Blake Angelos from Yamaha demonstrates the Montage music synthesizer at Kraft Music.
Yamaha Montage builds on the legacy of the DX and Motif synthesizers with sophisticated dynamic control, massive sound creation, and streamlined workflow. The Montage Motion Control Synthesis Engine and Motion Sequences offer unique ways of interacting with rhythm-based sound. Montage also provides 1.75GB of user flash memory to augment its internal AWM2 and FM-X sound engines. Seamless Sound Switching lets you change performances without any cut-off in envelope or effects. An A/D input is available for processing external audio sources through Montage's effects.
Montage is available in three configurations: Montage 6, with 61-key FSX semi-weighted synth action; Montage 7, with 76-key FSX action; and Montage 8, with 88-key weighted Balanced Hammer action with aftertouch.

Who needs sequencer edit when you have a computer DAW? For that matter, who needs a HW sampler when you can sample into Kontact and then move the saved sample to your workstation, nicely edited and looped? USB3 would be nice, but it's not like you're going to move Gbs of data over USB. None of these are serious flaws to me. The nice integration into Cubase is a much bigger plus.

I have the sound of this video running through my 15" near field speakers and it sounds incredible. I think most of the comments disagree with the marketing hype and maybe are listening through their PC speakers or low quality ones at least and then say it sounds lifeless and unimpressive. As an acoustical engineer I think what I'm hearing is amazing. A talented keyboardist will love this piece of gear as much as a Kronos or others if given a chance to play around with it for a week putting it through its paces. I'd love to play it if my hands were not arthritic!

It's ironic that this video begins by proclaiming "Welcome to the New Era of synthesis!" I sincerely hope there is no one out there reading this who took that statement at face value. The Montage is more like the last sulfuric belch of a volcano that henceforth won't erupt again for thousands of years. Music hardware is moving into a phase where gear is patterned after apps. That is, single-purpose, light-footprint (both physically and on your wallet) devices that specialize in one method of synthesis or one sound palette, and excel in offering a great, specific user interface to control those sounds. Anyone who has worked with both behemoth synths like the Montage and a collection of smaller, discrete units, knows that it's far more difficult to master (and remember) the controls of a generic, all-purpose interface like the Montage's vs. a bunch of specialized, limited devices. It's very much the same phenomenon as why it is so maddening to try to program a VCR (if you remember those) or do advanced functions on a microwave oven. Our brains just for whatever reason remember the abstract (instructions) better if we can associate it with a discrete physical device. I.e., no one ever looked at a mechanical wristwatch and said, "Crap, how do I wind it again???" I'm sure many will make great music with the Montage. To me it sounds slick, dated, and hopelessly out of touch with modern tastes (whether indie or pop), but I know there are talented people out there who will take those first impressions as a challenge to do something really interesting with it, and more power to you.

I actually dont understand all the negativity, this seems like a substantial upgrade from the Motif. Unlike most, I am NOT a fanboy of one brand or another, the 4 major competitors in the workstation space (Korg, Kurzweil, Roland, and Yamaha) each have their own advantages, and in my opinion, are designed for nearly completely different uses. Kurzweil for example is probably the best keyboard for creating your own sounds from scratch but requires a deep understanding of how sound works (and as such, many of the default sounds of the Kurzweil are not as good as Yamaha), while Yamaha is on the other side of the spectrum, their specialty is quality sounds built right into the keyboard but lacks some of the sound modification features of Kurzweil. Korg offers simplicity, not nearly as in depth as Kurzweil, but is MUCH simpler to learn and use (and in my opinion, the quality of some of the sounds are not very good). Since I havent actually used Roland, I cant speak to specifics. If you are looking for a keyboard that has very good sounds built right into the keyboard and are not interested in creating your own sounds to the nth degree, Yamaha is a good choice, kind of right down the middle. Also, in my opinion, Yamaha specializes in music creation, not sound creation. If you are looking to write music and want something to inspire you, Yamaha does just that and the motion keyboard takes that to a different level. Is the blinking power knob and the marketing a bit over the top? Yes. But it still is a fantastic keyboard, if writing music and most importantly, inspiration is important to you. In alot of ways, the Yamaha plays itself, something I cant say as much for others, this can be a good thing or a bad thing, again, depending on what you are looking for. The reality is, all of these keyboards are overpriced and I wish the music industry would get real for a second. 8 GB of storage and thats supposed to be incredible? A $4000 keyboard and they cant be bothered to put in more storage? My guess is that this keyboard will be expandable in storage and they will overcharge on memory, the motif memory expansion modules are currently $300 for 1 GB. Mind you, thats just one aspect of how overpriced these keyboards really are, and by the way, this isnt just limited to Yamaha, they are ALL overpriced for what they are, in many more aspects than just memory. A PC offers all the same customization these keyboards do (given you have the right software and the sound fonts), offers more computing power and flexibility, the only issue with using a PC is the UI isnt really usable while playing the keyboard. So, all of this to say this, lets stop with the fanboy nonsense, research the 4 major brands and decide what you are looking for, if you do buy this keyboard, turn off the blinky knob, and consider that all of these keyboards are overpriced, we are only buying them because we dont have any choices. These keyboards could be half the price and offer the same functionality (given the hardware in them).

I am a long time yamaha fan and customer. I'm excited about this new synth coming out. But I have to admit the excitement has simmered down these past days because Ive yet to see a video on youtube (or anywhere) where they're not showing THE SAME 4 or 5 new sounds. (the new cfx piano, seattle strings & about 3 new really cool synth sounds). COME ON YAMAHA show me something else PLEASE!!!!!

Incredible instrument sounds. Absolutely stunning acoustic grand piano with unbelievable sustain. The Yamaha pianos in the Montage sounds much better than the majority of acoustic pianos I have heard. The Rhodes piano variations are really accurate reproductions of a number of different Rhodes models that I have owned in my life. Whats more, no need to be concerned about bent or out of tune tines as in the original Rhodes mechanical pianos. That said, I have no use for all the Trance music or most of the so called performances that comes with the Montage. Those are of a different generation than mine. I thoroughly enjoyed Blake's playing. Its great to hear a demo by someone that can actually play music. As an owner of a Yamaha Motif ES8, I can honestly say I got more than my money's worth from that instrument. It has paid for itself several times over, and in the years I've owned it, it never gave me any trouble. I moved it around, played private parties and small club gigs for years and it never failed. I have a flight case for it and always handled it with great care. So, Yamaha instruments not only sound great, they are reliable.

+Hermes Mercury Hey I agree a plenty of possibillity and touch screen are definitely pros in comparation with my MOTIF XF ... BUT... I agree the sounds are stuck in the past! Even the ones that seem to be build it to sound to be capable of doing modern sounds. I love yamaha I have THE MOX AND THE MOTIF and would like to have the TYROS just because of the perfect sounds its capable to deliver. .(especially the natural ones) Well I dont think I will live that time personally but a TYROS MONTAGE would maaaaybe be a good combination. But I probably should be selling my house to buy it.

Yes... well, another great synth. *Long sip of coffee...* from a musician at heart, and his own small house studio experience, I can see where they went with this synth. No doubt this hoopla always prevails for a while with anything new, and no doubt this synth will be a great addition to any music studio, and specially for someone doing his live signature presentation. I have my own vision though, and hence this here two cents of mine: No sequencer. That, to me, automatically puts it in a category of a slave unit. As someone else here put it, for the price being asked, no amount of dsp for effects power, substantiates actual creative power they could have made this synth have with sequencer included. Mine as well just buy the rack mount unit, and save money. Which brings up question #2: This unit is capable of 32 effects (apparently) available at the same time... Then why did they still had to "sample" every frikin' piano key? ??? My Roland Fantom G has that, and the manual that came with it was printed in 2008. So either Yamaha is cheating with available resources on the synth power, by taking away sequencer and few other bells and whistles, and utilize that for effects and the knob (?...lol), or their R&D guys need less vacation time, and more schooling how to properly utilize today's dsp chips' power. Or... and this is here just to sound more complete, they still use the same dsp chips from their previous flag ship synth, and just tried to create something different with their existing hardware. Sorry for making this kind'a long, and if you guys read this, thank you for that! Face it, today's synthesizers are really kick-ass computers, capable of producing sounds we love to use, with their powerful chips, so from a musician's point of view, I will just have to wait a little longer, until something else (from somebody else) comes out, being a "complete" flag ship. A synth I can put up in front of me, with a sequencer recorder, and being able to control everything else in my cave. Blinking lights and flashing buttons are a bonus.
@punypoppy9147
@punypoppy9147 8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Kuciel Good post Daniel. I agree. I also feel it's pretty much always like this. Every synth manufacturer uses same dps chips and samples, invents only little new things and re-sells the older flag ships for years to come. Can anyone tell me any excuse in year 2016 why keyboard brasses sounds like they do compared to computer worlds samples? It's definitely not the memory, nor should it be the cost of HD space. One example is bit like kurzweils pc3 that was released in '08 and it had a huge amount of exactly same samples that were present in pc2 model released 8 years prior, only with better fx and virtual analog engine. I'm now using korg's kronos 2, and it's somewhat a big let down. Dynamic piano is non existent. Also you'd think it's a lot more powerful from all the commercials than it really is. Polyphony is a joke and sometimes it only takes 2!! programs to fill it up to point of note stealing etc and a lot of other issues. Also in this Montage demo, sure the sustain in the piano is awesome but it should had been demonstrated with a chords and chords changes holding a sustain pedal, because i suspect we're not getting the real "truth" about this "fantastically" long sustain being demonstrated. Oh well. :)

Korg has been doing this type of sound modeling for years! The Korg Karma did all of this stuff back in 2001. And NOW Yamaha wants to sell you on this (insert fancy adjective here) innovation? I'm not bashing as my first real synth was the Yamaha SY-77. I really like a lot of natural sounds in this video but it seems to me that they are really pushing the Karma style fx/bells & whistles and throwing a blue light on top. After considering all of its strengths and weaknesses, For $3999, I'll stick with my Kronos. Anyone else agree?

Can we stop comparing this to the KRONOS please? Different league. Different ball game. This keyboard simply sounds incredible and it looks like a lot of fun to play. I do think that Yamaha has completely missed the fact that EDM fanboys not only have no idea how to even play an instrument, they don't actually pay for instruments. They make their music with stolen samples and hacked copies of Komplete. One macro doesn't do much for me. Give me 8 super knobs, an 8 voice analog synth, FMx, AWM2, a sampler, and a drum machine with pads... I'm all in.

This video is not a review, as some idiots here are saying, this is an advertisement/demo by the manufacturer. Some of my observations about the Montage: 1) I'm really disappointed that Yamaha chose to not include a full-fledged sequencer nor user sampling! And still they put this in the same high-price category with the best of workstations like the Korg Kronos! WTF?? 2) AWM2 + FM(X)?? You mean the same sythesis technology and engines that were used in the SY77, 25 years ago, and ONLY those??? 3) No HDD/SSD?? 4) Add one more knob with a fancy light, call it a super knob (how incredibly cheesy) and make it a major feature??? 5) The "orchestral" voices still sound very artificial! Putting all the previous points together, it really seems to me that Yamaha is somehow stuck in their "golden years" 25 or more years ago, and cannot break free of their limited thinking. Sure they have thankfully advanced somewhat (like the colour touch screen and some other improvements) but this just seems to be by the general technological advance available anywhere, but still I'm most astonished that they still stick to artificial limitations like a fixed polyphony ceiling or the lack of a hard drive (or SSD). I would like to point to the Alesis Fusion from 2005 that had: 1) unlimited modulation matrix, so almost every parameter was a modulation source/target, so you could achieve e.g. this "super knob" with one of the four available knobs 2) a HDD, so you could save your voices/songs/combinations/multisamples freely with no onboard RAM/ROM numeric slot limits. 3) HDD audio recording with 8 simultaneous inputs 4) four synthesis engines including a freely routable 8-operator FM (no "algorithm" limits) 5) A very intuitive user interface despite the 240x128 monochrome LCD. Granted the Fusion had some annoyancies and limitations, and some unfortunate events caused it to be retired way WAY ahead of its time, but in my mind it achieved a freedom and flexibility in a workstation that is still almost unparallelled, ten years after. Korg's Kronos comes very close though. But Yamaha: WTF, are you seriously stuck in a time loop or something??

Do the words Yamaha and Montage really have to be so huge on the front panel. They can drop a hundred on the price to compensate for the advertising. Plus I have a Motif ES6 and am not really convinced the new piano for example sounds better, 2gb it maybe, but the one on the ES6 is also multi velocity layered and sounds very good, same with guitars and so on. Strings I use EWQL. Newer is not necessarily better.

I think the Montage is better to explore and is more versatile while the Kronos is better tuned. If you listen a factory demo of both sounds you'll choose the Kronos. But the Montage is the real beast after tuning!
@X22GJP
@X22GJP 4 жыл бұрын
Lordtunes World if you’re not going to answer the question, why bother except to belittle like you tried? I say tried because you don’t seem to know the difference between chose and choose. In response to Jerm though, I would say that for sonic immediacy, the Montage is a better choice. Make no mistake, the Kronos is a powerful beast and has lots of different synth engines, but that also brings with it lots of menu diving and I didn’t find the interface particularly intuitive. For the types of sound I want, and for general noodling and getting list in sounds, the Montage won me over more than the Kronos. Of course, your mileage may vary so yes, if you can get to try them both I would strongly recommend doing so.

A lot of dance presets, for one-finger play, like in arranger-type of keyboard. Oh, and let's have a look, in manual we see: "We took the bread-and-butter sounds of the MOTIF series used extensively by artists worldwide, and significantly enhanced them". No Yamaha, no... MrHollabk Your last question fit you sooo well. Twice the money for Kronos? Let's check. On Sweetwater Kronos 88 Platinium edition lists for 3700$. Montage 8 - 4000$. Kronos doesn't sound any better you said. Well, there's no point to discuss about taste, yours ot mine. For me, Kronos sounds at least same level in sonic quality in his own, different way (Korg sound vs Yamaha sound). Probably Kronos sounds even better. But it's not only about the sound. Korg is much, much better equipped, more features, synth engines, seq, sampler, SSD vector joystick. Geez, and Yamaha borrow some of Korg solutions. I used Motif ES extensively for many years, left it to the Kronos for obvious reasons. Montage can't change it, there's no sense of returning to Yamaha still.

Dynamite Kid I have no doubt, that in general there's still no better standalone keyboard workstation than Kronos. We can discuss about some personal preferences, but as a whole thing no one keyboard is as versatile, equal in all type of sounds, user-friendly and ready for future developement as Kronos. Last 5 years shown how good work Korg can do making Kronos' OS better and better, adding new important features, enhancing it's sonic possibilities, creating new sound banks, samples collections. Kronos is also opened for hardware improvements, so even if third generation of Kronos is on the market now, the first gen still can be easy and cheap upgraded to reach the same features.
