【About Asian Small-clawed Otters】
First, otters are different from sea otters.
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, but otters can live both on the ground and in water.
A few years ago, trafficking otters became a serious problem, and in 2019, CITES (Washington Convention) increased the classification of otters from CITESⅡ to CITES I, which banned international trade.
Having an otter as a pet is illegal in most countries. However, in Japan, otters can be traded, although it is limited to domestic breeds only.
Currently, severe restrictions are in place for buying and selling otters in Japan. For example, microchips need to be inserted in both babies and parents, and owners need a special permit. Circumstances of birth must also be reported in detail.
As a result, there is currently no buying and selling of baby otters in the market. There is a severe penalty for selling and buying otters with unknown birth origins without permits. This was effective in eliminating trafficking, and we don’t see otter trafficking on the news anymore.
Kotaro and Hana were both born in Japan and have permits.
It is so much work to have an otter as a pet. You need to be ready for more than its cuteness. They are loud, and they sometimes bite you. Food and water get very expensive, and you cannot keep otters in cages because they are active. Also, we never leave them at home. We always look after them closely like we do with human children, and our top priority is always them.
If you want to have an otter as a pet, you must be able to follow the law and devote your life to it. If you don’t have that resolve, you should never have one as a pet.

Actually the under the futon/bed was a very dangerous place to take cover from an earthquake, don't hide under things that can compress, always look for either a frame in a structural wall, a safe zone or at least a structure that's taller than you and can take the hit of a collapsing ceiling. The stairs were a somewhat better place to take cover if you are the size of Hana.

I just love it so much every single time Kotaro casually appears eating in his peculiar manner. Earthquakes are scary, man! The only one I’ve experienced (that I can remember) was way back during my elementary days. Was home alone and attempting to make Kool-Aid (didn’t go so well). All a sudden, everything on the walls starts shaking! Now, it wasn’t a HUGE earthquake, but still kinda freaky, especially being a young kid home alone. Funny enough, my dad was apparently waiting for a train to go by when the earthquake happened, so he didn’t even realize there’d been an earthquake until he heard others talking about it. He just thought the shaking was from the train! He did say he thought the shaking was unusually strong to come from being near a train…

I've never experienced an earthquake but I have seen what the effect of a big one can do. I went on a school trip to Iceland and one of the towns we visited was hit with a magnitude 6 (from memory) earthquake in 2008. One of the Fischer's was in the middle of the shopping mall and instead of patching up the floor with new flooring to make it look like nothing happened, they put glass in the spaces between the floor so you could stand on top and see down into the Fischer. It's Insane how powerful earthquakes are and it makes you realise how gigantic something like that earthquake in Japan in 2011 was. Hopefully my ramblings are mildly interesting 😃

I agree. I live in Louisiana and do not experience earthquakes either. We get hurricanes. Indeed, very happy to hear that all of you are okay. When the camera began to shake, it looked scary.
