I don't think people understand how big IU is in Korea. She's the only person that could make Koreans ranging from teens to elders go crazy . She also single handedly can compete with BTS on Korean charts. I once asked a few of my Korean friends and also my Korean teachers to pick between IU and BTS and they were super divided but lastly they went for IU. Literally couldn't stop mentioning, talking or praising her whenever K-pop is the topic 😂

I am 67 years old Korean. Before Seotaiji ,we listened Korean music and also all western music such as MJ, Beatles, Abba, ,Madona etc., so i think all kind of world music are saturated in nowadays' Kpop. Seotaiji's music came out, it wasn't same as those days' existing Kpop and also I felt it was different from Western music. So much sensational, I think Seotaiji gave inspirations to many musicians in Korea, catalysts to produce better music. It's just my opinion.

Seo Taiji is highly important to KPop. There is no KPop without him. BTS would not have existed. I hope you can react to Seo Taiji music one of these days. You could first try his "Feel The Soul" music video. And then maybe "Classroom Idea" with BTS from 2017 Time Traveler 25 concert. Anyway, will await your video tonight.

@@lizethqp2258 ... Yes, I've commented on Seo passing the virtual torch & mantle to BTS in other past comments around KZbin. One good reason for this is not just because of BTS' huge global popularity & financial successes, surpassing over all other KPop acts in the last 3 decades, but also injecting socio-political commentary in their songs, which Seo had also done during his time in the early 1990's & also even back during his songs around the time of Y2k, sometimes to the point of censorship not just for political commentary but also for their looks. Seo is also sometimes lightly poked fun of as being a "vampire", because he still kinda looks the same even after 30-35 years. :)

funny how Ailee wasn't even mentioned when she won all rookie of the year/new female artist awards on the year of her debut. Beating Psy's Gangnam style winning streak in MuBank in her rookie year(2012). Attended Grammy's a year after her debut (2013) and performed in the pre-grammy party. and let me add she's the only female soloist who won Best Vocal Performance award for 4 years in a row.

I was very far from the Kpop world before BTS blew up. The only Kpop i ever heard of was PSY and EXO. They were the only two names I would ever hear from news/ ppl in my college. I was into Kdramas and EXO would be mentioned at least once in any show I would watch and it was like everywhere. Cut to 5 yrs later in 2019 & BTS is everywhere. And I am wondering wow. This is insane. Another massive band? How many Kpop acts are there? What a weird thought now that I know exo & BTS are just 2 out of hundreds and hundreds. It’s shocking how big K-pop is once you start deep diving into it. And how many more artist/groups have been around. I live at the fringes of this world so I don’t know in detail about it, but mind blowing how saturated the Kpop market is with talent & hard work. And good music.

BIGBANG is literally the GODFATHER of Kpop, they invented and introduced so many things like : idols self-producing (this totally changed the bad perception that Koreans had of idols), 2 tone rappers (one low and one high), mini-albums, lightsticks (fans used banners or balloons before), colorful hairstyles (there were only brown, white and black at that time), USB album, they were the 1st who wore sponsored high named brands, all 5 members had successful solo careers and more. If you want to get into kpop, BIGBANG is a must or else you can’t consider yourself knowing kpop.

As a 43 years old Korean, below is the biggest name of K-pop idol that I think and the reason why: 1. Seotaiji: introduced hip-hop, hip-hop based dance and rap in early 1990's of Korea. YG was one of the members of Seotaiji group. 2. H.O.T: Most of K-pop idol culture was generated by H.O.T. ex) Large Group of boy or girl who all good at dance, huge fan base by crazy young children, idol training system and etc. SM became a major entertainment company by success of H.O.T. 3. BoA: the first K-pop artist who became a super star in foreign country (Japan) 4. Rain: the first K-pop artist who become a super star in general Asia (Japan, China, Hong-Kong, Taiwan and SE Asia). JYP became a big entertainment company by success of Rain. 5. TVXQ: SM's super success in global (but, disbanded early due to the dispute between the members and SM. if not disbanded that early, must have been super super global star.) 6. BIGBANG: Super global star, Start of YG's famous producer Teddy's success (but, they also caused sudden collapse of YG, because V.I., one of the BIGBANG's members, was related with drugs, sexual harrassment and other dirty stuffs and caused himself and people around him got into the jail) 7. 2NE1: Start of different syle of girl group (A.K.A girl crush) 8. Psy: Introduced K-pop to North America (before him, K-pop was popular mostly in Asian country) 9. Blackpink: Take K-pop to the level of entire world truly 10. BTS: Become regendary. No need to mention. Small company, BigHit(now, HIVE), came out of nowhere, suddenly became the biggest company in K-pop industry. I know there are many other big names such as EXO, SuperJunior, Kara, Shinee, Girls Generation, TWICE and etc,... but those are not compatible with the above in terms of influence into the K-pop history.

Seotaiji and boys was with that yg ceo before. But he passed the torch to bts and told them “it’s your generation now” he chose bts to remake his song and performed with bts during his 25th yr anniversary concert and not a group from his former group member yg ceo (idk his name sorry😅) anyway, Legends know who to support and seotaiji know he is correct with choosing bts. @@itsalyssahuang , lol you didn’t need to mention another group by name when it’s obvious what group you were referring to. You could have just said BTS were chosen by Seotaiji as their successor and leave it like that. By saying that Seotaiji choose BTS instead of the group that YG, an ex-member of his group, created it’s more than clear that it was a dig at BB. It was you implying that BB aren’t good enough for Seotaiji to name them as their successor. It’s common for armys to put BB down when it’s about BTS. “Legends know who to chose “ that’s what you said. That’s a clear dig. Don’t insult my intelligence by acting clueless. I really like how in depth it gets into the first 2 generations. I just wish it didn't skim over the 3rd so fast. Especially the Girl group trinity. Felt really rushed.

It actually missed a lot from the 1st gen. It is a 20 min video so it's missing a ton of relevant information from each gen(minus the BTS section).

Fun Fact) In Korea, k-pop idol industry has been their own league, even BTS. so, many people have not interested in idol music unlikely back in the day. EXCEPT BIGBANG. ++ I'm south korean.

Not trying to discredit Big Bang, but Super Junior was bigger in Korea as a 2nd gen boyband. Guess what's the result when you search for King of Hallyu Wave? It's #SuperJunior ! 1) SJ had more award nominations and wins vs BB, and 2) SJ had the most albums sold in Korea for years before EXO took over. 3) SJ was also big in China way before EXO, being the 4th foreigner in history to have their faces on China stamps. 4) Their song 'Sorry Sorry' was such a hit that every Korean knows how to dance that song, even Philippines inmates had a dance performance with 'Sorry Sorry' for visiting day! 5) And many more achievements but I'm not listing here since I doubt there'll be anyone reading anyway lol.... Yet this 20-min kpop history class only mentioned Super Junior and Sorry Sorry for 2 seconds and it's done?! Seriously?!

Yeah I know! but I mean, they're both kings in different generation. Of course Bigbang paved the way for 3rd Gen (very understandable) and Exo continues (as they should, they are the monster rookies, record breakers and kings in 3rd generation) and the other idols follow. By the way, we are so thankful and happy that you leave our fandom cause we don't need a fake/toxic one!...

Just for me to explain the generations better : 1st gen - 90s- to 2000s 2nd gen - 2000s to 2012/13 3rd gen - 2012/13 to 2017 4th gen - 2017 to 2022 Now is 5th gen - 2023 to present mot likely to 2026/27 Some groups that debuted around the beginning of gens are considered "building stones". For 4th gen I would say it started around the time THE BOYZ debuted. But calling them 3rd gen is ok. Some consider every group that debuted in 2017 still 3rd gen. Every group that debuted last year is already 5th gen. Not so sure on 2nd gen tho. But 3rd gen started with EXO. I personally love SM groups and the music SM makes but not the Entertainment itself. I recommend ALL SM groups and their music.
