Excellent 1969 flick based on actual events which happened WEST of Java. Great effects for it's time.

These were the most realistic depictions of a landslide-triggered tsunami I saw in a movie. That shot of the waves approaching the coastline is both spectacular and terrifying at the same time.

I find special effects done with real water, fire, explosions, scale models etc... generally much more satisfying than CGI.

Considering at the time of production and the absence of computer generated technology, this was an excellent simulation of the events before and after the eruption. Unlike the new movies which do not need miniature reproduction because all are made through the help of tricks of photography.

I saw this when it came out. One heck of a film. It's tidal wave sequence still holds up all these years later. How on earth did they get a "wave tank" to produce something so realistic looking. Tidal waves have been the feature of nightmares for me for over fifty years. This movie got that ball rolling.
@breakthru7608

Indrid_Cold I believe they filmed a lot of the surf along the Californian coast quite close up to get those scenes where it's slowly rolling in. There's nothing more realistic than the real thing.

Ingrid_C. I saw it as a child too and always had tidal wave nightmares for most of my life. I never watched Titanic or any movie involving oceans and waves. I hardly go to the beach except to walk. Nobody can talk me into going on cruises. 🙂

Considering that the fourth and final cataclysmic blast vaporized the entire six cubic miles of Krakatoa and blew it eastward over Java, you could definitively say 'Krakatoa, East of Java'.

Aside from screwing up the geography, the film did have a good story, the acting was generally solid, and the special effects for that time were spectacular. It also has a close-up of a shoe in one scene for some unknown reason...but in the end, it was a watchable flick. Not accurate, geographically speaking, but very watchable.

Fun Fact: the Academy Award-nominated FX for this film were partially done by Eugene Lourie, the former production designer who directed several creature-features starting with THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS, which started off the modern Kaiju genre and inspired the original GODZILLA. He actually has a brief moment in the film as the lighthouse keeper who sends out an emergency telegram moments before the tsunami hits.

I loved this movie when it came out. Very pleasing images, production values, music, cast, and story. Maximillian Schell is wonderful as is Diane Baker. Brian Keith was very convincing as a washed-up diver. I love Jacqui Chan as Sal Mineo's Japanese love interest. Though not Japanese, she pulled off the image well. As I understand it, there was a real incident in the Krakatoa erruption in which a stalwart captain guided a boat miraculously through the catastrophe much as happened here.

All this nonsense about EAST is given by people who never saw the movie and only reading some review or wikipedia. If you actually SEE the movie you would understand the title, though confusing, makes sense because its based on the plot, the boat travels away from Krakatoa easterly through the straight past Java (where Brian Keith gets left & is wiped out) into open waters. In the dialogue Krakatoa is spoken as the volcano's path and they give their ultimate destination as east of Java.

I saw this at the theatre in Chicago when I was 13 years old. It was a roadshow production. In those days, you had certain movies that only played either once or twice a day, like a play. It was reserved seats. The new Goodman Theatre preserved the part of the old theatre where it played: The Michael Todd Theatre.

@Gnillob802 ....where are you? In the path of Krakatoa trying to evacuate, we've made it through the strait, past the islands, and currently east of Java. This gets shortened in the title to KRAKATOA, EAST OF JAVA. Confusing, but in reference to the film's plot and dialogue, accurate.

They didn't show the actual final explosion of the volcano. Unlike most land volcanoes, huge amounts of seawater entered into the lower than sea level crater formed by the first smaller explosion. This then created a gigantic final explosion that literally blew the volcano apart. When it was over, there was nothing but water where Krakatoa had been. It took almost 50 years before Anak Krakatoa (son of Krakatoa) began to form above the sea.

Can get it from Amazon. Also 'Krakatoa,the last days' very good BBC docu/drama. Also 'Krakatoa' by Rupert Ferneaux, excellent account of the tragic events. The tsunami is terrifying but all the accounts I have seen and read testify to the accuracy of how it must have been for all those poor people and animals along the coasts both sides of the Sunda Straits.

@Gnillob802 Similar complaints were made about 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea where you have some idiot who never read the story suggesting the sea isn't 20,000 Leagues deep. The story states the submarine travels a distance of 20,000 Leagues but completely underwater. The title is shortened and leads to confusion.
@robertgaudet7407
@robertgaudet7407 5 жыл бұрын
Which is pretty impressive since apparently even during WW2 submarines could neither dive very far under nor move very fast once submerged. Being able to travel 20,000 leagues without surfacing in the 19th century would've been a hell of a feat.

@RenegadeCossack well no, the reason they said east was because the east sounded more mysterious and exotic than saying west, it was a marketing thing not that they couldn't read a map... its all there in the production fluff if you do some research.

I saw this in a Cinerama theater when it first came out. I was only 6 years old at the time, so I remember almost nothing about it except that the guy from the TV show Family Affair (Brian Keith) was in it. Maybe I fell asleep. Even the Cinerama didn't make an impression on me because it was one of the first movies I ever went to and I had nothing to compare the big screen to. Maybe they should make a film "Pelee East of Martinique", then nobody will be left at the end coz everyone was killed.

@RenegadeCossack well that's Hollywood for your never let the facts get in the way of a good story. What about the more recent film James Cameron's Titanic s, which had so many inaccuracies in it about the real disaster, it was ridiculous. It was telling that the only Oscars it get were for its CGI effects and not for the script or direction of it.

One of the crappiest films I have seen. I recorded it on TV, and watched it last night, (fast-forwarding over lots of touchy feely stuff). They were looking for a sunken ship, and a party went up in a balloon to look for it. The engine on the balloon conked out, and the wind carried them through chasms on the island, then up to the crater, where it took fire, so they jumped out of it - and were only a few feet above the water - and right by the ship again, so the wind must have reversed! Bull.
