Can't tell you how much this helps - its one thing to read how to do this but so much better when you can visualize it. A picture is indeed worth a thousand words! Thanks for doing this series. Let me know when you have one of these pipes for sale.

Very cool. Great info. Been wanting to try for a long time. Got a hobby block for fun. Should arrive today. Fun to mess around and maybe first step for me into more. I’ve got the time. Just need experience now. I had a buddy who made gorgeous pipes on the side. He’s a photographer but still made just amazing pipes. Since then... 4 years ago I’ve been wanting to mess around. I make leather stuff, knives and sharpening but this is so appealing. Have a package along with some tools and related arriving any time now. Trying to decide on an easier shape for a bent block to start out. I’d like to make a brandy shape but will go with whatever will keep my mess ups as low as I can. :). I also need to research how to do fills and correct any defects in the briar since I assume it’s going to be lower quality.

What is that black thing you're spreading all over that pipe? does it work like some kind of a varnishing thing? did you actually get that cool smooth looking shine only with alcohol and black dye?

I have a Dunhill Tanshell Poker circa 1959 that looks exactly like the one you turned out. Bob Renfro, K4OF.

Very interesting. I use straight leather dye and it doesn't bleed at all on the ones I've smoked.
@kraigseder11 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I know you saw it in the video, but the ratio can be played with. The only thing to watch out for is if it's too concentrated that the dye can bleed on your hand when the pipe gets hot.

Wonderful Videos. You are an Artist, an amazing one, thank you for sharing these beautiful moments with us.

I use Fiebings or Lincoln leather dye. When you dilute it use denatured alcohol only. I usually mix about 50/50 dye to alcohol. You can pick denatured alcohol up at most hardware stores or paint stores.

I don't see why not, though the bowl would be kind of big... or not. Take care man.

hmm my suggestion it to point the heat gun away from u and the water should be cool not cold to prevent internal stresses in vulcanite (saves it in the long run)
@kraigseder11 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. It may have been the leather dye I used. I used Fiebing light brown and it would come off on my hands after the pipe warmed. I then was told that I should be diluting it with denatured alcohol, BUT this is just what I do. I just subbed your channel. Take care.

Thank you very much! I'm glad that these videos helped. I am still somewhat new to pipe making but I really liked the pipe making videos when I was interested in into getting into the hobby. I will definitely let you know when I have my next batch of pipes ready. Take care.

Just a FYI. For when you dye the pipe. I have found out that putting a wine cork in the bowl helps prevent the dye going into the bowl. Thanks for the video.
@ZealFizzeel11 жыл бұрын
What brand of dye do you use? Also, when you mentioned diluting it, how much should it be diluted? Would more water be better? I certainly know that I don't want to end up with blackened fingers from bleeding dye whenever I smoke!
@8626John11 жыл бұрын
What ratio do you use between the dye and the denatured alcohol? Thanks for the videos and the answers to my questions.

Thanks for your videos. Good to know how they’re made. I can’t however find the reason why Briar is better. Can you explain?
@kraigseder2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you liked the videos. Briar is a burl of the heath shrub and it's extremely dense, but the most important is that it's extremely heat resistant. Also it doesn't give off flavors of the wood when smoking tobacco in it.
@maxmedia65242 жыл бұрын
@@kraigseder so... I should definitely search for Briar pipes in the future. Thanks PS: how often do you smoke?
@kraigseder2 жыл бұрын
I would say 95% of all pipes are briar. Other materials used are Meerschuam, olive wood, morta (ancient bog oak) and clay. I really like Meerschuam pipes and I have a few. I've never tried using olive wood and I'm definitely not a fan of morta, but this is just my personal taste. I usually smoke 1 bowl in the evenings maybe 3 to 4 times a week. @@maxmedia6524

@@kraigseder ok...maybe I should hide my pipes in a time lock because I’ve been lightning up twice a day lately. One of my smoking pals found Captain Black in Ontario, which I really enjoy (not available in Quebec). For now it does the trick. So...i might just have a briar pipe after all...good to know! Thanks
@kraigseder2 жыл бұрын
Haha, I don't think twice a day is bad given you don't inhale. Captain Black is the first tobacco I ever smoked back in the early 90s. Now I enjoy Virginia's like Orlik Goldend Sliced and some Virginia Periques. One of my favorite tobaccos is a sweet English called Joe's Evening Campfire made by Deadwood Tobacco Company (deadwoodtobacco.com/). It's only available through their website but it is delicious. It's sweet and smoky and pairs perfect with a good Bourbon or single malt. @@maxmedia6524

ok and you use the 98 degree alcohol which is usually blue coloured and can be found at any supermarket?because i found that there are some different kinds of denatured alcohol.And smthing else,why you light the pipes on fire?thanks!
@kraigseder10 жыл бұрын
You'll find denatured alcohol with painting supplies. I've only seen one type of denatured alcohol but I've only looked at a hardware store. I've seen all the professional pipe makers light the mixture on fire to set the dye. I honestly don't do it every time and I never light the rusticated pipes since this leaves a green residue.

Do you need to put a clear coat on at all? Someone told me I should but I didn't see it In a lot of these types of videos, thanks.
@kraigseder10 жыл бұрын
I just buff with carnauba wax. Some put shellac on their pipes and there is nothing wrong with using it. Using shellac can be tricky until you get the right shellac & alcohol mixture.

could you please tell me what kind of paints do you use?tha black is a simple colour for simple woods and light brown?
@kraigseder10 жыл бұрын
The dye is used is Fiebings Black for my contrast coat (then sand down) and Fiebings Light Brown for the color. I usually dilute the leather dye with 50% denatured alcohol. I've used Fiebings leather dye and Lincoln and both are very similar.
