So Aneira means snow and "static" is sometimes called snow. I wonder if the meaning of the game is a double meaning in itself. Chasing Static could be a reference to how the character kept seeing her throughout the game or how the dad was trying to hard to get to her when she died.

Theory: I believe at some point in time, a meteorite crashed into the lake by Hearth, and it began to cause people to lose their minds. They may have been able to see figures of the afterlife, such as the one which follows you around, and were driven mad or to suicide. After the police failed to contain the situation, the scientists came to investigate what was happening. Around this time, Chris Sr. met Aneira at the nearby cafe, who was far enough from Hearth and lived in the other direction to not be driven mad by the meteor. At some point, Chris Sr. and Aneira have a son (Chris Jr.). Because mom works at hotspot Site A (cafe) and dad works around the meteor heavily, Chris Jr. is born with a natural resilience to the rock’s side effects. Eventually, Aneira somehow dies (possibly from a car crash, which is why Chris gets into one as he drives from the cafe), and Chris Jr. is left motherless. Senior goes mad and uses the people of Hearth in experiments to find a way to contact Aneira, since those people have been driven insane by being able to see ghosts. The subjects fail, as the side effects of the experiments kill them. However, Chris Jr. one day says he can see the spirits too, and his father realizes his son has a great resilience to the side effects of the meteor. Senior subjects Jr. to everyday tests, until he finally cracks the code to accessing the afterlife. However, Helen, a kinder scientist, helps Jr. escape to a foster family. This may have been during the first major Sites failure that was alluded to by the guy in the hotel. This may have caused Senior to go even more mad, sacrificing more innocents to try to replicate his son’s success (the vision of mass graves during the astral section at the end). They all failed, meanwhile another failure at all three sites occurred again. The unknown female scientist said the chances of a simultaneous failure is (probably close to zero), so we can infer that either a spectral force caused the failures (Aneira reaching from beyond the grave to stop Chris Sr. ?) or a human close to the action did it themselves (Helen interfering both times?). At the same time as this second failure, a scientist named Isaac allowed himself to be consumed by the meteor, and he lost his mind and killed many scientists (possibly including Helen). At some point though, Helen does die, and this is how she is able to aid Chris in the parallel world. This could explain why she cuts out after Chris has fixed the sites, but is present at Echo Garden again: she has a stronger presence there because she died there.

This is brilliant and i fully believe that this could pretty much explain the backstory to this game, as i was reading i was going slightly blind from all the words but im glad i read it all. I also think that there could be more about the Isaac person and that maybe he went insane and also tried to mess stuff up to try to destroy the lab work and make the ghosts go away, but also i still think it could've 100% been Helen.

There is a secret ending in this game where you can “kill” the apparitions and get a computer screen think kinda solidifying that at least some of it was real. A lot of it is confusing and hard to explain but what I got from it is this rock fell, they started experimenting, found out ppl born after the rock had powers, Chris’s father experimented on him, he ends up leaving, and later coming back to solve everything because he feels this pull, I think Helen was a “ghost” guiding him because of his powers and so was his mom. (To get said secret a ending you have to grab a gun thing in the middle of the woods and kill 3 separate of those weird floating guys)
@kaygo6244

I think that aneira is the mum because the game at some point said that she was dead, the mother was also dead and we can guess that Chris's father was trying to bring her back. I think he fucked it up somehow and that's why we can see/interact with her (the powers probably also help with that)

@@kaygo6244 We know that someone in charge at Echo Labs wanted to bring back their loved one and it seemed to be the name Aneira. I had thought it would be the father of Aneira who was distant but wanted to get in touch with her, the one she described, but instead we're not really given much of an answer at all. She's clearly more important than initially shown, but the game does a piss-poor job of explaining anything, so I guess we'll never know.

I actually love how you can see Jack joking around a lot at the start but the more the story progresses, the more intrigued he becomes, the less jokes he makes and the more serious he takes it. I like serious Jack so much more because this game is fantastic, it's also 1 of the few games where the story got really interesting. KZbinrs joking around is for entertaining purposes but to me, it's way more entertaining when a KZbinr gets equally involved into the game as I do. I love the exploration, optional storytelling, the atmosphere, everything. I'm not 1 to buy games that I've watched a full playthrough of but... this is an exception. I might not even play it but just to support the devs, I will. I hopes of them making more like this! This was amazing. A few crashes can be looked past.

That is a pet peeve of mine. I have nyctophobia which does translate to games. A lot of developers especially indie ones need to learn how flashlights work. I refuse to play if you make your flashlight is dimmer than a broken bulb, beam narrower than a jar lid and only works for things that are less than 2 inches in front of you. I forgot the name of the game but its flashlight was so good. It had a decent range and actually lit up around the beam instead of just the beam. My only qualm was that it was finicky close up. It's not fun or fair when you make your flashlight the worse thing ever. It doesn't make it scarier it only makes it frustrating. I don't want to fumble around in the dark cause your flashlight is crap.

From what i can tell, a meteor fell to earth and it connected the living and the dead together. mc's dad was leading research on it until his wife, Aneira, died. from then onwards he gets obsessed with getting her back through the rock's powers, but the test subjects being used to talk to the dead were facing SEVERE repercussions for doing so. Enter Chris. He was born after the rock fell and was thus born with the ability to see these 'echoes'. when he told about this to his dad, his father convinced him he was sick and got him to start visiting the facility in order to use him as a guinea pig. lo and behold eventually chris was confined to the echo garden against his will and made to undergo the same tests as the other test subjects, only he faced nearly no problems due to his powers. It was only when Helena helped him escape did he manage to leave, returning only upon his father's death. The cafe is where his mother used to work, the town is where they lived and where the meteor fell and in the final section, an echo of helen is basically unlocking chris' repressed memories.

Not trying to “um actually” you here, but many severe schizophrenics _don’t_ sneeze unless their sinuses are significantly irritated (think a cloud of flour being blown in their face). The leading theory is that the neurological pathway responsible for a person’s sneeze reaction, known as the Fitz Pathway, is extremely “narrow” if that makes sense, or under-sensitive, as a random side effect of their unique brain chemistry. They simply don’t feel the urge to sneeze as easily as most people do. Source: none, I just made all that up. Sounds neat, though, right? 😎

GAME EXPLAINED (My theory): Years ago a meteorite lands in the city of Hearth and starts affecting the people who live there. For this reason the whole city is put under quarantine and scientists are called in to investigate. One of whom is Chris's father. As they research the town and the meteorite they come to the conclusion that the stone is emitting a gas that makes people go crazy enough to hurt or kill others. (Isaac, woman with a knife against a police officer, hang man). But this doesn't seem to have the same effect on the children. Instead, children seem to be able to connect with the past and see things that have happened. So the research team starts playing with this theory. They set up a machine to the meteorite in the main lab and puts children in the chairs around it to document their neurological reactions to find out how this is all possible. Chris, also having been born in Hearth, falls victim to the research and as he is one of the kids with the strongest abilities, he lasts longer than others and becomes the teams favourite subject. Especially since his father now has a personal motivation for this project: To reconnect with Chris's mom Aneira. So what happened? This is what I speculate: Because of Isaacs rampage the research had to be put on halt as it was difficult to get the police involve now that the project had taken an illegal turn (the testing on children). So Helen, who was more of a parent to Chris than his father, took Chris and escaped. But the effect of the meteorite has already left a permenant imprint on Chris which causes his powers to activate once he returns to Hearth after his dads funeral. He meets his mother from when she was younger, and doesn't realize that it's her. Probably because he was very little when she passed and couldnt bring photos of her when he left Hearth as a child. The rest of the game from here on out is basically Chris seeing echoes of what this research had come to and why they suddenly had to escape. So what is the condition of Hearth? As we can see at the end of the game, the city is no longer in a toxic condition and it doesn't look abandoned either. On the contrary, through out the game you catch glimts of a man and, later, a grandmother walking down the street. You hear people sneezing and children coughing. All of this, suggesting that Chris isn't seeing Hearth as it is right now, but rather he is seeing the city as it was when he was little. Then what about the meteorite? Wait! There is more! A secret ending you can only get if you find a gun that's been hidden in the woods and then kill three phantoms (the three floating lights that freaked Sean out). This will unlock some equipment at the facility which will give a cut scene at the end of the game showing a research facility located in some snowy mountains. So maybe the meteorite was moved? Lastly, what are the phantoms? I don't know. THE END Ps. This is just a theory

Namely when I was younger I had several instances where I saw a strange man moving through my house or in the doorway to my room before disappearing. Freaked me out and my folks told me I was just seeing things or imagining them. Fast forward to the lockdowns, I am moving through the upstairs, day 4 of being unable to sleep due to the virus when I start seeing the upstairs with its old wallpaper before seeing what looked like myself but younger on my bed, the room appearing different from how it was at the time. Hi Sean, I had a test done today and they found two lumps in my chest. I have come home very sad and I have seen that you uploaded a video. I know that my comment will be lost but you have helped me to make the day more bearable and you have made me forget about the lumps in my chest for a couple of hours. I just wanted to say thank you for making our days more bearable, I know I'm not the only one.

I don't know if it's from what ever engine/framework they used, but one detail that gives me great hope for these guys: 9:19 It interrupts a statement with a triggered statement, and properly goes back to repeating the interrupted message. Nice attention to detail that often goes unaddressed in other games. If that's solely on the game engine then... oh well, good job picking one that works! lol
