Thanks you for your kind compliments and also for watching. Glad you enjoyed, TDK, Sony and Maxell cassettes from the mid 80s to 1990 never fail to fascinate me as the engineering was so damn good!

Yes the TDK- SA and SA-X where my favorite type of tapes. They had the best balance between cost and sound quality. I still have a lot of those 1988 style tapes and a few of the older and newer types as well.

In my younger days, all I bought was TDK SA 90 cassettes. I've never tried the TDK SA-X. I was happy enough with the TDK SA 90's and I didn't want to spend extra. If I had a top of the line cassette deck, maybe i would have tried them. I still use good tape decks or better, so TDK SA works well. Now since I'm sending some people tapes as gifts, I'm using the available new TDK D series. On their regular tape players, they'll still have good quality tapes and not need type II tapes that I save for myself.

Thanks for the cool video!!! In terms of style, I prefer the black mid 80s Version of SA and SA-X. P.S. : It's Super Avilyn not Super Avinyl :)

I only have a couple of SA-X cassettes. One is an 85-86 that looks like an all Gold version of the SA you have at 1:40, quite a rare tape I think! Love the look of those '88 SA-X's - never had one myself.

The overengineering that went into TDK cassettes was insane. High quality just like Sony and Maxell at the time. Quality took a dive in the early 90s!

I know you did this video awhile ago . However, you did a fine job sir. Audio format from a better time. At least audio wise.👍👍

The first TDK SA was the best . I Miss the '79 till '81 version . I think it had the nicest card , designwise together with the wonderful TDK OD . The '88 version and '84 version are the most common .. If you recorded too many times on the same cassette , the sound became crumbly Even with well aligned clean heads on Hi End decks Maxell was smoother and had less of that problem Sometimes the edges of the tape got a bit jagged and knurled Maxell tapes never did .. I like Hitachi tapes , Same as maxell but more beautiful and rare these days :)

Yeah the TDK-SA might have had a bit more 'drop-out' issues than Maxell. But on my deck (Denon DR-M34HR) the Maxell XL-II tapes didn't perform as well on high-frequencies than the TDK-SA / SA-X tapes did.

If the tape gets crumbled, the transport alignment is off and needs re-alignment. Especially head tilt (not azimuth) can force the tape along the sharp edges of the tape guide behind the PB head which will destroy the tapes on the side. If the tape gets mangled as a whole, there is probably something wrong with the tension between either the dual capstans or the transport capstan and the pickup reel. Either of these problems needs fixing with special test cassettes. Another reason for mangled tapes can be worn-out pinch rollers. There is a multitude of things that can go wrong with cassettes and tape decks, unfortunately.
