Hi guys!
This is a different kind of video from me. It is a kpop centric video talking about the extreme globalization of Kpop and how I believe we are about to see it enter its newest form. And also how kpop has never been a genre but an elaborate marketing strategy.
Lemme know if you guys enjoy this kind of content and even listen to kpop! Much like my FS vides it is about explaining kpop in the simplest terms possible for people who might not otherwise know the history or kpop at all. No shade to any groups or companies just my observations and predictions. I am very excited about posting this video! Enjoy!

I loved this!! You have a way of making everything extremely entertaining while sharing a lot of information. I'm a bit into K-pop (BLACKPINK, Mamamoo and NewJeans mainly), but I learned so much about the labels in this video! Got a bit scared honestly tho... NewJeans really have "western radio hit appeal", their choruses have been stuck in my head all throughout this year. I think it benefits them in their western marketing that a few of them are Australian and thus can fully be themselves in English (just like BLACKPINK). I heard that you planned on making a Eurovision one too! I'm Swedish and have been an Eurovision enthusiast as long as I can remember. Looking forward to that video and feel free to ask if you are confused by something haha :)

I would love to see more kpop related videos. I liked, subscribed and turned on the notification bell!!!

The thing is that HYBE was not taking over SM. They were buying shares and there was misinformation regarding whether they were completely buying it. The difference between source music and pledis to SM is that Hybe bought the whole business and product, what they did to SM was more for profit. Also, people are not even understanding what monopolizing is and we need to be careful when talking about that.

Kpop will fizzle just like Jpop did. It always has a burst of stateside popularity when domestic pop music gets dark and depressing like the US/UK during the grunge era, and the way the US/UK have been for the last decade with what is essentially EDM grunge. (Lorde, Billie Eilish, Halsey, I'm looking directly at you.) But Jpop only had a niche fanbase stateside during the grunge era, and Kpop is already fizzling save for BlackPink. British pop music after 60 years, is still called Britt Pop and Kpop will still carry that moniker decades from now.

Honestly I don’t know, I always thought of kpop as the Korean counterpart to the Japanese manga industry. My personal bet is that it will slowly fizzled out but maintain a general/kind of mainstream appreciation with some big breakthrough here and there (think 5050, dance challenges, 2 or 3 hype groups a year). What do you think ?
@GetBenched2010
@GetBenched2010 9 ай бұрын
@@alaingiraud3104 Thing is, we've already seen this and even after a decade of Psy, and a few others, its still niche without any billboard chart success. America will get their musical mojo back eventually, but after that the international acts will fade again.
@irondragonmaiden

I don't know. Jpop became popular as a side-effect of manga and anime becoming popular (and anime/manga has become mainstream), since a lot of anime openings and endings are done by Jpop bands and artists (or VAs who are both). The Jpop industry never really had the idea of being internationally appreciated, it was a pleasant surprise if some of their acts became that mainstream outside of Japan. The Kpop industry specifically looked to capture an international market from the get-go. So I think this difference might make it more mainstream

kpop has reached its peak in terms of popularity. no group will surpass bts and blackpink level of success in the west. even with those two groups and their achievements, they still aren’t fully taken seriously by the american GP. kpop is oversaturated now as well

@@notthatkindofdino Jpop tried to break out in fits and starts. The one big attempt was Pink Lady between 1979-1980. Akina tried in the 80s and had lesser results. Then there was the double whammy of Puffy Ami-Yumi and Hikaru Utada's Easy Breezy being pushed heavily. It usually comes down to whether or not the label is owned by an American conglomerate or not.

I'm usually here for your fs stuff so I was super suprised to see a full on kpop video even though I know you're a fan of it as well. A very pleasant suprise though! I think that you're spot on with kpop changing from a genre of music to more of a packaging style/machine. I think it started really with BTS releasing full English songs like Dynamite, Butter, and Permission to Dance. Recently Hybe Japan also released &Team which is a Japanese group that is based and promoted in Japan, but I would say follows the Kpop style as opposed to Jpop. I would say that this phenomenon is already happening especially with the release of Fifty Fifty's Cupid which is in full english. I didn't even realize it was a kpop group until I had listened to it a couple of times since I had never heard of the group before. Unfortunately with the whole Fifty Fifty and Attrakt scandal, I doubt that they will be around much longer. I think Hybe will see the sucess of Cupid and either try to do something similar with NewJeans or even debut a new group. I wouldn't be suprised if they started a new sublabel under Hybe America to produce a kpop group based in the USA.

thank you so much for this excellent video! i just found your channel in June and binged all your videos in < 6 weeks! i used to follow FS in the ‘80s-‘90s but lost interest as an adult. i had no idea who anyone in contemporary FS was, but your videos were so entertaining and compelling, i’m now super invested! this K-pop documentary is fantastic! i’m a Japanese-American gen X-er and when i was a kid, East Asian culture was never “cool” or “trendy,” it was just weird (according to white people). so i grew up listening exclusively to Western artists and am completely ignorant to the Jpop/Kpop phenomenon. this is WILD. anyway, i enjoy your channel so much, Paola! thanks for all your amazing work! 💐

Very interesting and insightful video! As an artist myself I couldn’t help but feel bad for the performers throughout the whole video. It all seems like the companies are experimenting in all kinds of ways to bring out as many different products as possible only for one to really succeed. Just with the difference that the idols ARE the product and they have little to no say in their art. (Fyi I am very unfamiliar with kpop so I’m no expert). As a Beyoncé fan I was very intrigued that you mentioned how some western Stars are now pursuing more of those visual performance sides of their work because impressive visuals and intense choreo is what alwayssss was one of the many things that set Beyoncé apart from the rest! Although I might be biased haha! Also I want this Figure Skating Season to finallyyyyyy start!

frfr tbh as a long time fan, these people who praise the further expansion of kpop into the western market tend to be a lot more surface level in their understanding of kpop than they think. sure, you can name off dates, historical facts, company scandals whatever but theres more to it than that. kpop was always a global industry, but at the core of it was always and will always be a dedicated fanbase that is deeply connected to its intrinsic roots. we are already seeing an alienation of fandoms, the alienation of korean fans, sudden changes that these surface level fans don't even know about nor care to because its "in the past". but innovation needs to be done with not only good intent, but a fundamental understanding of what brought it to that point in the first place. its like live action remakes. if you dont stay close to the source material, no matter how good it is, no matter how many new fans you get, you lose a sense of identity and it breaks the delicate fragility of the foundation you started from. as another commenter said, kpop has pretty much already reached its peak. theres obviously a ceiling, you cant grow forever lmao especially in this racist world. kpop companies think so naively that they can just be accepted wherever they want to go. thats not how the world works and they know it. its the consumer that makes the product grow, not the shareholders. this is currently what is bringing disney into the dumpster, monopolization and generic consumerism, and its what will bring the downfall of kpop as well.

Honestly, I stopped paying attention to kpop after bts went to BMAs and the fandoms got toxic, so this video was really helpful in understanding what's going on right now in the kpopie world. The only criticism from me is the fact that you mention BTS as one of the first groups to start having success outside of Korea, I think it's important to mention that other groups like GOT7 (from jyp at the time) and EXO (from SM) already had a worldwide recognition at the time.

The amount of misinformation and little research in this video just to make Hybe the greatest villain is jarring that I stating/clarifying them one by one is pointless. Hybe entertainment? NewJeans 1st Hybe's GG? The erasure and undermining of Jpop influence at start? If you can't handle basic knowledge, how can you be trusted with more serious ones. -Pledis was financially struggling that's why BigHit bought them and provided some explanation so that butthurt people won't jump into things. -Vlive was offered/sold to Hybe. With the rise of other SNS live features and BTS (Vlive's user with the largest audience share) transferring to their in-house app, vlive was basically dying in business standpoint. -I won't even correct you with the SM fiasco coz it's a lot. 🤣🤣🤣 Girl the desperation.
