I’ve found that in general, despite any drawbacks, any portable version of a JRPG will get more play time from me than a version on a standard console or pc. After finishing dq11 on switch, I just started buying/playing all the DQ games on Nintendo handhelds. It’s great.

Hey Ross, thanks for watching and commenting! You're totally right it's much easier to put time into a game you can take anywhere than being stuck to one room and TV. Super convenient that basically the whole series is available on portable consoles now with the exception of 10. Hope to see you back on the channel in the future!

The whole point of the style of the modern Dragon Quest localizations is to give a similar tonal feeling to Western audiences what Japanese audiences experience. Remember, localization isn't just translation, it's also adapting the material to better fit with the target audience and to ensure that they share a experience on par with what the original audience got. Ace Attorney is the best example of this. Pretty much everyone's names in the series is a pun in the original Japanese script, which is why the localization team followed suit. Without things like these, a lot of translated games could end up being really bland.
@KreativeGames
@KreativeGames 4 жыл бұрын
I totally agree! Personally having played both versions of the game and I prefer the original translation and tone of the PS1 version. So is this a remake of the US PS1 version or a port of the Japanese 3DS remake? It's both I suppose, but many find the 3DS script has lost much of what US fans of the PS1 original will be nostalgic for. A localization team could be in charge or translating the writers intent, or they could be in charge of updating for a new audience, or they could be given creative liberties to go any other direction. None are right, none are wrong, all have value, and I guess we should be thankful we have some of each!

I think the 3DS version is far superior to the PSX, which was just tedious for the sake of being time-consuming.
@ScarletDeclan
@ScarletDeclan 6 жыл бұрын
ArcadianGenesis you clearly didn't understand the original. it is long because they are showing the extent of the demon lord's powers. it builds him up more each time. and instead of just having a guy in a village say "a long time ago everyone was turned into animals in this village" we go to the village a long time ago and see them all as animals and save them. also you get to see the effect you have on the present while technically you're the hero of the past. so for most places you are not praised endlessly but instead treated like a normal human which i find more fun

Where did you hear that? That's a myth that somehow still survives to this day. I've played most of the series in Japanese (except 7 and beyond, I can't find the time for it) and they didn't have nearly as many puns as the localized versions. Not even the remakes. Spell names are mostly nonsense words with a few of them actually named after onomatopoeias. Puns are few and far between and only appear in appropiate places. And "accents" as we know them are not present either. The modern localizations turn absolutely everything into a pun, including NPC names and town names, making the whole journey feel like a joke, ruining serious moments and straining suspension of disbelief. That's an invention of the localization team and practically a rewrite of the original script. It's NOT faithful to the original games or carrying on their spirit at all. It's OK if you like the puns and accents, but they are basically parody rewrites and it's sad that DQ can't get proper English translations. It doesn't really affect me since I can play the original versions, but it's annoying when you can't discuss the series with English speakers without the stupid puns and accents being brought up. It's sad that my favorite videogame series is viewed as some sort of joke or parody of RPGs outside Japan. I also think it's part of the reason the series doesn't do well over here. They seem to think that their "funny" localizations are responsible for the relative success of DQ8, so they keep rewriting the original text to make jokes and forcing puns where the original didn't have any. There are people that enjoy that stuff, but it makes the series look like a complete joke. I think DQ would have a much bigger fandom outside Japan if they just did REAL localizations without rewriting 90% of the text. The games are amazing and already have enough humor, personality and charm (the perfect balance, in fact) without the localization team turning it into a ridiculous parody of itself.
@Morgil27
@Morgil27 6 жыл бұрын
I only just skimmed through that long-ass post, but I still don't think you're right on a few things. One of the big reasons Dragon Quest is so big in Japan is cuz, unlike other RPGs like Final Fantasy or the like, it doesn't take things so seriously. You may not believe it, but it is a mostly light-hearted series. Hell, if you want proof, just look at the infamous and juvenile "Puff Puff" joke that has appeared in almost every game so far. Or what about the silly slime character that is literally the series' mascot. If you really think the series is "serious" and "epic" in the Japanese version, then you really don't get it. You also clearly don't get the difference between translation and localization. With most any game, especially ones like these, a straight-up, word for word translation would never work. Way too much would be lost. The whole point of localization with any foreign media is to make sure the spirit _and_ meaning of the original gets across in the target language, and even if you don't believe so, that is what they are doing. Also, one last thing: The localization team isn't just a bunch of a-holes in an office in the US somewhere making changes left and right based on their own whims. The localization teams work hand in hand with the Japanese developers, and every localization decision and change they make has to be approved by Yuji Horii himself.

@@eleven9286 hey Eleven thanks for watching. That is what I understand from reliable sources as well, that the punny translations are more true to the Japanese source material. I don't speak/read Japanese though so I can't 100% verify it. If memory serves earning job points got annoying I know it does in some Dragon Quest games and I think VII was among them. The games in question prevent you from earning job points if the game decides your level is too high. IMO you should earn at least one job point per battle no matter what your level is. I remember one time, and I'm pretty sure it was the 3DS version of VII where I had a huge problem earning job points when I first had access to the job system even though I hadn't done much grinding. (I think I had stopped to grind for gold around one village prior to that point and maybe some grinding at the game's beginning)

That is a great question! And the answer is unfortunately no BUT there is a silver lining. The 3DS version, unlike the PS1, changes your appearance based on your class, so there is quite a bit a variety still for that being that there are so many classes. Also in battle the weapon and shield you equip are represented visually, providing more graphical variety.

Also...dead wrong. The Tokyo Symphony Orchestra rendition was used for the Japanese release. The release we received is a 32-bit synth/midi version. It sounds great, sure, but it's not the orchestral recording. Compare your copy to the actual Tokyo Symphony renditions of the same tracks. Your complaints make absolutely no sense. Did you pay attention to the game at all? The Camera is completely different, the towns were redesigned, the dungeons had several overhauls with a few exceptions, there are far more changes just aesthetically between 7 3DS and 7 PSX than between any other DQ remake, including DQ3 SFC from the NES game. Even gameplay had more drastic alterations, including drastic changes to equipment effects, something no DQ remake has done before or since, as they always just add to what was already present, in this case they rebalanced quite a few pieces of gear. Mostly armour resistances, but also how certain affects work, such as how the duplic hat works. The second cast is randomly selected, so it isn't wasted if it's a single-target buff. You're foolish for not using the 3D. It's easily one of the top 10 3DS games when it comes to the quality of the 3D engine, and how cleanly it comes off, especially in battles. You really should give it a shot before dismissing it. Textures are some of the best the 3DS has to offer. Actually look for a time at the frescoes, the walls, the individual tiles and minor details in the castles. I'll agree with the overworld, but the textures are based on the amount of data being loaded at once, nothing more, though it should have had not so much textures as shape. Rolling hills would have been nice. Small variety of tactics...are you serious? You call yourself a gamer and a DQ fan? Look, Dragon Quest games aren't like FF games, they don't tell you the layers of complexity up front. Not even DQ9 discussed the number of elements you could compound to achieve maximum damage. DQ7 has quite a few layers to it, with the exception of magic as it lacks wisdom scaling, something that should have been added given 8 and 9, though with the tablet creation system, you can get yourself a duplic hat fairly quickly and early, when it would count and offer more options in that territory. However you have things like Focus and Muster Strength. Where both last only 1 round, and offer a 2~2.5 bonus to physical damage and certain physical attack skills. Some skills utilize it some do not. Focus also has a secondary attribute: perfect hit, as in it ignores evasion. Not all skills that utilize Focus/Muster will even use the Perfect Hit attribute, and some will ONLY use Focus' perfect hit (Sword Dance). It's the basis for Tension boosting in 8 and 9, which was reworked into "Zone" called "Pep" in the international DQ11 localization. Then there's Oomph and Oomph + Focus / Muster. Then you have weapon attributes like paralysis or trailing damage to also factor into your attack options. Then how certain skills will ignore weapon attributes, but use Oomph, or only Focus/Muster, or all three. Granted it's less complex given only the first hit of a multi-hit attack can be boosted, but there are still a plethora of options. Then you have the level-based skills, which deal damage depending on your level, which come in two variety of elements: Summon and Woosh. Thin Air and Wind Sickles are Woosh property, while Lampede, Call Army, and Call of the Wild are Summon skills. The two spells for summoning in helpers, Summon and That Special Summon do not qualify as the Summon property as they're not attack skills, they just summon in an ally, and the skills of that ally have the same general properties that they have if your party uses them. Other details like Blade of Ultimate Power ignores defense in this version, and does fixed damage. Or that a low level game can make great usage of Puff! and Megamorphosis as they have fixed stat values once changed, which can output more...though mostly it's in fun than anything else. Or there's Zombiesbane and Dragonsbane, and how certain skills do strangely make usage of their special properties. Like Sword Dance and Multifists, or Multislice and Roundhouse Kick, but not Muscle Dance or Knuckle Sandwich. DQ7's options are like an onion, and yes, I'm intentionally using a Shrek reference. It's layered. It is a guide-dang-it but it isn't that hard to figure some things out, or that your attack options are more complex than you're making it out to be. Then you have the DLC tablets, which you failed to even touch upon...and sadly too, as it adds a world of depth, from broken elements to a ton of late-game fun. They're rather cleverly done, short, and simple, and the rewards well worth the effort. Then there's the hidden Super Kiefer stat growth, where Kiefer gets exactly 660 Resilience at level 50. Always, no deviance. From there it's normal growth again. Then there's the fact that DQ7 3DS has dynamic stat growth while the PSX has static stat growth. Then you missed out on the puzzles, of which the PSX has a lot more, while the 3DS has quite a few removed, and not just the beginning puzzles (like the two maze rooms in the final dungeon of the PSX version, and even the wind maze Multipleximus Maximus was simplified and shortened). However, strangely the 3DS version has one altered puzzle that was actually enhanced. El Pomposo's tower in the present day has a room with 4 dummies and 4 switches, but in the PSX version it's a spinning simple maze room...very simple maze that's very easy to get through. Sadly that's the only improvement. You also skipped out on the story DLC, of which admittedly there's only 3 tiles, and one has a cliffhanger end that suggests it's unfinished. However the game itself was clearly rushed in a lot of ways. Like the removal of certain skills that are highly useful in this environment. Padfoot being the most glaring example, as reducing enemy encounter rates would have helped. You also barely touched on the fact you can tame monsters early game instead of waiting for Nottagen/Loomin, and with that, earn monster hearts. Plus monsters in tablets, whether haven gifts, 24-hour share rewards, or ones you make yourself will have double the heart drop rates, and you can even use the tablet system to fill out the monster book, and through it access harder monsters with good drops early...and with this I repeat: Duplic Hat. Definitely one of my favourites in the series. Seriously dude, you clearly don't know much about how this game operates. Did you even know most classes, especially human have passive bonuses, such as Dancer's bonus evasion, Thief's auto-steal, and Martial Artist's critical hit bonus? That monster classes all have passive resistances, and different from their actual monster counterparts (often better)? That intermediate and advanced human classes also have some resistances?

Hi Alexander! Thanks for watching and for commenting. I appreciate you taking the time and I respect your opinions and obvious passion for the Dragon Quest series. The criticisms (and praises) I have for this game and any game should be taken with a grain of salt, I understand that not everyone is going to agree with me, and believe me I get comments from people that disagree with me ALL the time. All I can try to do is provide feedback about the game as close to objectively as possible and make a recommendation for who I think would enjoy it, hoping that my opinion will help the average viewer decide for themselves if they want to invest their valuable time on a game or not, while being thankful that they spend some of that valuable time watching my video(s) as well. I think that is both the beauty and the terror of the world wide web and of KZbin: anyone can upload, and anyone can comment, both positively and negatively. If anyone has counter-opinions about something they are free to upload their own video(s) with their own point of view. I also noticed you brought up a few items that may have been misinterpreted or incorrect from the video and I just want you to know that I'm doing the best I can with the time that I have for the channel. Video games are a huge passion of mine but please keep in mind that games and this channel are strictly my hobby and that the majority of my life is dedicated to my full-time (non-video-game-related) career, my family, health, home, etc. I invest many hours to research but there is always more and at some point I have to move on to the equally time-consuming processes of capturing game footage, writing the script, recording the voice over, gathering supporting materials, and editing the sound and video, Also I must preparing it for KZbin in a format that is accessible and easy to digest for the average viewer, and in doing so I have to make decisions about what to include and what to cut based on what I think people would find interesting, what is too much detail, and manage the length of the video for a variety of reasons, but please know that I never knowingly publish or exclude anything that I feel doesn't have sufficient support from the research I do. All that being said, I took the time to write this because I could tell you put a lot of time into your comments and I really do appreciate that! Even if we disagree on certain aspects of games I respect your opinion and your passion for games! I hope that you will continue to watch and subscribe and be a part of the community here at Keller Kreative Games. Thank you Alexander!

I actually have to apologize. I don't know, something about your presentation, or maybe it was a bad day, but something really set me off a bit. Whatever it is, in watching again I'm not bothered anymore, so maybe something else in my day I didn't deal with. So apologies if I came off too harsh. I did sub though, and yes I do understand that research takes enormous time, and even amongst the DQ community, many know-it-all's like myself (intended to be a self-flagellation) makes mistakes or rumours or information can be scarce at times. In anycase, I do think it's good to support DQ fan channels, and I really appreciate your thoughtful response, and in taking my aggressive mannerism with poise and dignity. That definitely earns my respect. Cheers.

So which version is the preferred/best version to play? I was playing through the PSX version and really enjoyed it. Should I continue that version or just move on to the seemingly glorious 3DS version?
@KreativeGames
@KreativeGames 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam and thanks for watching! That is a really tough question. Personally I slightly prefer the 3DS version due to it's portability and being less "grindy." But I prefer the pixel art of the PSX version's visuals and also prefer the PlayStation's translation/script. That being said you'll have to decide what features matter most to you and follow your intuition. If you have any other questions I would love to help out or provide an opinion. If they would have made the original version playable on the 3DS game, that would have been ideal!

I imported the PS1 version back in the day from the US (it never released here in Europe). I didn’t know much about the series as it never had come out here but i was expecting something like Final Fantasy but I was very confused and it felt dates even back then compared to the FF games. I only played a couple of hours and eventually sold the game. I’m interested in the 3DS version though. Maybe it would suit me more.

3DS is a bit much longer because DQVII is suppose to be long however if you're tired of finding shards which are now called fragments in 3DS. There is a guide that helps you from the ruins helps out the fragments. However there's some changes that are good and aren't good. I mentioned down below that both versions aren't Definitive so you might not enjoy it if it starts dragging on too much since it's a long game. I am really hoping for another remake of DQVII and better version with a kazoom spell because both versions never had that concept then Dragon Quest VI. 😑

This game looks like what it would have been had it been released on the N64. I like that they gave Gabo a wolf to symbolize that he is still an actual wolf, in the guise of boy.

I was thinking Dreamcast myself. It's funny you mention that Gabo/Ruff has a wolf now...I always wonder, where did that wolf come from? Since Gabo was a wolf and turned into a boy.

I like long games, but I don’t like long winded games. I love the Tales series and most of the old FFs excepting 8. DQ7 is my second DQ after the original on NES and has been a massive disappointment. I’m almost 10 hours in and am quitting after learning (from people I should have spoken too before I purchased it) that it will be another 10 hours before it will become even slightly challenging/interesting. If you’re unemployed and only have one game I guess DQ7 is better than watching TV, but I’d rather play any other game than this one at this point. I’m going to try DQ3 after learning it actually offers some challenge.

It was ok could have been better! Like you said the camera angle gets really annoying after playing for hours! Could have more characters with better jobs! Also after you finally finish putting all of the pieces of the island puzzles together the Guardian does not help you to get to the final boss! I thought that he was completely useless throu out the entire game!

I'm about 65 hours into this. I never played the original PS1 version, but I have to say, if they streamlined some things, that's just fine because HOLY MOTHER OF THE ALMIGHTY this bitch is looooooooong. 65 hours in and I feel like I've barely began. That said, I think you're overly harsh on the game. The length is the only thing I really take issue with and the way the story unfolds a bit too slowly and cryptically, but otherwise I think it's pretty fantastic. I'm gonna consider this the definitive version of the game because quite frankly if I tried to play it through twice I might just die of old age before completing the second playthrough. I'll comment again after I defeat Orgodemir 6 months from now.

Hey Jacob thanks for watching and commenting. Consider my harshness more constructive criticism than being harsh, I love this game, but I need to find opportunities for improvement to bring some conflict into the video to make it more interesting as well as appealing to people who are not already DQ fans. I'm looking forward to hearing from you after you beat the game in half a year! :D

Dated visuals? Pfft, they look fine to me. If you want an example of a handheld port with terrible 3D visuals, just look at Persona 3 Portable. The graphics took a _massive_ downgrade from the original PS2 version, and I don't understand why. The PSP was capable of much better, Crisis Core is a testament to that.

I didn't get it because it didn't have that good lift a pot/barrel and throw it feel as well as the Zoom in and out as well as Gabo as well as the puzzles at the beginning as well as last but not least the Translation. Dragon Warrior VII on PSX all the way till fix. Still no Definitive Edition version, shame. Oh by the way the last Dragon Quest game to have the lift and throw pots/barrels is Dragon Quest V on PS2 which was released only in Japan. Though the Fan Translation is in fact of that version is similarly close to the DS which surprises me in a good way.
