We tried to recreate an interesting way of cooking in a recent living history trip. This method has been described by Guillaume Levasseur de Beauplan in his famous work “Description of Ukraine, several provinces of the Kingdom of Poland, stretching from the borders of Muscovy to Transylvania”.
Here is a quote from this book:
“I remember once meeting a Cossack on the Samara River, who was cooking fish in a wooden bucket (this bucket Polish and Cossacks cling to the saddle behind the cantle to water the horses). For this, he burned the stones on the fire, and then threw them on the bottom of the bucket, repeating this until the water has boiled and the fish has cooked.”
