just a note about the beginning: kowloon walled city was a real place, and at the time, despite being an exclave in hong kong, was technically part of china and was SUPPOSED to be governed by china, but it was so densely populated that any effort to do so became almost impossible considering it was essentially a 6 acre large apartment complex, and without hong kong having the jurisdiction to do anything about what the residents were doing, they basically governed themselves. the entire "city" was destroyed in 1995 when hong kong was ceded back to china as part of the 99 year lease britain had on hong kong, it was taken down due to fire hazards, height restrictions due to the nearby airport, overcrowding, supposed gang affiliations, ect. so technically saying china instead of hong kong at the beginning still wouldve been correct, but nevertheless i just wanted to share this as a fun fact cuz the entire thing is very interesting to look into.
@csar07.9 ай бұрын
I think it was the most densely populated city on earth at one point, most of the rooms didnt even have any windows or light. Now in Hong Kong, theres a park that was built where it used to be named after it.

Theory: I think the ghosts were trying to help you escape. They kept getting the player to move down specific paths by blocking exits and leaving little hints and clues. They died there and I think they wanted to make sure that the city didn't claim another victim.
@sugoidxth9 ай бұрын
Maybe. Contradicts getting killed in the chase sequence. Although, seeing as even the whole city is supposed to be a hallucination - it's very possible to have some time-screwery involved.

This made me get up and make tea. Also side note, theres some super interesting docs about Kowloon on youtube. A legal loophole between Britain, China and Hong Kong basically let a micro-city grow completely free of any government oversight. There was crime and sanitation issues, but there was also thriving community of people raising families, living and working together. Theres a reason so many cyberpunk/futurepunk movies and comics used kowloon as an inspiration.

What really makes this game scary is that at the start we are told the year is 1999 when a young student needed cheap housing. Then at the end of the game once we are home safe we see the news about how the walled city was demolished in 1994, which was five years BEFORE we the player were poking around. This all ads to the supernatural aspect of this will done game.

Hi, huge love from HK!❤ always love watching Sean's videos, especially excited to see such a good horror game based on the history of Kowloon Walled City! As someone who was born, grew up and currently living in hk, seeing an authentic and detailed representation of our tiny city and its history is such a gem 💫ngl even rn in the present Kowloon (in fact all across hk) still have buildings like this, with tones of people living in there. If you were to travel to hk and choose to stay in some cheaper options, you could actually stay in buildings like this (not with the bleeding the limbs tho). And they are mostly much cleaner. Just wanna shout out to the game developers for the huge attention to details, and getting them right - the flats' gates, plastic bags hanging near bed, graffiti, electricity meter, etc. are so on point! Just a side-note: if you were to travel to hk, we do have a park called Kowloon Walled City Park 九龍寨城公園, located in the original location of Kowloon Walled City, keeping fractions and some stuff from this part of history.

Just a little trivia why you see lots of asian things display a toilet on high places in their housing, it's because some civilization areas in asia (especially low economics) are below water level (like lower than the sewer level) so they need to put the toilet higher to prevent water coming out of it because it's frequently flooded.

Oh interesting. Makes sense! 👍

oh, thanks for the info, I never knew that. Also, weirdly enough, some places do this for no reason. Saw at apartment with a toilet like that in the area with no flooding issues, still confused by the decision

I'm always happy when Kowloon gets featured in video games/movies! I did a report on Kowloon when I was in Asian studies in college. Interesting to note is that there were actually families in the "city" trying to live and raise their children despite the crime and gang activity. It wasn't all just demons lurking around corners.
@taradreams39 ай бұрын
So true! I also wrote a paper on the city in college and I find people often focus on the crime and poor living conditions of the city, but there are always two sides to everything. There were a lot of hard working families just trying to make a living. And a lot of unregistered doctors and dentists!

So this was right before Kowloon Walled City was torn down, and they had relocated most of its residents, save for some holdouts. You end up with a claustrophobic place that is nearly empty. Inspired setting. Edit: It actually was torn down in 1994. Guess I should have waited till the end to comment. Still think it is an inspired setting. Would love to see a whole game there. Something that really emphasizes claustrophobia.
