I think Phil was at his best was when he did his imitation of Art Bell. The voice, the manner of speaking, his points of emphasis, the bumper music, his 'guests,' were all spot on. The exorcism of a demon from someone's asshole was priceless. His best was lampooning Art's sponsors: the 25 years worth of freeze dried food, the fall out shelters, etc. Peeman enterprises; classic. Even Art Bell though it was hilarious.

One of the all time Phil Hendrie bits was back in early 2003 when Hendrie (as guest Dean Wheeler) said that the World Trade Center memorial should also have the names of the ten hijackers to recognize that they ‘did their best’. The caller outrage and Wheeler's constant defense of his position that followed was some of the funniest radio ever.

I have been listening to Phil religiously since the 90s when visiting my aunt in LA. Most top comics have "maybe" 1 hour of solid material and Phil would do 3 hours of absolute comedy gold EVERY DAY (now his web version is shorter). But there are thousands and thousands of hours of original material with 50-60 characters on his website archives all of it completely original. Whereas a show like The Simpsons has a whole team of writers and voice actors creating that world the entire menagerie of characters on PHS all comes out of the brain of one guy. Over thew years, I have have tried to turn on just about everyone in my life to Phil. The people that get it, recognize how genius it is. But, for the average person, even when you tell them that he is doing the voices of 1,2,3...sometimes 7 characters all at once many people just can't fathom it. It breaks their brain. It's just way over the head of a huge percentage of the population that think a catch phrase like "Git 'er done" is funny. Phil is the GOAT.

Phil did some of his best stuff in Miami on WIOD. He did a parody of a security guard that got fired for leaving the gatehouse and putting the gate in the up position. Phil was having a 3 way conversation with himself. One was him doing the interview and the other person was the guy complaining about the security guard and the 3rd person was the condo association manager representing the condominium. The guy complaining about the security guard told Phil, do you know where they found the guard? The condo association manager then said, look that was a while ago, that particular guard is no longer working with the condo association. Then the guy who is complaining about the guard says, let me tell your radio audience why that particular security guard is no longer working there. The reason is, they found the guard in the bushes with his thumb up his ass! I had to pull over. I was gonna crash. I couldn’t stop laughing. Then, he says, the police arrived and one of the veteran senior police officers said, I’ve been in law enforcement for 25 years and I never saw something like this, ever. The security guard was wearing a watch on his wrist. His thumb was so far up his ass, the police officer said, you couldn’t tell what time it was on his wrist watch. Then Phil continues on with the two of his voices arguing over the incident. Then the complaining condo home owner said, Phil, they had to hire a wench company to pull the guard’s thumb outta his ass. It was so far stuck up there. You know Phil has to have a few screws loose to come up with this type material and to pull it off deadpan. A person that doesn’t know about Phil’s shtick, just tuning in, has to wonder, is this real or what?

I've been looking for the Phil Hendrie show that had an Irish priest saying that the people who died in the Thailand tsunami were responsible to find a priest and get the last rites, and if they didn't, they would go to hell. It goes on with the priest obsessing with not having his tea time interrupted while dying people desperately try to get the last rites. Do NOT bother the priest while he's having his tea. But he goes on and on that no matter how hard it is to make their way to the church through the waters, if they fail to go and get last rites, they WILL go to hell and it will be their own fault. It was one of the funniest bits I've ever heard. It was, of course, shortly after that tsunami, which was, I think, in 2004. People used to call in, furious, to tell off the "guest", not realizing it was Phil doing the voice. This was when he was on 640am Los Angeles. Please find it if anyone has a recording of it! This was before he was being filmed, I think.

Since Phil is always pulling people's leg, my neighbor from years ago decided to pull Phil's leg and called in complaining that he was doctor and that the doctor Phil had on (which was just one of Phil's impressions) was making fun of the profession and that he was suing the radio station for slander and that his son had committed suicide over that same segment that Phil aired and he was going to have a group protest outside the radio station for months until Phil apologized and he was going to talk to advertisers to stop doing business with the show. Eventually, I think it was the station manager or someone from the show that called my neighbor back because of caller ID apologizing and offered to have my neighbor in the studio. My neighbor still wanted to push the prank so he hired a sky writing air plane to fly over the studio and the plane wrote in the sky PHIL HENDRIE IS ON CRACK all day long. I don't know if Phil ever found out about it. My neighbor recorded the plane and has the footage. Anyway, my neighbor whom I haven't seen in years since I moved, actually created a show moment just like Phil, except it never aired and no one really knew about it because Phil never discussed the complain on air.
