I remember a story a friend told me about: she (a rather small female) was at a metal concert and there was this guy that was trying to dance with her, which she denied a couple of times. But the idiot was persistent, and getting more ruthless by the minute. At one point, a wall of death was formed right in front of them and at that point he physically attacked her, ripped off her shirt and pushed her right in the middle of the WoD as it's about to clash. She said she was panicking at that point, and understandably was trying to get rid of the arms that reached out to her, thinking she'd be molested. After a few seconds she realised tho, that the WoD had been stopped immediately, that the arms were there to hand her shirts so she could cover herself up and help we get back up. They got her out of the dangerzone, and asked her what happened. they asked her to point out the guy who did it, and three big and bulky guys went to... "have a serious talk with him". He wasn't spotted at the venue afterwards anymore. So yes, Metalheads are a big family, and if you cross that family, you're going to have a bad time.

There is also a famous story from Rock Am Ring. Must be around 2010, where a girl broke down in the middle of a mosh pit near the front stage but too far back that paramedics could easily reach her. The mosh pit stopped immediately after some people noticed her and everybody backed up to make room. Then she was moved to the front stage by pushing her over the heads by the whole crowd so paramedics could take over outside of the audience. This was amazing! And yes, she is fine :-)

Yep, Germany really is a Metalheads Paradise. In the US there's a few very big festivals, such as Woodstock or Coachella, but in Germany? Feels like there's another festival every weekend in Summer. First Weekend of August is the weekend for Metalheads Mekka, the Wacken Open Air Festival in Wacken, a small village in Schleswig Holstein. There's about 80.000 people there every year currently and it's sold out within less than 2 days after the las Wacken has ended. For the VERY dedicated ones there's Wacken Winter Nights - an open air festival in February. They even host Festivals on cruise ships, called Metal cruises. 2 weeks after Wacken there's Summerbreeze Festival in Dinkelsbühl, Bavaria. About the same size, just a little bit less known to the world. They often have a similar line up of bands, many bands even playing in both festivals. Then there's Rock am Ring, which has a bit less Metal, featuring many bands that are pretty famous. Other festivals are "With Full Force" (also Metal), "M'era Luna", Rock im Park and many more. Germany's a lot smaller than the US but we have more festivals in one Summer, than the US have in a few years. And they're rather peaceful, as everyone basically just wants to enjoy their favorite bands playing their favorite music. Metal festivals in Germany usually are the less violent festivals of all.

Yeah! And a very supportive one, where everyone accepts each others taste in music, as there are so many subgenres. And no one's left behind, especially in the pit. If you happen to trip and fall there, you'll be back on your feet within seconds, because everyone usually watches out for each other. Bands usually watch their fans as well. There's been cases where bands (for example Machine Head) stopped the song they were playing, just to make sure that someone who didn't get up after falling in the pit, was alright and got medical help if needed. So it's not just the audience but the bands as well. And as far as I could see from talking to band members, most of them are relaxed and kept their feet on the ground although being pretty successful.

Please nobody lynch me when I throw rock, metal, goth, and alternative rock/folk/etc into one pot for a second. Whether it was at Rammstein concerts, concerts of alternative rock bands, mediaeval rock like Corvus Corax, the metal/goth pub in my birth town - as a rather short woman I made the same experience over and over again: People care about each other. Strangers would shield me when I got too close to the moshpit. Was at a Nitrogods concert once with a group of friends, one of them wasn't that well (not really sick, just under the weather). Older rock/metalhead couples who stood in our proximity would come over and ask if everyone was okay, if the friend needed some water or aspirin or something. I'd go into the pub on my own sometimes for just an hour or two, have a beer, chat with random people (never sleazy), or just listen to the music. Never a problem. I'd go home and some biiig evil meeean looking biker-metal dudes would always ask if they should guide me to my car to make sure I'm safe. When I said I only live ten minutes away and would walk, there was always a group of guys, sometimes with their girls, that'd spontaneously come with me, to make sure I'll get home in one piece. Often, I didn't know these people. But that's the beautiful thing, I could 100% trust them. I'd never do this in any other kind of scene. Whether you're a hardcore metalhead or a black jeans, black T casual like I'm most of the time, we take care of each other. Oh, and if you need further proof that rock festivals often happen in small villages where you wouldn't expect it, look up Rock am Beckenrand. It offers a variety of different types of rock, has usually two known bands and many niche and newcomer bands. It's small but charming.

One of my favorite festival moments here in Germany was a small one called Break The Ground in 2013. I love Vader and they played Thursday night. Me and some friends went just for this night but it was cold and raining. Many people didnt show up. Maybe there was 200 people there. I had the time of my life!! And got one of Peter's guitar picks!! So, after having seen Vader headline the tent stage at Summerbreeze in front of thousands of people i then saw them at a small fest, in the rain to a small crowd! Such an awesome contrast!!

i dunno why i do it, but whenever i see some that looks like they cant handle the crowd suddenly moving (doesnt need to be a full moshpit) i somehow keep an eye on them. to be honest it kinda ruined one or two concerts for me as well.. but hell.. who wants to be in the position to read in newspapers the next day "small girl / skinny guy gets trampled on heavy metal concert" and you'd be like "fuck.. that chick/guy was like 2metres away.. could've pulled them out of the way".. it's like a reflex and hell.. i'm only 1,76m and not like THAT buff guy. i'm average but people should look out for each other every once in a while

that's why i love metal. it's not a scene..... IT'S A LIFESTYLE. You know how many times some guys i've never seen before have picked me back up when I fell down in the moshpit....lol quite a few. No. 1 rule of moshpit madness: When somebody falls, you pick them up. people just look out for eachother. Nice sideffect of metal: the Fantasy LARP scene in europe is literally a family get-together of metalers (from all over the world! i've seen americans at the bigger events here). Same principal... people look out for eachother even when purposely hitting other people with foam weaponry in game. XD

The situation: moshpit, circle. Someone screamed: oh no i lost my piercing! - everyone who heared it stopped, formed a circle inside and guarded it from people around, all eyes on the ground, one guy "found it" handed it over, everyone continued. The other day: one found a shoe. holding it up, screaming: who is missing a shoe? suddenly everyone took one of their shoes, holding it up... you know, the usually stuff. everyone giggles. Yes, german metalheads, those big ones who look like grizzly bears... are teddy bears. And you look like one too. i like you :) welcome to germany.

I think the "uptight german" thing is a difference in "entertainment mentality", for lack of a better word. What I mean by this: If you go to a stand up comedy show in the US, people are ready to laugh. They feel more like a part of the show, as in, if the audience is hyped and ready to laugh, it's gonna be a better show for everyone. In germany, it's more like "okay, I'm here, now let's see what you got. Make me laugh". More a mentality of expectation, whereas in the US it's more a mentality of participation if that makes sense. I think the same is true for concerts, regardless of the genre. Sure, if you go to a concert of a specific band you like, bought the tickets weeks ago, are excited to go there, people are more inclined to party from minute one; but if you go to a festival you're usually excited to see some, but not all of the bands and chances are you don't even know them all. Then you're partying for the bands you want to see, and you adopt this "let's see what you got" mentality for the other bands. Also, if you haven't already, check out Blind Guardian. You just can't talk about german Metal without them. If you ever get the chance, go see them live. I've seen hundreds of bands from all over the world in my life and Blind Guardian, are without a doubt, one of the greatest live acts in the world, period.

Well .. we talked, we drank but after an hour they went to sleep and I found out, their camp was on the other side of the festival. It took me four hours to get to my camp again. The walking in the mud took more time then usual, but I was invited to many other small camps to have a beer, some chat and checking if I was still on the right track. As a German metalhead, I love how you refer to most festivals being located in small villages. Wacken is actually a small village, too. But then, there's a flood of about 75,000 metalheads from all over the world coming for their 3-4 days of W:O:A. They made a documentary about it, titled "Full metal village", in which they show how the inhabitants (especially elders) react to the tsunami of metalheads rolling in every summer. They also take a look behind the scenes and show how the villagers participate in the festival. Also, there's a movie called "Wacken- der Film, to which I'll put the link right here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHTbYoiBmbmIrdE You can buy or lend it from KZbin if you want.

@@BlackAdder665 yes, especially hearing what some elders think metal was about. You hear that as a metalhead being like "Yep, I'm totally Satanist, burning churches etc." 🤣🤣🤣 Most are dealing well with it though. I just watched a 2014 movie called "Metalhead" about an Icelandic girl who turns into a full metalhead after her elder brother's death and whom people didn't accept for who she became. In the end, music is all that matters. Music and the attitude. Everyone should just accept each other and their preferences, which Wacken is the perfect place for.

I've been through many, many genres (and dedicated festivals) and besides reggea concerts where everyone is chill (due to certain reasons) there is nothing more relaxed, corteous and friendly than German Metal festivals. if you stumble in a mosh/circlepit, they stop everyone to not step on you and lift you up. If you don't want to stand in a WOD, they accompany you outa there. They seem dark and evil, but they're so lovely, respectful and fair. Even with officials. The police at Metal festivals is treated with respect and love and they treat the people back respectfully and friendly. This is an outstanding coherence which I missed a lot at pop/rock, electro and other festivals. My kids eventually will go on Metal festivals within the next 2 or 3 years and I will let them go without any doubt.

I actually live only about 10 kilometers away from Dinkelsbühl which is the location Summerbreeze is held at. It's funny, when you go shopping there at the time, you can still hear the music from really far away... And another nearby town, Feuchtwangen is now also holding a (much smaller) festival in autumn combined with their renaissance fair, mostly because they like competing against Dinkelsbühl. It's quite neat, been there twice so far (not been at the Breeze yet because just a little *too* big for my taste), they got a good selection of bands later in the evening.

I come from a small town in Baden-Württemberg, where we have our own little Metal Festival each summer. Although it's rather small, we've already had some awesome bands like Destruction, Pain, Visions of Atlantis, Pro Pain, Leaves Eyes just to mention a few. The music can be heard all over the place. You just have to open your window! Some people in my town like to complain, but most are rather tolerant. At the Festival you can see metalheads in full regalia, but also many ordinary people like me who don't consider themselves metalheads, but enjoy the music. I think, Metal is very mainstream and widely accepted here in Germany. You're not frowned upon if you confess your love for metal.

If you can try to check out the Metal Scene in the Ruhr Area, I think it's mostly in September. There are some fantastic city festivals in Bochum and Essen (Bochum Total and Essen original, are the names). All totally free and right in the city. The Turock Open Air is legendary. They get some huge bands there in one of the essential Metal scenes in Northrhein Westphalia. Rheinischer Platz in Essen. A whole Piazza dedicated to Heavy Metal. Good times.

The participation thing you mentioned, is something that I’ve experienced especially at my first concert I went to. It was a kvelertak show, and I went alone, since none of my friends had time or wanted to go. Normally I’m very shy around new people, but already in the waiting line I met some new people, and they asked me directly, if I wanted to have a beer with them, since they had some left from the drive there. Then, when we were in the venue, we started talking about the band, our favorite bands and sub genres, and they directly cracked jokes with me, as if we had been friends for years. At the time the singer came rushing on the stage, one of them realized that there was a mosh pit in the making, so he grabbed me by the shoulder and shoved me into it ! I’ve never had so much fun in my life ! And since it was my first concert, they really looked after me, making sure that I wasn’t alone in the pit, had someone accompany me when I got something to drink, and they even drove me home (turns out that we lived in the same general region of Germany). Best night of my life!

I went to the Party San Open Air (that you have also mentioned, in my opinion THE best festival Germany has to offer) completely alone as everyone else who would have went with me were busy. I got out of the car, unfolded my chair, ripped open a beer and then the neighbours already asked whether i was alone. Upon saying yes "right, come over to us, you are no longer alone". German metalhead girl here - actually, this family "adopted" me in my early teens, for it was the only community of people that would not be into bullying. About 15 years later now I can only be thankful for these guys - although I don't know them anymore. But this family is so huge, and you immediately get adopted in every new city. Not because of pity - but because of humanity! And - what I recognized as well (don't know if it's true for every community) - they don't push you into hard drugs (some other communities connected to some kind of music do). And that's what I really like - especially for teens who are still in the process of finding themselves! So then - welcome to this big ass family here! And don't be surprised, that there are dudes who want to share a drink with you - you seem a good guy, and we like to have drinks with good guys. Prost!

Which community is that and which kind of music?
@EveRoxAnne
@EveRoxAnne 4 жыл бұрын
@@jm-je4tl I really don't want to generalize here, be sure about that. Certainly, not all communities that listen to a certain kind of music push you into hard drugs! However, I experienced that MDMA, Speed, Cocaine (etc.) are more common in the communities of electronic music (Techno, Deep House...) than in Metal. If you're a responsible adult and decide to take those - go for it at your own risk. But when you're an adolescent, struggling with life in general, getting some "fast cures" like drugs that "make you happy" and you cannot yet estimate the consequences, could be crucial. Please note, I don't want to catastrophize a whole scene or community. Many, many people who are active in the electronic music scene are wonderful individuals :-)

I think one of the reason why they are so accepted is because they contrast with the Techno scene….You see the Love Parade (when it was still a thing) with all the drugs aso, and then you see by contrast Wacken, and it looks fairly tame if you compare it. I mean, yeah, the people look wild, but Wacken is well-organised and not known for anything overly excessive. And the WGT (not Metal, I know, but also a huge festival, and there is some overlap) involves whole families turning up, and the participants not just going to concert, but also taking the opportunity to watch events put on by the city of Leipzig itself. If you see the same people going to a ballet before partying through the night, it doesn't look that scary anymore. And I think this acceptance for the WGT community helped to make Metal more acceptable too.

Thats ok, I can understand why some people dont like Blind Guardian :) In the end Blind Guardian is a power metal band and that metal genre is only really popular in the EU anyway. So I do understand why it's not that well known/liked outside of the EU. Your video about german metal is really good tho, like all the videos you make. Its really funny to see your thoughts on the land I was born in. Glad you like it here. Btw, my beer recommendation is "Schlappeseppel Special". It has won several international beer awards and comes from my beautiful hometown of Aschaffenburg. As an Austrian living in Germany since a few years I totaly understand your "loosen up a bit at concerts"! It seems strange at first but I noticed that it depends on the Genre and Location/Region you're at. Also the "family feeling". I worked for 2 years in a Metal Bar in Austria and my mum was very concerned in the beginning. But after meeting some of the people (she would pick me up after the night shift because I haven't had a driving licence in the beginning) she stopped worring at all and preferred me going there (if I didn't have to work) instead of going into "regular" bars and clubs.

Thanks for your warm words. You pointed out, what you personally don´t like about german festival visitors. I am from Germany and I have started loving metal in 1980 with Maiden´s "The Number Of The Beast", followed by german metal band Accept´s first album. Many others followed. By now, it´s still the classic metal bands I love (btw: it´s HELLoween, not HelloWEEN), but my favourite today would be Dream Theater (feat. Portnoy). So now, at 52 years of age and being a teacher in real life, I don´t look like a metal head anymore and my leather jacket and my "Kutte" do not fit me anymore, because I have lost my skinniness over the years :D . If I would visit a festival, I would certainly stand there with my drink, soft-headbanging to the music - because that would be the reason for me to be there: not partying, not getting hammered, but seeing the bands live, enjoying the live and handmade music - and perhaps seeing a new band I hadn´t known before. I would love to talk to other people, getting to know them. But you certainly wouldn´t approve with my conservative hairstyle and with what I would be wearing, aging with dignity :D - I have experienced metal heads being the most tolerant people on this planet, so I doubt, I would get into trouble, but I certainly would get the looks, you are describing, even without a tie. And that´s why I do not go to festivals. Rock on, party on - and defend the faith! ^^

Hi, what you tell about metal music in Germany is very interesting. I’m not a metal head at all but the few times I went to a metal concert, I always got the feeling to be accepted and welcome - a great experience for a man who’s older than 60. You claim that it’s strange for you when there are people at a live performance, who are cool and don’t making party. Let me tell you a short story. Sometimes I’m organizing concerts in a small venue (just a hobby) and some years ago there was an Australian / US band named “Riddle and the Stars” and the audience was very quiet when they played. After some time the bass player / singer Tracy said: “You are so quite when we play - it’s so strange for me and makes me a little bit nervous - I’ve never seen anything like this before”. One auf the audience answered: “Oh, we like and enjoy your music and performance, for this reason we listen very careful”. As a musician you can’t get a bigger compliment - can you? Think it’s a specialty of German culture. Even today many people like to go to classical concerts - just to listen and enjoy the music. I hope my comment can turn your frustration to better understanding. By the way - I like and enjoy your videos very much!
