Personally, I think Aespa represents Y2K much better than they’re given credit for. Y2K had so much technological influence in media. Spy Kids, Totally Spies, Kim Possible, Winx Club, Code Lyoko, Cyber Chase, and all of DC’s properties (Justice League, Teen Titans, Young Justice) included futuristic aesthetics to match the rising integration of technology in our daily lives through the widespread usage of the internet. Y2K was more than just the mismatched fashion of “Spicy” and clean aesthetics of “Attention”. There was so much going on in the 2000s. I feel like so many KPop stans (especially those born in 2008 and later) really didn’t get to experience just how much was going on, in a similar fashion to how all decades have a plethora of observable aspects. So yeah, I think there’s way more to the Y2K concept that has yet to be explored and Aespa is the closest group to unlocking its potential! Also, give me a key-tar solo in one of their songs! “Less Talk More Rokk” was such an iconic song and fully encapsulates a lot of what made the alternative side of the decade great!

As a plus sized k-pop fan, I really appreciate how respectfully you handled the last opinion. Often times, due to the fact I'm bigger I feel like I'm an outsider in the k-pop community and it can be rough reading comments about idols bodies knowing they're still smaller than you despite the harrassment they are receiving for being "fat" (when they are just a normal weight) and it can feel very isolating but I handle this by just remembering that k-pop should be about the art and the music and I try to distance myself from the toxic side of everything because it can be so draining but it's important to remember not every stan feels the way the toxic stans do and the toxic stans are likely just projecting their own insecurities onto these idols.

The worst part for me is you don't even have to be pluz size to feel bad about yourself because the "beauty standard" is being severely underweight for K-pop idols. I think with sexualizing young women I think it's less age and more agency for me. Like a young woman in her 20s might genuinely like being sexy but I think it's important for it to be an image they've Cultivated for themselves. With kpop we know those young women aren't doing it on their own initiative it's something they've been told to do, been taught to do, to appeal to certain groups of people and that feels exploitative. especially since if someone debuts at 18 with a sexy concept... they've still been training for a few years before that, adults have still been explicitly been teaching a kid how to be sexual

Absolutely. Discernment is very difficult in these kind of situations. It works like grooming -- people who have been groomed have been sort of brainwashed into feeling comfortable with activity that would be considered inappropriate from more of an objective standpoint. This is why for example there is any such thing as age of consent. A young person can be persuaded to feel "comfortable" with something because it has been normalized to them, but that can at least temporarily nullify any premise of what that person may have been naturally inclined toward. Even with sufficiently of age celebrities, it's nigh on inescapable that a young person with a passion to become famous may become more malleable when told by casting, you know, you're good, but so are the other 10,000 people competing for this spot. Wink. And then, something that is otherwise objectionable may seem like a fair bargain when that proposition has been suggested. But there is no real consent when the choice is made under duress. There are some celebrities who seem to feel very at ease performing sexy concepts, but I can't know for sure that it isn't the act learned as part of the training. You know how idols learn to smile into the camera and seem to be flirting. Being a good performer is part of their job, so I don't reckon they have the option to put on bishface when they have cramps or are bored by the 2500th time performing the same choreo. They will have learned their job is to make us happy. All of that said I'm not really trying to argue that all entertainment should become ascetic. There are those who are just naturals on stage, and they are comfortable that way. It does seem like we hyperfocus on kpop idols age's and all of the concerns and caretaking af if this demographic is especially in need of saviors compared to anywhere else. So I'm not sure what the conclusion is, but there may be ways to improve the conditions even as it will fall short of perfection.

i completely agree, and i think that the idol's personality and vibe plays into it so much. like definitely with haneul she is still super young and has very much cute maknae vibes, which is why seeing her doing a sexy concept feels incredibly uncomfrotable to me, even though other artists of her age it feels really natural. i know that a lot of people, myself included, at 17, 18, 19 enjoyed being and feeling sexy, i just think it's different when that is being presented to the entire world. another one for me is kazuha. i think she was still a minor when she debuted (although not completely sure) so now seeing her dance to smart and being called sexy and mother just grosses me out, because i still percieve her as quite young.

6:38 "brains finish developing around age 25" is a factoid actually! Mental maturity is difficult to determine. Researchers have tried to do so by seeing when changes in the prefrontal cortex plateau, but it appears that brains continue to change throughout the entire lifespan so that's not quite it. So when does someone become a mature adult? Who knows! Everyone's brains develop differently! Some 8-year-olds have shown more mental maturity in studies than some 25-year-olds, and that doesn't mean that those 8-year-olds are miraculously adults. Most of the information here was pulled from the news article from Slate titled The Myth of the 25-Year-Old Brain.

#2 Drinking shows: I agree with the commenter, but for a different reason - I don’t think that the drinking culture in Korea is healthy. Drinking is a very important part of corporate culture. Not only is refusing to attend a post-work dinner considered rude, but so is refusing to drink. So even if an idol didn’t really want to drink, there is cultural pressure to do so, especially if somebody who is your senior is offering / pouring the drink. Those scenes of very drunk workers after a company dinner in kdramas are not exaggerated Even amongst family and friends, drinking alcohol is an important part of social interaction, and you could feel pressured to drink. When I visit my relatives in Korea, I just lie and say that I have an allergic reaction to alcohol (which was true when I was in high school) to avoid having to drink soju or makgeolli

I’m Irish and even though alcohol is not a part of corporate/workplace culture (unless you have a work Christmas party or something), it is a huge aspect of socialising here. If you don’t drink, you’ll be excluded from a lot of social situations. Of course you can drink alcohol free options but you will likely be asked what’s wrong with you. It’s not unheard of for teenagers to start drinking in dangerous situations (like in the middle of a random field at night w friends) from the age of 14 or sometimes younger. I personally don’t drink and have missed out on various situations because of it. That’s unhealthy af in my opinion.

Now to the conspiracy: that all kind of started when all the members became of age. Sure they also changed concepts but that trends started slightly earlier. For me, groups with grown women are those in their late twenties and onwards. In my opinion, kpop fans aren't ready to accept the idea of actual grown women debuting due to ageism and kpop distorting our perception of what age idols should achieve certain milestones in their career. I also think that this mindset could be attributed to the fact that so many people are having successful careers early into their life nowadays due to social media making it easier to succeed.

I feel so bad for everyone who gets to experience such behaviour and I'm not only talking about Kpop idols and stans, but everyone in general. The worst part about the fatphobia we see, is that it works, some idols don't get a choice if they don't wanna be on a diet and some can develop eating disorders after being scrutinized by the public for looking actually healthy. When it comes to Yeseo and Mashiro I'm not really worried, mostly because 143 has enough resources and connections to use Yeseo and Mashiro's existing popularity to propel Limelight further. And while Limelight aren't the main artists under 143 at the moment, they're about to become, because iKon are in their enlistment phase - so the company needs another money maker. I'm expecting much bigger promotions for their next comeback than what they got so far, debuting the group while Kep1er was active was the company trying to mitigate the popularity gap between Yeshiro and the other members (it's the popularity gap that killed the post-IOI groups that weren't Pristin).

My opinion btw is that there is a huge necessity of a TikTok, KZbin pages related to spreading positivity about female idols because the industry visibly mistreat them, the fans who are mostly girls discriminate them, sl*tshame them, talk and speak hate towards them. As a gg stan I feel awful seeing female idols being treated like nothing, being hated for everything that male idols are praised for. Especially, my biases like Jennie, Wonyoung, NingNing, Yuna, etc. are constantly objects of awful comments from GIRL STANS. As a community we need to protect all female idols because the harm is outrageous and we need no other victims after Sulli and Goo Hara

my issue with a lot of kpop performances is the choreo actually detracts from the ability for the idol to show their full talents. if they always dancing how the heck they going to sing every song have choreo for tiktok and so on. at what part are these younger idols required to sing if they can slap a prerecorded backing trakc and have a pretty person sit on camera for 2-3 mins lipsynching?

I know the "brains only fully mature at 25" thing gets repeated a lot everywhere, unfortunately it's not correct and just a science myth. The study that it goes back to looked at whether people's brains can change and found that they did in all of their participants - the oldest of which happened to be 25. So somehow 'brains still change at least up to age 25' became 'brains aren't fully developed until age 25' and finally turned into 'people don't mature until 25'. Since then there have been more studies with older participants, who also still showed placidity in their brain - so if anything, our brains never "fully mature" (whatever that even means) ;)
@Sherluck93
@Sherluck93 5 ай бұрын
Plasticity is not the same as maturation though. Your muscles also change with exercise, even though you have matured. Maturation doesn't mean that you grow out of development and stay like this forever, completely unchanged from then on.

I was the person who submitted the Y2K music I’m glad that you agree, just imagine all these crazy sounds that were used back then in current Kpop, it would be an awesome fever dream that seems too far away from reality🥲 I think some of Treausre’s B-sides definitely have a blend of that Y2K feel, but it’s not fully close. in terms of the debuting at freshly 18 i totally agree. imo, being 18 should still be considered young in a kpop group, and 20 or 21 should be the ideal age. at that point, you're more mentally developed, in your physical prime, and still relatable to a teen fanbase while appealing to older fans too. it's crazy to me that even now, as a 20 year old, there are some groups im not at all interested in, purely because they feel way too young. i hate that we're at the point where we're actually pleasantly suprised and pleased when a group debuts with an 18 year old maknae, like kiof. like haneul is still super young and i feel pretty uncomfortable with her performing sticky.

3:51 with the alcohol based opinion, i do kinda agree with this one a lot (don't get me wrong, its fun to see celebs interact with other but there are a ton of safety precautions at play too as all parties involved have the responsibility of the person drunk to ensure they don't fuck up or better yet cause themselves anymore harm than alerady introduced) for me, i was kinda shocked that drinking variety shows are as huge just because my assumption of korea was that they don't speak about alcohol and that being a bit of taboo, guess that doesn't quite apply to the night life/club life in seoul me guess So when i first saw this concept being played out, ofc i was kinda in a culture shock as i don't really talk about alcohol with anyone since for me that topic is quite taboo. I would say tho, if they plan to have more of these alcoholic shows, i would at least want them to have a safe driver that's not under the influence to come pick up the idols as it ensures the best possible safety for the idols involved. This topic is very nuanaced and complex so ill be happy to hear other opinions from yall regarding this 🩵🩵🩵

Alcohol is big in Korea. Have you ever heard about their company culture? They also like partying to relieve their stress. They have companies solely dedicated to drive drunk people home, in their own cars. Also, of course the guests don't drive home alone after filming. And they can also choose not to drink, then the host won't drink as well. Ordinary people in Korea don't get this choice. So, it's actually promoting the idea that it's okay to choose not to drink. Seems to me you don't know much about Korea. Alcohol is not taboo at all, but rather overused.

@@soralution Yes, absolutely! But it's getting better. I'll write more later if I remember and find the time. Remind me, if I forget. Just to add: Korea has quite an alcohol problem, since most other drugs are heavily criminalized. People are often 'forced' to join out of fear of losing their jobs, not getting promotions or just being kicked out of their friend groups and seeming 'uncool'. Also, many drink alone because they are depressed and mental help services are not readily available and struggling is seen as a burden to society. I quite appreciate these new shows since they promote drinking only to socialize (not alone), the ability to say no and choose another beverage, and explain the origin of the culture together with promoting traditional alcohol and respectful consumption. Some go overboard for the variety impact, but I think mostly it's good to get the topic to the surface and destigmatize it. They need to address this problem and if you can't talk about it, how can you deal with it and find a better way? Hope this helped! 😉

every group have main idol who become the main member who gain most fans its textbook blueprints and instead of having each member be invidual they look for identical individuals who resemble former idols and make them act similar to that on camera, they have to have a national bf or gf image to their fans cause hardly any of the clips i have seen seem normal its all to put a false hope that their fans can date these idols but the companies then use that one or two popular member and make them have certain image like why they doing with ateez san for exmple since he buffed up so much hes become basically sex symbol in ateez, yet with yeosang they didnt want him to buff up so they try to stop him from going to the gym so he could keep his prince innocent image. thats honestly so damaging to both their fans and the idols. personally id rather like a group for their songs not because they have one or two popular members that are oversexualised or overly hyped up for their faces and bodies. theyre basically objects instead of person, they tell fans on their vlive stop following them, stop calling and stalking them but it dont do nothing and i wouldnt be surprised if other buff idols like changbin who also get oversexualised if fake influencers tried to hook up with them or meet them at hotels and so on. its crazy and i bet they got some stories that they cannot tell either.

My unpopular opinions are primarily 3 and one can be seen as controversial but the other depends. I really and I mean really hate kiss of life and I’ll explain why. Bad news and shh were amazing tracks and I really liked them however I don’t like the releases this year at all. Midas touch I really really hate and I mean I think it sucks so much, instrumental is bad and then theirs the chorus which I hate. Then sticky I mean what the hell they just debuted and are now twerking. Bp, g idle and more didnt start twerking until a while in. Then as for the group as a whole they get 0 hate and I dislike that. G idle, Bp, babymonster, lsrf get hate and for some it’s very extreme but I do think that hate builds you as an artist. You become stronger and learn to overcome it, you know what people really hate. People really hated sheesh so was forever similar? No it was different and much more liked. Hate either strengthens you or breaks you down and KIOF has none. The day they mess up bad it’s over. Yg ent is the most hated company and it’s not a joke I’ll see polls about vocals, sp, rap, dance and more but when someone like it’s yg people go after that person. Even when it’s about choreo or songs people think yg is just blackpink and never check out treasure, akmu or ikon. The only thing yg can ever win by the and I’m calling out sm, JYP and hybe Stan’s is music videos and teasers. Yg ent makes the best music videos no debate Yg has always done things real and unlike JYP or SM they have only used one green screen in over 7 years. I was really hoping that supernova or drama would be actually filmed music vidoes, with paid sets and real props but once again it’s green/blue screens. I really wish companies would put actual effort in making music videos that are real thag fit the song. Only yg does that and that’s why they make the best mvs if JYP ditches those green/blue screens I’ll respect them for their mvs same for sm. Hybe eh I have little thoughts on them.

If I’m only ever gonna listen to the studio version, and it sounds good, why should I care if it sounds terrible live? Okay so here is mine... EXO raised my standards for k-pop way, WAY high to the point I don't think anyone will be able to top them at all. First off not only do all the members look pretty damn awesome, but their discography is simply unmatched in K-pop for me. It doesn't even come close how great their songs are and how are they able to pull them off like no one else does. The album designs are simple yet creative in how they incorporate the group's logo into various objects or symbols. They are incredibly fun to watch on the stage and can pull off any look- be it from military uniforms all the way to onesies. Oh and let's not forget about the vocals... Baekhyun, Chen and D.O. are without a doubt the best main vocal trio ever in K-pop. And oh god their lore is very fun to play around, make fanfictions and so on. It feels like they almost are real-life superheroes. This is a vibe I never have gotten from any group. EXO is simply perfect in every way in my opinion.

Hey! It is very bioessentialist to say “brains only stop developing at 25” Scientifically, it’s kinda incorrect, brains continue developing into your thirties. And it isn’t much different than people shifting the way they treat others as soon as they turn 18. People still have agency at 16, at 18, at 25, at 45, and the whole point of aging is that you learn and grow no matter how old you are. I think the mentality that you need some sort of marker of “maturity” or a turning point to start treating people differently is fueled by an ideal that people are more valuable at specific points in their lives, when they are at peak mental performance, physical capability, the smartest and strongest and “most attractive” they’ll ever be. I think we need to shift our mentalities more to consider that every person is always changing, learning, and growing, and capable of all of the above at any given time, no matter their age.
