5:41 is not a flop they're just trying out new things because if focus only on their theme because they might have a lack if if they only do that theme 'unlike the other kpop groups' that afraid to not do the common kpop genre I gave STAYC, High Up, and Rado pd-nim a BIG SALUTE AND RESPECT for taking up that risk that every kpop group and ent. afraid to do.

With the boyz as well, the group has been pretty mismanaged with them being constantly overworked and members Eric and Sunwoo leaving temporarily due to mental health concerns. Not only did their company give them songs that were mixed reception wise, but they also worked them to the bone

increase in physical sales doesn't say anything about a group's popularity. the best example i can give is weeekly. their album of ven para is their best sold album, but we all know how that comeback went... usually if a group has a really good comeback (like after school) their next album will most likely have more sales because a lot of people were introduced to the group by that comeback and are now expecting a similar comeback so they pre-order the album or just buy it before they heard the songs in it.
@villain__9

@onceortwiceooh

I agree. I think newer or less informed fans see the increase and think it’s because of that comeback but it’s not that simple. Kpop fans preorder not knowing what the new song will sound like but they’re also buying since they loved the previous comeback and want to support a group that is expected to make them happy again. So a lot of increases in sales is based on what they put out previously though there are expectations. Weeekly I suspect will see an album sale drop next time since ven para did so bad.

i feel like each year it gets harder and harder for kpop groups to stay relevant and interesting. the vibes are just so different from how they were in the past and a lot of groups feel almost directionless. itzy flopping is so strange to me because in 2019 they were the blue print and inspired a whole new sound in kpop and they lost that? i can't tell if I'm getting out of kpop or that kpop music has just become more stagnant because its been hard to even stay in love with my favorite group's music anymore. i just kinda miss the fun vibes of kpop

I know right. I started K-pop only around 2018-19 but the way the entire industry is moving along with fans, I feel something huge is missing. Where's the part when we were suppose to enjoy the music, friendly interaction with our faves and interaction of their faves with other groups instead of counting which group is selling the best, who fell out and who is behind the trend? Also, stanning or quickly unstanning a group for one or two songs, praising groups for a year like queens and then moving on to someone new and call them queens again? What's happening? 😭

nahhhh i disagree. their album sales are pretty strong for a gg not from a big company. i think the main thing is just they’re not doing as well as many anticipated after gp999’s massive success. but compared to the groups in this list that debuted a couple years ago (obviously g friend for viviz even though they debuted this year) and had successful hits in the past (eg itzys first tracks will never be lived up to then stayc too) i don’t thjnk it would be fair to say kepler as a rookie group is flopping in the same way. they just don’t have as much initial domestic success. as someone else said, they’re popular in japan, and also internationally will have even more loyal fans once they’re managed a bit better

Poppy caught me off guard, I'm a huge fan of that nostalgic 00s Eurobeat sound, beautiful Monster wasn't an immediate first love but I keep playing it non stop in my head! this year have been a hard one for the boyz and the members have themselves stated how hard it was for them. while i can understand people/casual stans not liking their last 3 korean comebacks because i actually feel the same too as a deobi i think most of the blame goes to the company. from not being able to protect their artist ( which caused one of the members to go into hiatus for almost a year ) they started on the wrong foot this year , repeatedly overworking the members, no proper promotions for their comeback, they didn't have a comeback showcase, they never released a dance practice video for whisper, the members had to write their songs in their hotel rooms during tours, also the comeback was super rushed because apparently the members knew only the chorus of the dance when the mv was released and also the comeback posters had lots of grammatical errors which speaks a lot about how the company thought it would be a quick money making scheme for them .and this is just a brief of how the company themselves keep sabotaging tbz's success. there are multiple accounts where the company looks like they aren't even trying at this point. also the timing for the comeback because music shows were cancelled throughout that week because of heavy rains in Korea. this also lead to decrease in their first day sales because kdeobis weren't able to buy the albums in-store bc of the rain. so this year as a whole was really just unfortunate for the boyz.

For me, beautiful monster is such a bop, everything about it was amazing. Firstly the song itself rocks, no empty chorus, the verses are heavenly, the aesthetic of the comeback is somewhat soft but nostalgic, the outfits are awesome, there's no such thing as a certain theme a group should stick to, experimenting with concepts and genres is what any group should do, if not the group would start producing boring songs that have the same melodies and are the same theme, it will be called recycling not producing, and stayc wants to avoid that, so they tweaked the song a little, it wasn't a drastic change of concept, it's still very cute and poppy, just a little more dependent on vocals and small instrumental additions, still keeping the electronic and poppy sounds of their songs, I think that beautiful monster is one of stayc's better songs in their discography as it has a different charm to it, and that's the beauty behind stayc in general, they explore new sounds and genres every comeback while not straying away from their general concept.

Itzy's "Cheshire" is sooo good! It's their moment to gain their fandom back! Same goes with Twice, many people did hate Scientist for being boring, but since Talk that talk came out it became my fav song from their discography. I think JYP needs to fire someone responsible for song's choice (probably himself LOL) for making it looking like sinusoid more than linear growth in popularity.

JYP the person is actually not that involved in the company's decisions anymore, I think. Also, for as corny as I find the man to be, he HAS proven that he's got a good hunch for hit songs, as he's produced many during his career. I think Itzy, like Twice and other Jyp-groups, have kind of separate teams - so, like, Twice songs and Itzy songs aren't curated by the same people, usually. I remember JYP talking about this system of theirs at a shareholder presentation a few years ago. Edit: forgot to add that in the end, I still agree with you overall: Itzy's team seriously needs to change direction, or rather focus on one creative direction and produce a coherent discography.

There is a lot of difference between Scientist and Sneakers. Scientist from the concept photos showed all the costumes and what concept TWICE was going to use. In that era there was a lot of speculation that it was going to be a slow song and it was. The song was not liked because it was cute and not mature. the song was not that good. Besides that Nayeon had said that the song was more relaxed and not explosive like The Feels. They sold you on the concept that it was just that the song wasn't good. With Sneakers they did clipbait. They showed concept photos that had nothing to do with the cb. That mature, royalty and elegant concept was not there. The fandom despite the deception since he was selling them something else gave him the opportunity. When Sneakers came out it got worse because the song wasn't good. Itzy had come with Loco a great song and Mafia uff. This created the worst thing that can be created for a "Trust Issues" fandom and many left and stopped supporting. TWICE Jihyo on TTT had said that the costumes were already all in the teasers and one was missing. The only problem with TTT was the lack of promotion. The TWICE girls put on their boots and took it upon themselves to know how to handle the fandom. The fandom with Scientist did not go away. They just didn't like it and that's it. They only stressed that the B-sides were better. And it is that FOL has coherence songs with different rhythms but they all have something in common they end up talking about love. The album talks about love for wso is called Fornula of Love and they fit well with the concepts also showing a maturity that was wanted for Scientist. Checkmate is a disaster. Sneakers a song that talks about shoes. Racer a racing song. What I want, Free Fallen and 365 have nothing to do with the concept of chess or elegance or royalty. Domino is the only one whose existence makes sense, so it is a song that sounds like princesses. It doesn't make sense with anything and there are songs that don't match the album. It's going to be hard to win back fandom for Itzy. TWICE did not lose fandom on the contrary they got bigger despite not having a good TT

Yet yo Cole showed how they lose fandom because of people who wasn't intereted in them. They still doing good BTS but the fandom that was with them in their debut or previous era is not there anymore only toxics fans. Yes, when BTS accept the error of making English releases the fandom that they lose they go back. Not all but hey they gained them again. stayc reminds me of when red velvet came out with bad boy back in 2018, i had been stanning since icc, so it was noticeable with the new wave of fans. so many groups were copying and being inspired by the outfits in the bad boy mv as well, the black and white checkered outfits were everywhere on nugu ggs. when they came out with power up, they lost so many “fans” and had so many complaints. the one thing about red velvet is that they NEVER do the same concept again, so ofc those bandwagon fans didn’t know. when rbb was announced they still believed it would be like bad boy, which it wasn’t and was also heavily criticized. rbb was definitely ahead of its time and i’m proud to have been a reveluv throughout it all, rv never miss!!! beautiful monster is rlly good, the song, concept. kpop stans irritate me bro😭i’m grateful for stayc honestly, they brought something new to the game, their mv concepts their outfits their hairstyles, and the music is so good too. that’s all u rlly need to be a successful group, good music and something fresh and new. that’s one of the main reasons newjeans is so popular and creating trends, or making them more popular. my top artist are txt, le sserafim, stayc, newjeans, rv, and a couple honorable mentions, ive and enha, tho i do still listen to other groups. not to mention the chemistry between the members is VERY important

Bandwagon fans are one of my biggest gripes with Kpop. For one, they are way more prevalent with girl groups, who need to keep up the momentum each comeback, while boy groups tend to have the more solid fan bases who will stick around through less successful comebacks. Plus they never actually know what they want from a group. Red Velvet got a new sound, eww, go back. Momoland comebacks all sound the same, ugh, no variety. For a girl group to have a solid fan base, I feel like the public wants them to not just be idols, they need to diversify more. Blackpink have a solid base but produce almost no music. Girls Generation has each member keeping relevant to the Korean general public and bring in interest despite the long hiatus. Apink and Twice are the only exemptions I find to this as they have been largely group focused, but they too can’t bring the huge results of before. Not to mention that even I have trouble stanning girl groups because I just conclude that they won’t be around for long so why bother?! Girl groups have it rough.

it’s so weird when people say stayc fell off because they’ve only had one comeback that didn’t do well, beautiful monster. and that still got a couple wins if i’m not mistaken & was at least top 100 on melon. the thing is, before that they released run2u which may not be everyone’s cup of tea but it charted so well, top 5 on all charts i think. their producers try to give them different sounds while still keeping them very stayc. i don’t mind not enjoying all their songs because it’s very admirable being a group that tries to grow. as for people unstaning them, it’s partly the ones who got bored and decided to pay attention to newer groups (till they get bored of them too). it’s a very shallow way of being a fan, just waiting for the next “toy” to show up. and the ones who just don’t vibe with their music anymore, that’s just valid because music is like that.

What is really sad with ITZY is that they didn't just have a bad year...they had probably one of the worst years of a pop group ever. K-pop groups rely A LOT on casual listeners because unless you are BTS or BLACKPINK, you don't have enough die-hard fans to keep you afloat even when you flop. Usually once a kpop group has a bad title track you can see in their views for the next comeback, they plummet. We could see this for TWICE after Scientist their views dropped a lot. ITZY didn't have just one bad comeback this year, they had 4 bad or mediocre comebacks. They lost a HUGE amount of their fanbase and the girls and JYP will need to do SO MUCH work to gain back those casual listeners.

I honestly think The Boyz are more easily put in a dangerous position in terms of popularity then big 4 boygroups or boygroups that are more visible internationally. It's undeniable that The Boyz were less talked about internationally but kept their pretty large and reliable korean fanbase this year. I just genuinely think that some other groups can do worst in terms of music then what they did previously and still continue to rise. And it's just sad to see how it goes for groups that relies more on a Korean fanbase or the gp. I also tend to not really like their japanese tts, I think they should have kept STB 100% rnb, sweet is a bop, and for a deobi like me that was here since debut, I was very pleased with whisper, I think in 2021 they just got a bunch of fans liking different stuff and not really knowing what The Boyz sounds like and those fans easily got deceived. Also, I wish you talked about how they were mismanaged, a big reason they kept going viral was because of "haus of a team" and their stylists, both creating crazy visuals, and they got rid of them after the merge. The budget seems to have been passed down to the new ist group, very much promoted as tbz juniors despite not being from Creker. No comeback showcase, no dance practice, very few music shows, them attending nugu festivals everyday to bring back money that won't be used for them. No Eric for 10 months and kpop channel news only mentioned it, leaving out the reason why... then Sunwoo going on hiatus too and nobody think there's a big issue. They also prepared the comeback while on their world tour... It was a bad year with the exception of them meeting so much fans. And I don't think anything can make me sad at this moment, we got a 2 day fancon with all the members and it was filled to the brim like every of their seoul concerts and it was fun, 2022 was a bad year for so many reasons but 2023 doesn't have to be bad if IST gets a grip (that's the scary part) ps= they also had to comeback at the end of 2022 but pushed it back and I'm actually happy about that, I'd like for them to prepare perfectly for it.

It's normal, I mean, groups aren't going to last forever, and The Boyz is close to disbanding, plus military service, so they're going to invest everything in junior groups to keep them going when The Boyz disband, it's happened before with other senior groups from other companies, so it doesn't surprise me, but it really saddens me that they get dirty like this, the lack of support from the company is noticeable, their goal is not to make them grow more, it is to earn as much money as possible before they the dissolution, so they don't care as much about quality as in previous years, I will still accompany them until the end, but it is very sad, I would like that at least my last memories with them were how I met them, but I don't know if it will be possible at this point, I still hope the best for the boys.

This year was not-so-good for Kpop music wise. Maybe because of market saturation and competitiveness, many groups are getting more comebacks to stay relevant and maintain the public's interest and this creates a quantity over quality situation. It's nice to get more music and activity from our favorite groups and singers, but they deserve more rest. Also there's so much pressure to break records with EVERY SINGLE new release which is so stressful and not really necessary for the fans and groups themselves, but necessary for the company and investors. Unfortunately in this industry you have to fight for recognition.

Beautiful Monster is my favourite StayC song, but then again I wasn't really into their songs before so I guess it'd make sense that people who liked those songs wouldn't necessarily like this one. In general StayC and Itzy being here reminded me again of how quickly people seem to be cycling through girlgroups, always hyping the shiny new thing before quickly dropping them for the next, even shiner one.

This year has been so strong on the rookie department, especially GG. The focus has been shifted significantly compared to previous years, and I think that is why it felt like a lot of popular groups become less relevent today. I would argue itzy, stayc and even everglow would have been some of the strongest 4th gen gg if you asked me last year, but I don't know if that's true or not anymore. I honestly would even argue NCT, the boyz and ateez have lost their moments slightly this year. Nothing significant but the trend is obvious. I kind of get why people start to talk about 5th gen, since it honestly feel like a trainsition periods this year ...

ITZY’s case is really sad because I honestly loved their music evolution. From their self love concept to Mafia In The Morning, loved the Crazy in Love album too. But unfortunately this year wasn’t for them. The best release for me this year was Weapon and it wasn’t even an official music video single 😭 I did like Cheshire but unfortunately besides the win it got it isn’t hyped up. Feels like JYPE is trying to please the fans which is ruining them. Want more international promotion? Here’s Boys Like You. Want a cute song? Sneakers is here. Want more vocals? Cheshire. I wish they would focus more on what the fan base itself wants. Not listen to the outside noise

But I agree with your assessment of other groups. I was sad about ITZY this year; I really enjoyed Voltage, and I actually didn’t mind Sneakers - I didn’t replay it much but the rest of the mini album was actually quite solid. But I LOVED early ITZY, and pretty much everything since Mafia hasn’t been it for me. I do love Cheshire though, and the other two songs on the mini album that aren’t Boys Like You.

as for tbz, i believe that the multiple smear posts against them during covid gate (starting from eric and his hiatus) really hurt them. there were talks of a boycott happening during whisper era too and deobis were mostly unsatisfied with the roll out because it wasn't their usual creative director hausofteam. tbf though, be aware sold 600k+ copies similar to both thrill ride and maverick.

i def disagree w both stayc and viviz viviz - i agree they peaked at debut... but for good reason. your argument about rumpumpum and loveade being better produced is FAR from accurate. their biggest critiques for both songs were how weak the production was and how their vocals aren't blended well with the track. bop bop's only drawback is it being a retro concept... the production, the vocals, the sample usage, the choreo ALL. ATE. (biased of course) but to say that bop bop has "weaker production" than loveade...is probably the least valid thing you've EVER said channel-wide. stayc - kpop stans... are weird. they think they're entitled to like every song their fave makes which is so delusional. stayc's company are probably the smartest in all of kpop and know the current viral and production trends. run2u and so bad's retro trend, run2u and asap's quirky trend, and stereotype and beautiful monster's serenity trend which ressemble that of taylor swift (swifties = horsegirl music) i think they were anticipating taylor's new album and the trend she'd make. stayc's japanese debut with poppy was absolutely genius with their fusion of kpop and the jpoppy-sounding chorus was phonominal (also biased) some can call it basic or too poppy, but can't call it bad. all in all... stayc isn't flopping- they're minds are just UGH ahead of the times

I hate the word FLOP but totally understand why VIVIZ didn't get as big as they should be. GFRIEND was so deeply loved by many because of their strong concept and signature sound. In order to disassociate fans from that, VIVIZ should have their own uniqueness yet they were struggling to get that. Adding to the fact that there are no new member VIVIZ. It will be harder for people to stop comparing with their former group.

The itzy and StayC flops break my heart because they’re like the prime example of ppl expecting so much from a group and dropping them the second they don’t live up to their expectations. You could say that for every group but not every group gets the amount of hate they’re getting with them being called untalented, cringe, corny, flops, and so much worse shit. I honestly blame their companies for switching their concepts out of nowhere and blindsiding their fans. (This one applies more to MIDZY than “swith” because most “swith” left due to them no longer being the new shiny toy and some of the loss in support of these kinds of ppl was inevitable for either groups. )

Even if people hated it, I still wouldn’t consider Sneakers a flop because it actually did better than LOCO in the charts both internationally and domestically. It’s only in streaming on spotify where the numbers are quite low. (50 million streams being low is kinda funny tho) And Cheshire is utter perfection. But it’s only been a few days, at least wait until they’ve promoted it at music shows this week before you declare it a chart flop lol. But also charts don’t mean anything, good songs sometimes don’t chart well! It’s all about marketing and promo, that’s how good songs become successful. As you said ITZY’s fandom is going strong and they’re selling more albums than ever so I don’t think they are flop status yet but their reputation has definitely been tainted by Sneakers! Less flop more plateau…
@ohnoits
@ohnoits Жыл бұрын
@Ronmaker I mean in international charts like Billboard, the CHECKMATE album ranked 8th and Crazy In Love ranked 11th I think. But yeah the streaming on Spotify is the thing that’s kinda low. You might be confusing international fans love for the song as chart success, but that’s not how it works strangely. How good or well loved a song is doesn’t always reflect on the charts because the charts depend on the music scene at the time and the season of the year. Sneakers was charting well for months! Now it’s starting to drop but that is normal. It still hasn’t fallen off Melon yet. Unless it’s Spring Day or something, most songs don’t stay on the charts for years. That doesn’t mean it charted badly, there’s too much music for every song to stay on the chart. The fact that it’s still on Melon now, 5 months after release, is more impressive than most groups can achieve. LOCO dropped out of the kcharts wayyyy quicker, and never even reached top 20 unlike Sneakers which was top 5 for many weeks.

with stayc i think they fell victim to the recent switching up trend happening in kpop rn. people fall in love with a newly debuted grp, stream their first comeback but the moment another 'big thing' girlgroup drops, they switch up on the older ones. stans were in love with the stayc in their first year as a group, but when they began their second year everyone switched up. with itzy is the same, they were doing great until aespa, stayc and maybe even weeekly debuted

i felt like stayc fell victim with the huge rookie gg competition this 2022. yeah fair, we need love is weaker compared to young luv and staydom but it's not horrible??? i dont get the hate these girls are getting just bc beautiful monster isnt their cup of tea. anyway, segue there but yeah- 2022 literally became the battle of the ggs where they compete which concept or sound is the most "innovative". and idk i think poppy is hella catchy and cute and i see it as their redemption song this yr. i think another reason why they lost momentum is bc they sonically branched out at the wrong time. if bm were to release before any of the 2022 ggs + ive debut, it wouldn't have that bad of an impact imo....

I disagree on a couple points. First, you use the term "flopped" but then describe as just not having as good a year as expected. The meaning of the word is a lot stronger: "(of a performer or show) be completely unsuccessful; fail totally." I'm not sure if some of these meet that full definition but my second point is that ITZY definitely does not do so. The reasons give to say they aren't doing as well are generally that they get a lot more negative (and less unchallenged positive) attention, but that isn't a good measure. They aren't a rookie group any more and over time the number of people available to be dissatisfied each time a release is different than the last grows. This is as inevitable as entropy. (in fact, it probably is a function of entropy). Looking at ITZY in multiple dimensions, several show strong success. Their world tour is the first time the performance-oriented group has been able to get out there for a couple years and by every standard it's a huge hit. They sell out everywhere, crowds are enthusiastic, and people have described it as THE best show of the year. Album sales are doubling, consistent with their contemporaries like Aespa and G-Idle. The numbers for Cheshire are too fresh and not easy to compare because of the unusual release timing. Album sales appear to be strong. YT numbers are hard to evaluate with the constant battle between Google and bots. I've been in the industry and know the feeling of telling a new client that they're favorite traffic numbers are going to be cut in half because we'll measure them more accurately. Anyway, this is intended to be discussion, I do enjoy your shows and usually learn a lot.

it sucks that itzy is here but it was inevitable. this year so many girl groups debuted and continued to release so many good songs. so when itzy released songs like sneakers and boys like you that people didn't like, ngl it made them look really bad. the kpop girl group scene became so competitive this year, it doesn't really leave any room for any girl group to release a bad song without having a massive drop in popularity. i think this is also partly why Chesire hasn't made as much noise as it should have even though it was a really good song :(

No surprised as Viviz not enogh support. Gfriend as a group didn't get the support from kpop fans either, everyone went complaining at their disbandement but were never there to support. Their peak was 2015 with Me gustas too and their recent album (even tho it had the bestest bop Mango) didn't sell enough and less that their prior albums. And as expected, every gg stans were there to complain to the disbandement but stop at that, they do nothing to support the member after that (except ofc the actual stans).

Their peak was in 2016 with rough and navillera being the top songs on that year the other cb may not be as successful as rough and navillera but it still doing good in chart and their last viral song is time for the moonight in 2018.. Although 2020 was rough since that's the start of the pandemic they still did good with 3 cb that year specifically Crossroad has 7 wins its the last cb close to Gfriend sound after that the song is very different. Gfriend don't have a big fandom (it's not that we are not supporting them we are just not big) we rely more on their music quality that the public will like but since they start changing their sound the songs they make didn't attract knetz they want Gfriend to appeal more internationally but as soon as they didn't meet the qualification they dword them. Also were more on kchart than album sales as Buddy's are not a big fandom. So if your expecting a 100k sales to consider The cb successful we didn't crack it since gfriend peak. 2020 cb's album sales are doing better but the chart since the acquisition is not doing good as before

I won't say tbz flopped.. they were just hella busy with the tour and knowing what happened with Eric and everything.. they didn't get time to show it fully. We all know very well they are extremely popular in Korea and their popularity isn't going anywhere atleast there. But internationally I'm sure they'll rise next year now that Eric is back. And the biggest reason of many things going downhill this year was their company.. after the merge, everything changed. Tbz didn't remain their top priority despite being the main money maker for that company.

Okay but The Boyz are still the most popular 4th Gen boy group by member and group reputation in Korea? I feel like you’re relying way too much on what international fans say on Twitter. You need to change how your getting this info, if their popular in their target market (Koreans) then it doesn’t matter what the non-Koreans say. The international community is obsessed with groups like p1harmony, who are remarkably unknown in Korea in a market of struggling young boy groups. What people say on Twitter needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

@@sarah2604sm if you wanna see how groups actually perform amongst media relevance in Korea, just look up “boy group brand reputation rankings”. It measures how talked about groups/members perform again eachother. They’re usually 4th-6th most talked about group OF ALL BOY GROUPS per month (on off months they’ll fall to around 7-8), and almost always have a solid number of members individually ranking in the top 100 (usual suspects are Hyunjae, Juyeon, New, Sunwoo, and Younghoon) which compares to all the big third Gen groups, and they generally lead 4th Gen every month.
