It's tricky, KP, using terms like IQ when referring to animals. I know that scientists (such as marine biologists) must resist the temptation to anthropomorphize the behavior of their subjects, but I can't help thinking that sea otters are really freaking smart. A vast array of their survival skills must be "learned," always a sign of higher intelligence in the animal kingdom. Also, I've seen videos where they spontaneously use their own creative abilities to problem solve. I heard one trainer say that her otters figure out puzzles she creates for them faster than she can think up new ones. It seems to me that it's the creative aspect of this behavior -- the ability to "figure things out" -- that denotes their special intelligence. This is much different than teaching a seal to jump through a hoop. And, of course, their use of tools is the most celebrated indication of their intelligence. (Incidentally, about 10 years ago I saw Jane Goodall speak in person before a packed audience at a local university. I was amazed at the number of young people -- even high school students -- who were there and knew who she was. I felt very hopeful that evening.)
