Love Ricky’s stories of real life…. @1:20:00 ish he reminded me of something that happened in front of me many years ago. I was in a que to board a train in Chester. There was a couple in front of me who looked somewhat disheveled, the guy stepped into the train first his partner then followed but then tripped and fell onto all fours, I went to help but suddenly had to stop and stand back as the woman proceeded to empty the entire contents of her bladder onto the floor of the train. Once finished her partner helped her up and they continued into the carriage. Taking a long singular stride I stepped over the large pool of piss and eventually found a seat. Added note - the woman was wearing a dress/skirt.

@janderson27097 жыл бұрын
I personally disagree. 'Fucking awful' is a weird thing to say about many of those things. Life's too short for example had many many funny bits in it but didn't flow as well as the previous shows. Derek was a good emotive drama series. Special correspondents was pretty terrible - apparently they ran out of filming time for that and it was rushed. Science stand up had some good bits. You missed Humanity and his globe performances off the great stuff, also! Invention of lying is a great premise and the film isn't terrible but overall lacks a bit of substance. Finally, Ghost Town is sweet. It doesn't have a high rewatchability but I can't agree that it's 'fucking terrible'

That's neat, that George Bernard Shaw quote at 47:45, "People don't stop playing 'cause they grow old, they grow old 'cause they stop playing." Even when misremembered, the rearrangement offers insight in the mistake: "People don't grow old 'cause they play, they play 'cause they don't grow old." In emphasizing the cause of the lack even, rather than the lack's result when dropping the "old," something even more useful, pertinent to our times, appears: "People don't stop growing 'cause they stop playing, they stop playing 'cause they stop growing." Distilled further: "People don't grow 'cause they stop playing, they stop playing 'cause they don't grow." Quite a guy, this Bernard Shaw, offering insight 70 years ahead of when it'd be most needed; many of his quotes apply directly to the restrictive culture we're dealing with now: "The power of accurate observation... is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it." "The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place." "Write your Sad times in Sand. Write your Good times in Stone." "Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance." Other favorites, critical of today's irrational, monolithic, self-absorbed, puritanical liberal thinking: "Both optimists and pessimists contribute to society. The optimist invents the aeroplane, the pessimist the parachute." "The unconscious self is the real genius. Your breathing goes wrong the moment your conscious self meddles with it." "If you cannot get rid of a family skeleton, you may as well make it dance." "A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can depend on the support of Paul." "Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself." Even more illuminating: "This is the true joy in life: Being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one, being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy..." In an age where corruption and insustainability dominate our lives, our methods are oriented in a conceit repellent to progress or its possibility, an attitude expressly unfit and unhelpful in producing amicable change. Have never seen such prescience before, so many things that can help us understand and negotiate our present circumstances. Many more speak to the present straits facing our conservatives right now: "The moment we want to believe something, we suddenly see all the arguments for it, and become blind to the arguments against it." (That one applies as much to most of our liberal thinking these days, too, though.) A rarer gift, like that of Mark Twain's humorous social commentary: "No diet will remove all the fat from your body because the brain is entirely fat. Without a brain, you might look good, but all you could do is run for public office." This nugget of Bernard Shaw's perhaps illustrates best what it is I'm trying to say about the present orientation of the liberal approach: "A Native American elder once described his own inner struggles in this manner: Inside of me there are two dogs. One of the dogs is mean and evil. The other dog is good. The mean dog fights the good dog all the time. When asked which dogs wins, he reflected for a moment and replied, The one I feed the most." We're presently too rigid in our general thinking, psychologically, culturally and politically, simply taking ourselves too seriously to be effective in anything we pursue. Growth cannot occur unless it comes from a rational and consensual place, and neither rationality nor consent can occur without a little humility-- the freedom to play and make mistakes, be forgiven them to make more, that we then can learn: tolerance. Prohibiting these last things, we end up with resentment, pessimism, resistance, irrationality, neuropathy, the need to be perfect, denial strategies, strategies of aggression, anti-pluralism and progress' miserable, 4-ton cousin: stagnation. Play, forgive, grow, repeat; that's the formula we've stopped using. End of tangential skyscraper of optimisms, of my insufferable musing. Can't believe you took the time to read all this, so thanks. Perhaps a necessary change in how we treat one another will result if the irrational take the time to look at Shaw's work, too; seems it would be very palatable and effective in that regard. 'Til the next pony ride, Cheers.

Ricky Gervais completely whitewashed Stephen Merchant out of the Limo/Cheetos anecdote. It was Steve, not Jane, that wiped the dust off of Ricky's suit on the way to the Golden Globes. I know because I've listened to their XFM Show hundreds of times for years. I don't like to guess on their relationship nowadays, because it's not my business. But there is a very clear pattern when it comes to Ricky completely not acknowledging Steve when asked about their collaborative history. It was only after the fact that I realized Ricky engineered situations in which he appeared to be on the same level as great comedians. Talking Funny was the most obvious, but the sit-downs with Larry David, Garry Shandling and Christopher Guest were also a kind of artificial elevation to a place he doesn't really inhabit naturally on his own. By the time he and Steve Merchant parted ways (the truth of which is only apparent in Ricky's career revisionism, a canny bit of work that effectively paints Ricky as the sole creator of The Office and Extras), it was apparent that Ricky's abilities on his own were no more than the sum of their parts. And oddly, he seems to admit that his stand up is didactic, something that only works in the hands of a master.

I think that Ricky and Steve fell out when Steve went off to do the Hello Ladies TV show. I think that Steve must have told Ricky that he shouldn't be involved because the show is about a single guy whose rubbish with women. Ricky hasn't had those experiences because he has been with his girlfriend Jane for years. I think then Ricky got Steve back by doing David Brent: Life in the Road without Steve. Ricky occasionally mentions Karl in some of his recent interviews, there's one interview where he is asked directly about Steve and he makes a joke and uses up time so they have to move on to another question (I think it was Rick at Oxford university QandA) It's a shame if this they have fallen out. Maybe it's to do with them having worked together for years and they just want to spend some time apart? Ps: Pleas subscribe to my channel. Cheers.

Do you understand how utterly childish it is to believe in conspiracy theories? That this whole unknown world that only a few people "in the know" get to know about is utter horseshit designed to part you from your money? Because assholes like to make money off of people like you. They get advertisement revenue and book deals and touring revenue because the easily led will gladly hand over their cash to be brainwashed by people spouting nonsense. Brad Paisley is a freemason, so lets hear about how demonic he is. Oh, and the entire Mormon religion is based on Freemasonry. But I'm guessing you don't have a problem with them. Let's ignore the fact that an entire religion is based on fucking children. Anything their supposed prophet could get his dick into, at least. The same sort of stupidity that leads people to drink cold caffeine but not hot, think they're going to be the God of their own planet when they die, and get to have a bunch of boring broads as their eternal wives is the same sort of stupidity that leads people into believing in half-lizards and the illuminati. God is ashamed of all of you. He told me personally.
