You are a wealth of knowledge. I have great amounts of patience. I am now very observant and I am listening to them “speak” when I am outside. Familiarizing myself with their distinct sounds. At this point they all sound very similar. With your very detailed help I will try with the crows when it gets warmer outside. We’re still in the middle of winter in Canada!

I live in the United States (Oregon ). I’ve been feeding crows for a while, and the male crow, the biggest one will perch on my deck, corner post, and caw at me, if I haven’t brought him out food and he’s looking right in my bedroom window. If I’ve already put out some peanuts and other treats, he won’t do it. I love your videos keep up the good work.👍🏼🩷

Growing up in Scotland, I knew 2 types of crow, carrion and hoodie. These lovely birds in the video I have since learned to call "pied crows". Scottish "hoodies" were bigger in body and had a quite distinct grey head...hence hooded. These were rated as "dangerous to young" by farmers and were shot quite often if lamb numbers justified the cartridge expense. They were quite sinister in appearance...big, brooding birds, always watching. The carrion crow was the more social, the joker, the interacting bird. Always taking a chance if there was a reward to be had.As for jackdaws stealing glitter, we had a carrion crow called gary as he didn't respond to challenges with food as targets but as soon as it was a cheap, shiny item, he was into it... Wholesale! Great beasties to play around with and to learn from...

Really enjoying your videos! "My" crows are also a pair of hooded crows. I have been feeding them ever since the male, "Bolek", tried to steal my breakfast off the table on my boat while I was below deck. I shared some with him, and he has been coming to visit ever since. He soon brought his mate "Lolek". So in a way, they chose me to spend time with. Lolek is more trusting and takes treats out of my hands, while Bolek is the clever one who will open boxes and pull up strings with treats on them. Last year, they brought their one surviving chick "Junior" out to my boat to be fed. He (or she) was so cute during that talking-to-themselves phase that the youngsters have. Looking forward to them bringing this year's babies to visit. Greetings from Tegelort!

In my area hoodies live nearby a huge park which is inhabited by a pair of ravens. Some of the local crows mimic ravens almost to perfection, maybe sounding just a LITTLE rougher and with less pronounced bass. One day i went out for a walk and went looking for a raven singing nearby. It turned out to be a hoodie!

I have a pair of hooded crows living in my garden, which are really defensive off cats and other small animals. If cats enter, they will watch them constantly, very often fly over them pecking and chasing them away. However they are very loud and sometimes screaming for hours, can become annoying after a while, they usually shut up if I shout or talk loudly to them. If that doesnt work I resort to mimicking one of their calls which I believe is for danger, that shuts them up.

The 'American' crows that live in our area provide an important service. They seem to really dislike raptors (such as Bald Eagles and hawks) and will vocalize to each other when such a bird is on the hunt nearby. It's very helpful for us when we take our six pound Papillon out for a poop. I hadn't thought of trying to make friends with them. Might be a good idea?

In the British Isles, Hoodies are common in Ireland and Scotland, you don't get them in England or Wales. I am in the South, so it is Magpies & Jackdaws around town and crows & Rooks in the countryside. Don't have much woodland/small forest near me so have not seen a Jay (Garrulus glandarius) in a long time. Thanks for sharing this 😀 Crows are certainly not "bird brained", they are good at solving puzzles.

In my native city of Kyiv most crows are of this hooded type. As a child I thought that hooded crows are simply magpies that dirtied their white parts :) Only later I understood that this is a different type of bird. I try to feed hooded crows in parks when I get an opportunity, but, like all crows, they are much more careful and shy than other species of birds.

We call the hooded crow simply "crow" in Denmark because it is by far the most common crow. We have a large population of rooks which are black with a metallic sheen, have a bald beak and are slightly bigger, but those are considered rooks, not crows. The raven is rare. So the much rarer carrion crow, as compared to the hooded crow, is called the black crow accordingly…

In european part of Russia, the hooded crow (vorOna) is one of dominating bird species in cities, pushed by jackdaws in smaller cities. * They pasture their large not flying youngsters leaved their nest, parents fly over head and attack humans passing by the youngster (people sometimes don't see the chick and are afraid of "aggressive crows", though it's enough to pass by faster away from the chick). * H.crows eat stone-hard dry bread also after soaking it in a puddle.

My husband has a subscription and I kept hearing bits and pieces from my side of the room and I always want to hear the whole thing (so I subscribed, too!). I will catch up with as many as I can. We love our crows and have so many questions. Right now, what's biggest on my mind is what happens with crows when they lose their mates. I hope you have already covered this, but if not, please consider it. That, and from this video, I wonder what all you know about hooded crows (Nebelkrähe here, too). We have many that mate with black ones, which gives us a whole mix in between (as you covered here). Do you suppose they become "bilingual" and keep the languages separate, or (here in Vienna) do you think have meshed the languages? Something else I have wondered about are the events of the large congregations around various buildings, like church towers or the tallest buildings around...they do this at least a few times a year early in the mornings---mating? passing on info (because I know crows know to come up to me for food in places I've never been. I have a dachi mix and she is always with us and makes us easily identifiable)?. Thanks for your posts!

Hi, thank you for subscribing :-) Those are very interesting questions! Thank you for this! We will try to answer them in one of the next videos.. Regarding your questions about the hybrids, I don't think there is a separate language between carrion and hooded crows. They have been regarded as the same species until recently and only differ in their plumage. And the hybrids are larger!

Great questions. On the subject of deceased conspecifics, I find the so-called crow burials interesting. In fact, crows have been observed time and again gathering in large groups around a dead animal in the face of a deceased conspecific. In their work, scientists Kaeli Swift and John Marzluff at the University of Washington pose the question of whether crows are capable of mourning deceased conspecifics. In particular, they also take the approach that crow burials may also be about identifying sources of danger so that they can learn from the fateful situation for the future. In a video on Misconceptions About Crows that we're working on right now, we want to go into more detail about that. Here's a link to Kaeli Swift's article: corvidresearch.blog/2015/09/26/why-crows-gather-around-their-dead/

@@florianzeitz6336, yes, I have seen incidences of this, myself. And just the other day, my husband was out and one of our crows came to him, very upset in a huge dialog, left for a second to go over a fence below their nest and retrieved one wet and mangled crow feather, like maybe it had been in a mammal's mouth. I've seen his mate since and know they are tending to a nest of babies, but don't know how many and don't think they are anywhere big enough for flight, but no way to tell as of yet. He sounded so upset and begging for help. I'm glad it wasn't his mate, but it still really affected him.

The Scrub Jays are much braver and will accept peanuts provided I stay a meter or so away. Both are corvids and are my favorite family (scientific classification) of birds. They'll chase bigger seagulls, like a herring gull, away during nesting season. Same with herons. But they're much more relaxed about which birds they regard as threats outside nesting season. Even the vocalizations they use to describe the threat to other crows changes during nesting season, I guess to let other crows know they're protecting a nest? Their language is very complex indeed I think.

I have no idea how I stumbled upon this, but this is very interesting. Here in the Netherlands I can't recall having seen hooded crows, only black crows. Would all these facts apply to black crows as well?

If I live in an apartment complex and befriend a crow, then move away, is it likely they will follow me to a new territory if I don’t move too far? I also wonder if this would be stressful for the crow as I would possibly be moving into the territory of other crows.

Hi, they will stay in their territory. It is hard to get one and the other crows won’t tolerate a newcomer in their own territory.

If honk your horn and scare crows they will follow you home and bring other crows yo make alot of raket early in the morning everyday. They will know your car a crap on it. They remember faces and more for years not days so be nice to them. I've heard crows bring gifts to people who feed them like trinkets bottle cap, money there way of thanking you to feed them and want to be friends. They have the intelligence of a 8 yr old child.

People that live in areas with a lot of crows often chose black chickens because they are mistaken for crows by birds of prey. I don't know how effective it is, so it might just be a myth.

Fact number 9: they are total a**holes. hooded crows are the only type of crow present in my island, and together with seagulls, are the most common big bird around here. they are in constant war with all other bird species.from sparrows to pidgeons, from common hill mynas to parrots. everything is fair game. not even kestrels are safe if outnumbered. they just do not care XD. watching their dogfights is really something.

Urban crows have a trash food problem, and you can see many of them suffer malnutrition (usually by having dead white feathers). We give ours a baseline of catfood and within 2 years, many of the recognizable crows look much better.

Hooded or grey crows also have a bad reputation for aggressively, and loudly, attacking the windows of homes and damaging doors, windows and pecking at lining materials between wood and glass. Not sure why they do this, but it's common. We call them rogue Hooded Crows.

While they're not crows, ravens in Yellowstone have started domesticating wolves. They spot prey for them from the air and scavenge the remains after the wolves have had their fill. The two also hang out together, and the ravens have been observed to form bonds with individual wolves, and even play with the wolf pups sometimes.

We currently have black crows causing a lot of damage to cars in our neighbourhood, especially windscreen wiper blades. Does anyone know why they do this? I know they are smart creatures and I want to understand why they do this, as it seems an odd thing to go for, it's not exactly a threat and we have lived with crows around here for years & they have never done this before.
@KrariTheCrow

I don’t know why they would do that. Maybe they are youngsters exploring and playing with things in their surroundings…

@@KrariTheCrow Thanks so much!! Super neat upate!! I've befriended one of them very quickly BTW!! Is there a matriarch or some such thing with crows?? The largest one comes 3-4 days a week and I notice out on our patio at work when they land and hops up to the back door and peeks in!! Waits for a few seconds before taking off and sits one the roof of the restaurant next door to us until I come out and make kissy sounds ^.^ Which means snacks!! They really are smart birds

And because they eat everything doesn't mean it's healthy for them :( Their diet should consists of first of all meat, vegs, fruits and cereal. They also like eggs and nuts, but too many aren't good because of much fat - only several a week. No bread of course. Not good for them to eat cat's or dog's food.

My crow friends love a little bread during nesting season. They take it & soak it in water, then feed it to the chicks to give them a drink. Cat biscuits are a good cheap way to feed them & their chicks too, again they'll dip it in water if its too dry, they're real smart & know what's best for them.
