wooden fletching was really common for crossbows. At least the ones used for warfare. The reason for it is that they could easily stockpile ammunition and wouldn't have to worry about the vanes being damaged no matter how long they were stored.

I use a belt sander in reducing the limbs to where I begin tillering. One caveat I have learned is that it is incredibly easy to sand a hinge into a limb down at the pulley end of the belt. I turned a 40 pound bow into a 25 pound bow this way. I still use the belt sander, but I am smarter now... I hope.

I feel your pain, I had a very similar problem. I did all the work on my first bow with hand tools only and it turned out beautifully at 55'ish pounds, so of course I got a tad arrogant and decided to rush through a new bow with the belt....to disastrous results 😅

If you want the prod to also bend in the middle you have to round the corners of the socket it goes in. To match the curvature of the bow when it's ready to fire so the corners don't get in the way.

you gotta revisit the 50 dollar bow , try a steel door hinge and put a bur on it for the scraper , and take the stands out of the paracord to twists a string and maybe fishing like to reinforce it ? Maybe also try a fiber glass fence tension thingy for a backing

You can also easily shift the prod a little to the left or the right to correct your windage if the crossbow is shooting to the left or to the right.

I feel speed would be more important for a crossbow due to the short action period (bow accelerating the bolt) Unlike a bow where it has about a metre to accelerate, a bolt only seems to have 1/2 - 1/4 of that

Correct but crossbow (medieval) was a very inefficient platform hence why there are astronomical draw weights in medieval crossbows , like 1000 lbs , the bolt still has less energy then a 100 lbs bow because of the power stroke

Keep your fingers out of the triangle when you are placing your dart, hold the dart near the head, otherwise if your crossbow accidentally fires you won't injury or lose your fingers.

Feather fletchings work better imo. Wait till you see the slow mo launch footage, that is when you will realize how superior a crossbow is to a bow. The ammunition is inherently more accurate, no spine to worry about. Flies like a bullet.

As there are only two vanes required on a crossbow ..wood works fine as it does not have to collapse on encountering the hand or bow on release . If wooden vanes where used on an arrow they would injure the archer on release. .

the bolts also have wooden fletching because 1; wooden fletching's are easier to make and you can make them in more abundance then feathers. also feathers get wet, crushed, and they overall tend to be more of an headache.

Ok, So you need steel for the limbs, the kind of steel wich you cannot bend it 90 degree wihtout snaping, the dangerous kind! That makes really fast bow for crossbow. Or you can build fiber and carbon limbs. Really guys i do not get why you keep wasting wood in the middle of your limbs as a filer. When you can use carbon fiber for compression, and glass for tension. And you make alost faster limb than using wood. Wood is cheaper but a crossbow limb is shorter. So i sugest using carbon fibers, you need to taper it but on the back you will cut the fibers on the back of the platband, assuming you use that. Then on the back where you tapered, you stick the fiber glass, as many layers you think you need. After you done all of that take some nylon cord, and cover it tight in that, the entire limb. This will prevent it from snaping. Steel is cheaper... But if you take the time to make a carbon fiber and glass limb is alot better and faster than steel.

Sorry but this tiller is in no way inspired by "spanish 16 century crossbow". Spanish 16 century crossbow, unlike this LARP monstrousity, is pinnacle of crossbow design, sleek, light, robust and adopted to mass production. Check photos from Malta armoury, they have lots of them, really beatifull things. Check Santa Clara wreck (1564), they found several crossbows of the same type, replicas were made and 3D scans are available. Main difference is that the tillers are much thinner, 2 by 1.5 inches, which in real life is quite enough for 150-200 kilos steel bow (yes, I have replica made, I checked). Nut is also absolutelly wrong. It is closer to German design, with flat plate and hooks (but done incorreclty), Spanish were usually without plate, with simple circular cut - mass production, remember? They were mounted without any pins or cords, that is correct, and were quite easy to replace and loose (Bernal Diaz mentions "nuts jumping out", in other case last nut from crossbow "jumped away" and was swallowed by large fish but was later recovered when fish was caught). Cut for the bolt in the nut is wrong, since it does not allow to place the bolt in such a way that string is pushing the center of it. And no stirrup, they were spanned by goat-foot lever.

Check out the “Maximillian” crossbow in the Berlin history museum. You’ll find very specific measurements and details in a catalogue published in 2019. It’s a Spanish crossbow that was in the collection of Emperor Maximillian I. This was inspired by that crossbow…I don’t think it is quite fair to say that this is a “Larp monstrosity”, although that is pretty funny! Cheers!
