It did have a different scanner. The original one just went back and forth. The new one has two lights that go toward and away from the center, and the lit up segment is also much wider.

The creators of KR 2008 said that KITT has to give a sign that he's still "alive", so ot represents his "heart" and also because of the red light everyone calls him KITT!
