You finally got a 5 star! Happy to see it! I guess I need to go back to that album, I liked it and gave it 4 stars but it does seem like one that grows. Also so happy to see Spoons make the list (and for the shout-out 😊), loved what you had to say about it. It has long been an album I've really loved so I'm happy to see it received so positively. We have 11 matches in all, so I love a lot of these picks. There were a few I was surprised about, but that's part of the fun. Was super surprised to see you come around on #20, that is cool.

Great list Jason. I have been thinking of adding another Church album to my collection, you cinched it. I saw Nick at the Cow Palace open for The Cars in 82, great show, and discovered Spring Session M the same year, still an avid Missing Persons fan. I really enjoyed Jason’s selections. I love the 4th Peter Gabriel record, it’s my favourite of his and my number one for the year. Really like the love for The Church. XTC of course. And it was a pleasant surprise to hear Van Morrison mentioned on your channel, which seldom happens. I love his work, from the 60’s all the way up to the early 00’s. Some highlights are Veedon Fleece, Into The Music and No Guru, No Method, No Teacher which is his best album of the 80’s and clearly five stars. I agree that Beautiful Vision is a four star album, very good but not in Van’s top ten. The problem for me with Van Morrison is how he has turned out in recent years. He’s always been grumpy and bitter, but now he is downright mean, and his records are filled with conspiracy theories and general paranoia and nastiness. It makes it hard for me to enjoy his earlier work as much as I used to. But I would still love to see a ranking of his catalog, but it’s a lot to get through

First single Nova Heart was a big hit here in Canada, not sure why it wasn't bigger world-wide. 1989's Vertigo Tango is another great Spoons LP. Gord & Sandy continue to tour Ontario. They sound great, but they lack distinctiveness. I own Starfish (1988; #35 of that year for me) and enjoy it when it’s on, but it doesn’t take long for me to forget about the majority of the songs afterwards. Perhaps they just needed a more unique vocalist; he just sounds like a typical 80s indie pop singer. It’s almost like he was created in a laboratory. (Incidentally, RYM has The Blurred Crusade barely in the top 100 at #87, which seems like a suitable rank.) I just gave “Almost with You” a listen, and there’s no way that’s one of the best tracks of 1982. It’s pleasant though.

Interesting list. I think Jason is the TLM critic I typically have the least overlap with. Having said that some really nice choices in the 25. It is always curious to see how artists and albums are interpreted in hindsight. They have a very different flavor when you have lived through the era. Phil Collins is a case in point. For sure it was hugely popular to the point that it became hard to escape. But at the time it was very much middle-aged housewife music. Harmless easy listening could drown out the bratty kids. To see that it now has such praise from a music critic channel is eye-opening. I am sure you are right about it, I carry too much baggage about it from 1982 to be able to re-evaluate it. Nick Lowe is a great choice, same with Robyn Hitchcock. Seen them both live and they do not disappoint. The thoughts on Van Morrison floored me completely. St Dominic's Preview is a classic album for me. Possibly only bettered by Astral Weeks in his lengthy catalog. Beautiful Vision is a nice selection. Joe is right, Van is remarkably consistent. But still has some stunning high points. I am sure the length of his discography is daunting, and probably not smart to try and digest in a week or two. But I am still hopeful Van Morrison is given the full ranking at some point. Sparks caught me by surprise. I thought the quirkiness would have been a deterrent. Great to see their craft shine through. Nice summation of Imperial Bedroom. How is it not a 5-star album? (Billy Sherrill produced Almost Blue before Geoff Emerick took the console) Disappointed Elvis didn't come in at #1 but great to see some love for The Church. Loving the series. Thanks.

So far I share five titles with Joe:Elvis Costello and The Attractions-Imperial Bedroom, Prince-1999, Richard and Linda Thompson-Shoot Out The Lights, X- Under The Big Black Sun, The Roches-Keep On Doing. Also five with Jason-Elvis Costello and The Attractions-Imperial Bedroom, The Roches-Keep On Doing, Richard and Linda Thompson-Shoot Out The Lights, Peter Gabriel- Security, XTC-English Settlement. I've loved Richard and Linda Thompson since I was a teen, but I find Richard's voice to have gotten a bit melodramatic over the years. He sang in a more casual style early on, and Richard and Linda's first album, I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight, is in my top 50, maybe 25, lps of all time.Give that one a shot. I haven't listened to the Townshend album in years, but I prefer Empty Glass to many later Who lps; time to give Chinese Eyes a fresh listen. I've liked what I've heard of the Shoes, on some of the may power pop comps I have, so I'll have to give them a fuller listen. As far as Van goes, he's been treading water for decades. I've liked some later lps here and there, but his last masterpiece, for me, is Veedon Fleece (1974). It's my second favorite after Astral Weeks. And I've always liked The Church well enough, but I now I'm intrigued about Jason's number one.

The other problem with Thriller is The Girl is Mine, one of the worst songs ever written. What a great idea to have it not only be the lead single, but also have it precede the 3 punch combo of Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean.

The Fall and Lou Reed in my top 10 as well. The Blue Mask I re-listened to for the first time in a while for this list, sounds better than ever. Fernando Saunders bass playing on it is so incredible and unique. No one’s bass sounds like that! Add that to Robert Quines playing and Lou’s songs and you have an easy five star masterpiece.

I definitely prefer Rush's 80's stuff over their 70's. That was the decade I discovered Rush but the Police were the one that knocked me out. I got all 5 lp's within a year '83-'84. No '82 lp from them obviously. Forever Now is great. Rundgren did great. I will check out his Tortured Artist lp.

Your 1st sentence is exactly what I was about to comment. I’ve never heard of anyone not liking her voice, so Jason’s statement made me do a double take. She’s astounding on “Walking on a Wire.” I’d include The Blue Mask in my top ten.
@Manicprogressive12 жыл бұрын
I was scrolling for someone who also expressed dismay for Jason not liking Linda Thompson’s voice. Hers is my favorite all-time female voice. I tend not to like many; Celine, Mariah, and Whitney all leave me completely unmoved. But “Walking on a Wire”? Chills every time. I bought this album when it came out and glad to see it getting a lot of internet love lately. My theory about not liking many female singers is that I am a female with a very low voice and I couldn’t sing along to them! Explains why Lou was one of my favorite artists. Anyway, love this channel because it makes me reevaluate records I may have dismissed back in the day, being pretty much your typical college rock snob (college 1980-1986, so college radio and dorm room/apartment word of mouth was one of the few ways to be exposed to new music. And 120 minutes on MTV Sundays at 11 pm. Yay!) BTW, I love Richard Thompson, including his solo work and Fairport Convention, and have seen him many times since the early 80s. I like his rough voice and how it blends with Linda’s-no doubt because I can sing along with him but not even Linda’s alto, lol. And Aerosmith sucked in the 1980s and beyond, lol, when they evolved into a power ballad band. Janie’s Got a Gun only song I’ve liked.
