One joy Kraig doesn't mention on this guided hike are the drying rooms. You could come in with completely soaked clothes and boots, and everything would be dry and warm by morning. An amazing feeling.

In WW2 my father was a Marine in the south Pacific. They stationed his ship in New Zealand once briefly. He never talked about the war to us boys. But he told me that New Zealand was the best place he ever saw. He said it was insanely beautiful. We live in the UP of Michigan, born and raised here. There are three Great Lakes that grace our shores..Lake Superior shoreline is incredibly beautiful year round. I can drive there any time i want to a couple of hours away... I never got tired of the Great Lakes and will never leave this place. If you have not looked at it please do. Would be awesome to see a video from you on it. Mackinac Island is incredible but only accessible until the lake freezes.there are no cars allowed on the island, only bicycles and horse drawn carriages or horse riding. The Grand Hotel was built in 1887 it is indeed a walk into the past.

I’m a local and it’s also hard to book so I did it in the off season with unmanned huts, a bit cold but we made our own fire and quiet. I recommend taking the excursion to Southland falls after the MacKinnon pass if you have enough energy. Also this place gets over 6m of rainfall per year so rain is part of the game and makes it special get some nice gortex and merino base layers for Fiordland in general.

Top tip..... If you find yourself in Milford sound, always get a tour on one of the smaller boats there, they get a lot closer to the wildlife and waterfalls than the one Kraig was on :) Milford sound is defintely a must do, and is one of those places on this planet that actually looks more stunning in bad weather than it does in good, yes, I know that's hard to believe, but it's actually true.

Did this in March 2023, but in the DOC huts rather than the guided ones. Absolutely stunning scenery, it was my first time seeing a Kea and I cried because they are so beautiful 😅 my advice would be to swim at every opportunity and bring sandfly repellant. Also, I brought extra bread, cheese, and tomato soup packets and made grilled cheese sandwiches on the top of Mackinnon pass in the shelter which was the best thing we'd ever tasted after being out the in the cold rain for hours. Highly recommend

Ah, the memories. You really were lucky with the weather. So much sunshine in this corner of New Zealand. Nice to see how fancy those guided huts look, haha. Wonderfull video, brings back a lot of memories. :) As for tips: Suny weather is nice, but rain brings out waterfalls Sandlfies do bite, they bite quite a lot actually! It hurts and some people get a terrible reaction to it. If possible take the detour to Sutherland Falls. For experienced people/with good weather window, most bookable hikes can be done in May without booking, right after season finishes.

Thanks for the beautiful video! 🥰👏 This brought back so many memories. I did this solo in 2014, and it was fantastic, often called "the finest walk in the world." You're right that it's popular; as I recall, I got my permit way in advance, on the first day I could. I ended up doing MacKinnon Pass twice. When I got to the hut the afternoon before, the skies were pretty clear. Some other hikers mentioned it might be a good chance for fog-free photos, so I hauled up there in the evening (spectacular!). I was glad I did because the next day was pretty socked in. Still incredible, though. But OH, THE SANDFLIES!! Not sure I'd go back again because of them. I had bites everywhere and had a pretty bad reaction. (Also ended up doing a kayak in the Doubtful Sound afterwards, which was also covered in sandflies.) Keep up the awesome work on the channel! Cheers!

I have done this hike in 2016 which I booked 1 year in advance. My suggestion is to keep checking the calendar every day as some cancellations may happen and you can grab a spot in the huts (not the fancy ones). Also when I was there we had the record of rainfall of thatseason. All the trail was flooded and we were stuck in the second hut. We never made it ti the highets point and we had to hike all the way to the beggining with water up to our chest in some parts of the hike. You may think this was a bad experience but it was amazing as the more rain it falls the more waterfalls are formed. I have never felt so amazed by a landscape filled with thousand of waterfalls. So even if you have rainy days, you surely will enjoy that walk.
