Justin flew his KR2S to KEDU to let us examine it. It was originally built by William Owens in Utah. Note that William built it with a BRS recovery parachute and a turbo Subaru engine. Justin bought it and refit it with a Continental O-200 and removed the parachute.
The Warp Drive propeller is pitched for high speed cruise - with static run-up making only 2200rpm. But it makes 2600 rpm by the end of the runway on takeoff, and climbs at better than 1,000 ft / min with the two of us and 7gallons of gas. He runs it pretty hot at over 3000 rpm - where its making better than 170mph IAS. However, the engine is running a bit hot and a bit of tweaking of cooling might help the hottest cylinders (437C!).
I was hoping to get in-flight performance recorded in the video, but off-axis viewing of the MGL was limited - sorry.
A beautiful and very well built airplane.

Nice to see a new video on the KR. I am rebuilding-reconditioning a KR2 that hasn't flown in 15 plus years. Airframe and paint is essentially done. New motormount...Great Plains 2100 will be installed...etc. Congratulations! Doran Central Lower Michigan

This KR has been flying for some time with a turbo-subaru. Justin had recently put an o-200 in it, and his skills in making Reno Racers was evident. Simple, clean and very nice installation that really performed - I was surprised how fast it was. Justin was selling the plane, and we were looking. My son is building a KR2S with a VW and I was a little concerned about the VW engine in his - and thinking this would get him flying years earlier. Hi Justin, I have for 4 years kr2s with rolls royce 0-200e engine and 68-inch warp-drive propeller (72 inches shortened). -take-of at 2050 rpm (on the ground) -cruise economic at 125 mph and 2100 rpm 18 liters gasoline per hour - maximum speed 170 mph at 2750 rpm incoming new French propeller brand E-PROP that on rotax from very good results with less difference of ground-air rpm. congratulations for your video Davide -ITALY

Awesome video. I am building/reconditioning a KR2S and am now working on the engine a Revmaster 2100D previously installed in a Quickie. Hope to have my bird flying by this coming Spring. Thank you for the video.

Update on my previous comment. I sold the KR 2. Did not fly it at all. I own a Wittman Tailwind with the same power plant package and prop you have on your airplane. Very nice setup. The KR2 stretch with a wider cockpit longer wings and longer fuselage is the only KR2 that makes any sense to me. I did turn off the volume because the music almost sounded like a funeral March or dedication but other than that I thought your video was very good.

What kind of TOLD are you getting? specifically with it being no flap, whats your approach speeds and how short of a strip can you confidently get it into? Also whats your empty weights and max weights? Awesome KR!

Sorry for the long delayed reply. You can notice in the video that the take off is well short of the mid-field turn off (which is ~1500' from runway end). I'm guessing TOLD about 900 ft? And this is certainly not being flown for maximum TOLD performance.

What's the legroom like in the KR2S?

Hi Bob, I'm a fairly short fellow at 5'10". I fit fine with leg room not an issue. I can wear a headset or helmet without too much trouble. However, its not leg room that's so much an issue, but rather shoulder room. With 2 aboard, the KR is very snug/cozy. Cheers, Owen

Greetings Andre! Not my KR2s. We are building one and this one was local and for sale - so we got a good look at it. The engine in this one was replace with a Continental O-200 by the owner (Justin). He's a mechanic for Reno Air racers. So - Why is this one so fast? The light and very small KR (originally designed and mostly flown with 65hp VW engines) really moves with a real 100hp. The compressions may have been boosted to get more than 100hp, and the installation was very clean with little to no cooling air waste (and really not enough cooling air if you notice the very high CHTs). Small aerodynamic clean-ups make significant improvements when starting with a low drag high performance airplane. Additionally, the prop (warp drive that is pretty efficient) was pitched for fast cruise. KR's are pretty fast little airplanes - with the VW powered ones often doing 130 to 140mph. Finally, notice that the 174mph airspeed was at 3011rpm and one of the cylinders was at 437C - so he's pushing it pretty hard.

Ok friend, I got it! I really was scared with so much speed 174 mph is enough !!! Here in Brazil generally the ones I know fly between 120 and 140mph, from VW to Jabiru engines !! I'm looking forward to riding a KR2 here with a VW engine! But thank you very much for the answer and clarifications !! I'll follow your son's project !! Thank you...
