Kramzer is hilarious. I like him more the more videos I watch. You guys have a great dynamic; you can rib without getting visibly ticked. The amount of variety spread over three commentators leads people to a lot of worthy music they may have missed. I'm checking out some stuff I didn't know much about because of you guys.

Great work TLM. Really enjoyed this week as 1982 was one of my high school years ( and crucially formative musically like most people) so quite a few of the albums on my list are sentimental ( as well critical) favourites but there are also a few on here that I wasn't into at the time but grew on me over the years. ( Prince, Van Morrison, Springsteen) . My top 25 albums of 1982. 4 stars 25: Tropical Gangsters - Kid Creole and the Coconuts 24. Nebraska - Bruce Springsteen 23. The Gift - The Jam 21. Very nice to see The Dream Syndicate ranked so high. The band recorded it at night & went to work in the day. Props as well for Pornography securing a very high placement. What a trio of albums by The Cure .. 17 Seconds , Faith & Pornography. I can lose myself in Chinese art & American girls.

Contra Joe -- at least one person in the comments loves The Birthday Party, and even Junkyard. They appeared at a time when everyone in Australia was trying to be either icy cool, arty and well-styled, or drunken-loutish. Except them. Nice to see them get a mention.

Kram speaks the truth. His list was the best. Even though he is the one TLM critic that doesn't seem to care for Elvis Costello. The Beat/Orange Juice/Willie Nelson/XTC/The Clash/Prince/Bruce Springsteen But the actual wild card was Junkyard. An unholy racket that is not for the faint of heart. I saw them the following year on their farewell tour; to this day, it is one of my most intense concert experiences. All three album rankings have been very watchable, and at times surprising.

I don’t hate Elvis Costello, but I’ve never found him to be a particularly compelling singer (he sounds flat/monotone), and his songs, while often possessing moments of catchiness, often fail to deliver big hooks and choruses to tie everything together. “Man Out of Time” is my favorite song from Imperial Bedroom, yet I still feel like there’s something missing from the chorus to launch it into the stratosphere and make it a worthy top 20 song of 1982. I own This Year’s Model, Imperial Bedroom, and King of America, but I wouldn’t go above 4 stars for any of them , and everything else I’ve heard from Costello has been underwhelming (especially that Trust album some of these guys havenrated highly).

Kram never fails to be…interesting, with some challenging and unconventional picks. Can’t believe Imperial Bedroom was not included…is he seriously suggesting Blondie’s The Hunter is a better album? Not sure what universe that lines up in, but not this one. Loved The English Beat pick though. Always fun. Cheers, JPE

I don't get that Joe and the other two guys don't get Simple Minds - New Gold Dream but then again the US never really got Simple Minds until Don't You Forget About Me became a US number 1 on the back of The Breakfast Club soundtrack. NGD is sublime, uplifting and transcendental.

New Gold Dream is on most lists as one of 1982’s best records, so it not being in anyone’s top 25 makes no sense… but, I can see that these guys aren’t looking for what I am looking for in music… this album grew on me with time, as many of my faves have- and that aspect itself, that there was/is always more to it on every listen - is a big part of what I love about it…

Excellent exercise! 1982 was the year I fully embraced the new music, while still sticking with old favourites. For my top 25 I decided to stick with 25 titles I enjoyed then, which have also survived 40 years of culls of my physical vinyl and/or CD libraries. If they're still there, there must be a good reason. 2/25! 82 another huge year for me. We do agree on the Cure's Pornography at no. 2. My album of 82 is Trials and Crosses by the Cuddly Toys. Definitely some unexpected choices on this list. I was also not expecting in a million years to see that Willie Nelson album, but I like it, I have it at 4 stars. Some others I definitely disagree with lol. But there were 7 albums here that I had on my own list. It was cool to see Dream Syndicate. It was entertaining to see your selections!

Athena is one of my favorite Who songs. Love how the rhythms dance from verse to verse. Tempo's hopping around here, there, and everywhere....and the lyrics are brilliant!.."My heart felt like a shattered glass in an acid bath".."He had a snake the size of a sewer pipe living in his rib cage, I felt like a pickled priest being flambed".....Pete's a genius with words.

Siouxsie & the Banshees - A Kiss in the Dreamhouse 2. R.E.M. - chronic town ep (doesn’t meet your criteria, but still has enough musical quality on its 5 tracks to be better than all but one full-length this year) 1. Simple Minds - New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) - have any of you heard it? I’m rather hoping not.

Popping in to say that Junkyard is awesome. Not often we hear Nick mentioned on the channel. That album is him at his most visceral and chaotic.

Another great entry into this feature. Some wild picks from Kramzer, but I appreciate the love for Joni, and while I don't listen to metal much anymore, Number of the Beast used to be one of my favorite albums, and I'd still include it. I don't have time to do my own list, but a few albums from this year that I would want to see here include Juju Music, by King Sunny Ade; Big Science, by Laurie Anderson; and Ship Arriving Too Late to Save A Drowning Witch, by Frank Zappa.

I'm definitely a '70s Scorpions guy, loving Roth's playing so much and the different sort of rock they did back then. But, still great to see them here, along with one of the very best and most energetic Iron maiden records.

Signals, to me, is a perfect album. Not one bad song. As much as I love Rush, there's only a few albums of theirs I can say that about. "New World Man" is my least favorite on it but even that's OK for what it is, the pop-prog hit single. Digital Man is insane. The guitar on The Analog Kid is among Alex's best ever. And I'm a space-exploration nut so I love Countdown. Love the Ben Mink guest spot and what a great song that is! Love it love it love it. All of it. 5-star album.

Kram’s list wins hands down because he has Prince highest. I liked 1999, Thriller, Nebraska and Security the most from his choices. I wasn’t evenly slightly a Peter Gabriel fan before 1982 project started but now I’m pretty huge on him now.

Especially happy to see Dream Syndicate and Birthday Party on the list. Big fan of Junkyard, but my favorite Birthday Party album is Live 1981-82. In my top 10 live albums; it's like getting slammed against a wall, over and over and over...in a good way.

You saw Willie this year? He's so old and still kickin ass! And his 2 sons Lukas and Micah are very compatible with Willie. I recall Willie announced retirement some years ago. Which is reasonable. Another album that didn't get mentioned is Beatitude by Ric Ocasek. It didn't make my top ten but it is a good album. Most of it is pretty Cars-ish, which is just fine, with that familiar new wave catchiness, though less guitar-centered, but the closing track Time Bomb is dark and apocalyptic. Worth a listen if you're not familiar.

I love The Birthday Party, but their best format is a live setting. That being said, they're live album, '81-'82, is their best album sonically. It just didn't happen for them in a studio setting.

You guys are American so don't know this but there was a big ska revival in the late 70s to early 80s involving bands like Madness, the Specials, Selector - the (English) Beat were part of that and Kram if you like that song it's worth checking out those bands and others like Gang of Four. The Specials were no.1 twice as were Madness.Basically it was a lot to do with Jerry Dammers who would form The Specials but also the indie label 2 Tone that many of these bands were signed to.

None of your lists were perfect (Where's Linda Ronstadt's "Get Closer", for one?), but I think I like the spirit and variety of Kram's list the best. No 1982 list should be without Mirage or Wild Things Run Fast. I take exception to Jason and Joe's talking smack about these two great albums! But they make up for it for including "The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect" and "All the best Cowboys..." "The Nylon Curtain" on their lists, respectively.

I haven’t heard that one, but as someone who likes the NCATBS stuff I’ve heard, I tracked through the Mutiny/Bad Seed comp, which most fans seem to consider their best achievement, and it was one of the two or three worst of the thousand or so albums I’ve heard over the past four years. Wretched.

I really enjoyed listening to a ton of albums from 1982 and look forward to checking out a few I missed in the coming weeks, especially that Church record about which Kram and Jason spoke so highly. I also look forward to exploring the Willie Nelson, Roches and Ultravox records. If I counted right, it looks like I have 7 in common with Joe, 4 in common with Jason and 8 in common with Kram. I was getting a "return error" when I tried to post my whole list, so I've replied with batches of five with star rating and reviews.

Artist: Simonetti/Pignatelli/Morante Album: Tenebre OST Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: Three of the original Goblin members team up to provide one of their finest soundtracks, right up there with Suspiria and Deep Red (also Dario Argento films). Simonetti embraces the new available synthesizer technology available to him in the 80s to set the mood for this Giallo classic. Key Track(s): “Tenebre,” “Flashing,” “Lesbo” 22. Artist: Bad Brains Album: Bad Brains Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: The template for hardcore punk, but still sounds jarringly fast now. I must admit, I like Rock For Light a bit more than this (has many of the same songs in a different sequence and different recording) but the influence of this one can’t be understated. Key Track(s): “Big Take Over,” “Attitude,” “Banned in DC” 23. Artist: Descendants Album: Milo Goes to College Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: The young Descendants help set the template for pop punk. Plenty of classics with innocent lyrics and no excess. The longest song is 2 minutes and ten seconds (“Bikeage”)! Key Track(s): “Suburban Home,” “Hope,” “Bikeage” 24. Artist: A Certain Ratio Album: Sextet Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: I first learned about this band as the neglected Factory Records band that could only muster a small crowd at the opening night of the Hacienda in 24 Hour Party People. Funky layered post-punk. I had previously heard To Each and found this one to be more groovy. Key Track(s): “Lucinda,” “Gum,” “Knife Slits Water” 25. Artist: LiLaPUT (aka Kleenex) Album: Lilaput Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: I learned about this band through Kurt Cobain’s handwritten greatest albums of all-time which emerged some years ago. This is actually LiLaPUT/Kleenex’s second album, but can mostly be found within a compilation CD that includes everything they did. Has a great bouncy and quirky quality somewhat reminiscent of The Slits or The Raincoats, but firmly its own thing. Swiss girls rock! Key Track(s): “In a Mess,” “Do you mind my dream,” “Outburst”

16. Artist: A Flock of Seagulls Album: A Flock of Seagulls Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: Like most, I only knew the wonderful “I Ran,” which I wrote off as a one hit wonder. I had in recent years acknowledged the song as a classic and picked up the 7”. Boy was I wrong about this group being a one hit wonder. This album is a fun listen from beginning to end with sterling production and an original sound for the time. Maybe we should ignore the goofy haircut. Key Track(s): “I Ran,” “Space Age Love Song,” “Modern Love is Automatic” 17. Artist: Missing Persons Album: Spring Session M Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: A nice blend of punk and synthpop. I guess this is new wave? I really dig the vocal style of Dale Bozzio and the playing (including some former members of Frank Zappa’s live band) is legit. Key Track(s): “Words,” “Walking in L.A.,” “Destination Unknown” 18. Artist: Iron Maiden Album: Number of the Beast Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: It’s taken me a while to come around to the new wave of British heavy metal which we all mocked in the 90’s, but it’s albums like this that became a selling point. While rocking, there’s an element of fun that largely slipped away in the ensuing decades. Key Track(s): “Number of the Beast,” “Run to the Hills,” “Invaders” 19. Artist: Yazoo/Yaz Album: Upstairs at Eric’s Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: Like everyone else, I had heard the big hits, but was pleasantly surprised how much all the other tracks fell into the same vein and kept a smile on my face. 80’s synthpop done right. Goodbye 70’s! Key Track(s): “Situation,” “Only You,” “Don’t Go,” “Goodbye 70’s” 20. Artist: Prince Album: 1999 Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: Prince oozes sexiness on this one. The runtime is a bit longer than it needs to be (70 minutes for 11 tracks), but I actually kinda enjoy the extended tracks when I’m listening to them. This would be a fantastic album to play at a party! Key Track(s): “Delirious,” “Little Red Corvette,” “1999”

11. Artist: Rush Album: Signals Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 Summary: Perhaps Rush is the 70’s band that best adjusted to the 80’s by fully embracing synths, but not losing their identity. Signals still very much rocks and continues to showcase Geddy’s exceptional bass playing and Neil Peart’s clever arrangements and songwriting. Key Track(s): “Subdivisions,” “Digital Man,” “Countdown” 12. Artist: Bruce Springsteen Album: Nebraska Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: Going into this deep dive, I thought this album had a good chance of winning. I guess it dropped a bit because I realized it’s so front-loaded. It’s the album that really turned me onto Bruce and upon discovering that he was influenced by Suicide, his cool factor went up tenfold. This album should be played while driving at night on a country road. Key Track(s): “State Trooper,” “Atlantic City,” “Nebraska” 13. Artist: Gun Club Album: Miami Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: Crank up the reverb! I was under the false impression that Fire of Love was the only essential Gun Club album. This one leans a bit more in the swampy/Scientists direction, but it certainly doesn’t leave the punk behind. Plus they’re doing a Leadbelly Cover (“John Hardy”) before Nirvana made it cool. Key Track(s): “Fire of Love,” “Texas Serenade,” “Run Through the Jungle” 14. Artist: Flipper Album: Album: Generic Flipper Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: Much like some of the fun elements of metal got left in the 80’s, so did the darker elements of punk. Flipper presents a dark, ugly, demented world of which I want not part but can’t help but voyeuristically stare into. Flipper was just one of these dark druggy SF punk bands from a scene that was ultimately overshadowed by the pop punk of L.A. Key Track(s): “Sex Bomb,” “Life is Cheap,” “(I Saw You) Shine” 15. Artist: The Clash Album: Combat Rock Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: Unlike many albums that made this list, I have listened to this one quite a bit and I have long defended it as underrated next to some of their earlier material. Yes, this has some of their biggest hits, but it also has one of the greatest songs of all-time, “Straight to Hell.” Key Track(s): “Straight to Hell,” “Rock the Casbah,” “Should I Stay or Should I Go,” “Know Your Rights”

6. Artist: Richard and Linda Thompson Album: Shoot Out the Lights Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: I had fallen in love with the song “I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight” and went on to check out that album which was great. Though that still is the classic song from this couple, this album is better all the way through. Also, this gets bonus points for (I think) sonically referencing “Rumble” on “Shoot Out the Lights.” This is perhaps the greatest breakup album of all time (yes, better than the overrated Rumors by Fleetwood Mac). Key Track(s): “Shoot Out the Lights,” “Walking on a Wire,” “The Wall of Death” 7. Artist: The Fall Album: Hex Enduction Hour Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 Summary: The Fall has an absolutely enormous catalog, which can make them difficult to approach for the uninitiated. That being said, most Fall fans would recommend this one on the short list of places to start. And for good reason! There is a classic lineup here with some of Mark E. Smith’s most thought provoking lyrics and still sonically what you’d want from the great Manchester post-punk band. Key Track(s): “Winter/Winter 2,” “Hip Priest,” “Jawbone and the Air Rifle,” “Who Makes the Nazis?” 8. Artist: Kate Bush Album: The Dreaming Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 Summary: Kate Bush has lately been undergoing a bit of a renaissance due to the masterful “Running Up That Hill” being featured on the television series Stranger Things. The Dreaming preceded Hounds of Love, arguably Bush’s most accessible record. If you are here for the more zany experimental side of Kate Bush, you’ll find it in spades on The Dreaming. Key Track(s): “Suspended in Gaffa,” “Sat in your Lap,” “Leave it Open” 9. Artist: Solid Space Album: The Space Museum Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 Summary: This underground album was completely off my radar until doing the deep dive of 1982. Including some snippets from sci-fi films and lyrics painting a dystopian future with an original sound that combines krautrock and Joy Division vibes. The songwriting here is truly wonderful! To write this off as minimalism is to undersell the beauty of this album. I was happy to learn that Dark Entries records reissued this (originally a cassette in the 80’s) record on vinyl with the other two songs this obscure band produced. Key Track(s): “Tenth Planet,” “New Statute (Morning Song),” “Spectrum is Green” 10. Artist: Mission of Burma Album: Vs. Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 Summary: I recently read Our Band Could Be Your Life by Michael Azerrad which featured a chapter about this band and spoke highly about this album. As I listen to this album, I find myself just falling into the clustered punky jams all the way through. Perhaps it’s also Martin Swope’s electronic and tape sound effects that provide the special sauce that makes this album so special. This band is much more than “Academy Fight Song” and “That’s Why I Reach For My Revolver” and this album proves their depth. Key Track(s): “Trem Two,” “Mica,” “That’s How I Escaped My Certain Fate”

1. Artist: The Dream Syndicate Album: The Days of Wine and Roses Score:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: My #1 album from 1982 is one that I had never heard going in. I vaguely knew about the Paisley Underground scene, but it wasn’t until further research that I found out more about the Velvet Underground influence, which is always a good thing. Jagged, jangly and reverb-y riffs, wonderful baritone vocals, catchy melodies and some solid rock. As much as my 1982 top 25 list is full of synth classics, there’s nothing wrong with the ol’ guitar, bass and drums. Key Track(s): “The Days of Wine and Roses,” “Until Lately,” “That’s What You Always Say,” “Then She Remembers,” “Halloween” 2. Artist: The Cure Album: Pornography Score:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: This is one of those albums by a classic band that is thankfully devoid of greatest hits type material. There is a continual dark descent into the grotesque. This album is so great, it’s almost surprising when it’s over. From “One Hundred Years” to “Pornogrpahy” it’s classic Cure all the way through. Key Track(s): “The Hanging Garden,” “One Hundred Years,” “Pornography,” “Cold” 3. Artist: Siouxsie and the Banshees Album: A Kiss in the Dreamhouse Score:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: My knowledge of Siouxsie has been unfortunately quite limited, and I only really knew their punky late 70’s material. But I think they really hit their stride originality-wise with this excellent post-punk goth brilliance. This album is produced masterfully with outstanding playing that makes you almost feel underwater. Key Track(s): “Slowdive,” “She’s a Carnival,” “Green Fingers,” “Painted Bird” 4. Artist: Michael Jackson Album: Thriller Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: As overplayed as this album is, when you break it down to its component parts, it’s truly remarkable. The album plays almost like a greatest hits album (except the inclusion of the overrated Paul McCartney on “The Girl is Mine”). It takes talent, great songwriting and ace production to produce a batch of bangers like this. Key Track(s): “Wanna Be Startin Something,” “Billie Jean,” “Thriller,” “Beat It,” “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” 5. Artist: Duran Duran Album: Rio Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: My passion for music has been mostly an independent journey as my parents’ musical taste is limited and sometimes not good, especially my father. Luckily it hasn’t been all bad though, and my love for Duran Duran connects me with commuting to work with him back in the day and listening to their greatest hits compilation, Decade. Rio’s deep cuts stand up right next to the hits and for better or for worse, this album changed the musical landscape of the 1980’s. I’d actually argue that it’s ahead of its time. Key Track(s): “Save a Prayer,” “Rio,” “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “New Religion”

Kram the Man had some intriguing ideas and interesting choices indeed. I was quite surprised to see Genesis sitting high at number three. I’m a big fan of both the Gabriel era and the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich era as well. I just usually don’t count live albums in countdowns or Listographies. Personal choice.
