I´m from Iceland and my grandmother was born and raised in Hornstrandir. She was born there in 1922 and raised there with her 7 siblings and parents. Her aunt lived in the adjoining house with her husband and 13 children. All 21 children of both families were born in Hornstrandir, the oldest born in 1918 and the youngest 1945. The house where they lived was a 2-3 hour hike from the next house, and the closest village was a long boats trip away. They survived there by eating fish, birds and they kept a few sheep, and with the area being so far north they get 24 hour sunlight in the summer, and 24 hour darkness in the winter. The darkness was indescribable, walking out of the house you couldn´t see your own hands, even if you held them in front of your face. This darkness made the winters very difficult, and along with that there were snow storms and freezing cold temperatures. She had a couple of encounters with polar bears which had travelled on drift ice or swam from Greenland, the families were never injured but the polar bears would still come up close to the house and look through the windows for food. She moved to mainland Iceland with her cousin Jakobína (Jakobína Sigurðardóttir, known Icelandic author) at 16 to work and eventually met my grandfather. Her parents left Hornstrandir in the late 1940´s and were the last inhabitants in the area. The house has been dismantled but you can still find their old stove there in the grass 70 years later. My grandparents were happily married for 50+ years and she passed away in 2004, she was a wonderful loving grandmother with an incredible upbringing.

@@josephh394 Bring crampons/microspikes! I didn't bring any, and regretted it. There are lots of steep glacier areas where they will help a lot. Also, bring hiking poles, a GPS/satellite device, and plan out your route in advance. There is no cell phone reception in most of Hornstrandir. The weather is also very harsh and highly unpredictable. It rains, gets extremely foggy where you can't see a foot in front of you, and is typically very windy. Bring a tent that is windproof- a "tunnel style" tent. We had 40 MPH winds when I was there, and my tent held up, whereas others' tents fell apart. Bring all of the food that you will need and more, and make sure you know the locations of the emergency shelters in case something happens. Also, waterproof (Goretex) outer layers are very important. And, bring a small microfiber towel to wipe your feet/legs after the icy cold river crossings. Oh, and an empty water bottle. You can drink the water from streams/waterfalls. It was delicious! One more thing: get the pancakes at the Doctor's House. I started there on my trek. Enjoy! This was the most amazing hike I've ever done, but also the most difficult. It is mentally and physically challenging.

I live in the Caribs and there’s a part where me and my family go for vacation bcuz it’s really isolated and the people back there are mostly villagers but before we enter the actual village we see mansions filled with mostly old whites That say they were looking for someplace far with nature and the seas and wanted to get away from all the structures and cities where they came from. Me I find it kinda boring being surrounded by complete nature bcuz I’m already use to being in the city and going out and stuff but I guess it’s just the young age
