From the BBC docu-drama, "Krakatoa: The Last Days." The movie is also known as "Krakatoa: Volcano of Destruction" and aired on Discovery Channel. The movie brings to life the journals and recollections of four witnesses who survived the cataclysmic eruption of Krakatoa in August of 1883.
This segment features the Beijerinck (Beyerinck) family in the village of Ketimbang, Sumatra. Controller Willem Beijerinck was one of seven assigned to oversee the growth and development of the Dutch colonies. Krakatoa had been building up activity, sending forth little explosions and a column of smoke from May to July. Many viewed this phenomenon as spectacular yet harmless. But to a few, such as Johanna Beijerinck, Willem's wife, this was an ominous sign of terrible things to come. This is her account from her journal.
On August 26, 1883, Krakatoa entered into its paroxysmal phase, with eruptions on a virtually continuous basis and explosions heard every 10 minutes. A black cloud of ash arose from its depths to 17 miles (27km) high. The combined result of such heavy volcanic activity birthed the first of the tsunami that would destroy the coastal villages surrounding the volcano.

I read about Krakatoa when I was a very small girl, 7 years old in 1972. That was what started my lifelong love for volcanoes. I then spent 15 years reading everything about volcanoes. I think it is odd that the people around Krakatoa didnt take the signals seriously. They have lots of volcanoes, some dorment some active and they are used to tsunamis due to the fact that earthquakes are rather common. the last days moved me and the sound when the mountain explodes was massive. Allmost real.

I have to say its depiction of the tsunami, although dramatic, is sooooo much more "tamed" than the real deal. If you watch some of the Japan tsunami videos, even cars can't outrun them, needless to say that nobody can possibly survive the impact of a tsunami.

The most dangerous part of a tsunami is actually after it ends... Then the water will recede back to its normal point again, pulling everything drifting in it out to sea with it. To indicate the force with which this happens, next time you're on a beach, stand with your feet in the sand where a small wave can wash over them. Feel the sand being pulled out from under you? Now imagine that little wave being 30 feet tall: That's how screwed you are.

Yep, and by then you'd usually be mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted from trying to stay above water, fighting the current, probably have some cuts and bruises from debris in the water hitting you and end up so far out of shore you wouldn't have made it back even if you were in full health. Usually the sea currents will make you drift even further out too, so unless you've got a VERY active coastguard or are lucky enough to end up near a ship traffic lane, you're... basically as close to being dead as you can get without actually being dead. After Krakatoa, human skeletons of victims were washing up on the coast of _Africa_ as late as a year after the eruption.

Yeah, this is one of the reasons why I wanted to post this series. I want people to be aware of its power. I was so sad about the tsunami that hit in 2004 because no one was able to report its approach. With Anak Krakatoa growing at a fast pace, August 26-27 will happen again sooner or later, and hopefully by that time, people will be ready for it.

It's scary to imagine if Anak Krakatoa experienced an eruption similiar to 1883. The death toll would dwarf those in 1883 since the the islands like Java and Sumatra are much more populated today compared to back then if the eruption of Anak Krakatoa was accompanied by tsunamis.

Krakatoa rebuilt its island in 1927. Everyone called it Anak Krakatoa, Krakatoa's son. Its still growing! I live in indonesia too.

What makes a tsunami dangerous is that not only the force of the impact would kill you, but when the water recedes back it takes everything to open sea/ocean. It's like when a small wave pushes sand over your feet, and when the water gets back it pulls the sand. Same process only that you're the sand! Shout out to Amyante. kzbin.info

Well, what they thought were three different volcanic peaks were actually one huge mass underneath. All that pressure, it had to blow eventually and when it let loose, it just kept on going until it was emptied out. Sad to say but you just can't predict when or how these things will happen.

Aquele Vulcão era na realidade um Extrato Vulcão. Assim como o Vesúvio, as pessoas não tinham ideia que estavam vivendo com um inimigo perto deles. Talvez achasse que se tratava de uma montanha qualquer. Quando despertaram para o perigo, já era tarde demais. Extrato Vulcão é extremamente explosivo. Pois tem alta formação de gás acumulado, o que faz as erupções serem tremendamente explosivas.😳👍

I don't know if I'm wrong, and somebody will no doubt tell me so here, but I think the entire island of Krakatoa was blown out of the water by the massive volcanic eruption in August 1883. Today there is a new island and volcano that's grown over years, called Anak Krakatoa that translates from Indonesian as son of it.
