mom and pop used game store). Anyway, I loved this review of the game. I can tell that a lot of stuff is going to drive me crazy, and a lot of other stuff is going to be a lot of fun.

Aw I think it's a nice change of pace to have normal accents be in a major game. Not that I don't like American accents but yeah it nice, it's different. I also miss the manuals.
@vargasprime0946 жыл бұрын
I think this reflects why my fondness for JRPGs has waned over time (aside from me just getting older). I was more willing to put up with overbearing exposition and tutorializing when the systems were simpler and less profuse. Recent JRPGs like Xenoblade pile systems on top of systems that, even if I *wanted* to manage them all, result in tedious tutorials and "idiotic protagonist" dialogue that I can't tolerate for very long anymore.

Having played through all the previous Xeno games (even the profoundly trainwreck-y Xenosaga) I love Tetsuya Takahashi for his crazy sense of thematic and physical scope and his wild sci-fi detours into Judeo-Christian mysticism, yet hate him for his total lack of focus or restraint and grating taste in animu aesthetics. I remember reading somewhere that Japanese players also complained about the repetitive voice clips in these games, so it’s not (just) a cultural thing.

Hey, tiny correction: Yasunori Mitsuda didn’t compose ALL the music for this game. The battle themes were handled by a composer group called ACE, and I believe a lot of the field themes were composed by a talented (relative) newbie called Manami Kiyota, both of whom also worked on the first Xenoblade. I think Mitsuda mostly handled “event music”.
@Orbi6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, neither the battle nor field theme in the video were composed by Mitsuda, according to the soundtrack samplers out right now. It's an oversimplification that you see a lot with Japanese soundtracks especially, pinning the entire soundtrack on a marquee artist. Meguro with Persona and Okabe with Nier are major examples from this year.
