Latvia has a sizeable Russian speaking minority -- a legacy of the time when Latvia was part of the Soviet Union. They have been a target of the Kremlin's propaganda machine in a bid to undermine support for Ukraine. Our reporter Killian Bayer visited a town close to the Russian border to see what impact Kremlin propaganda is having.

One big problem with the former Soviet Russians who remained in Latvia after Latvia regained its rightful independence from the USSR is that they have been spectacularly maladaptive. There are people born in Latvia to those families, who have lived more than forty years of their lives in Latvia and, yet, can't speak a single word of Latvian. Not one word. Can you imagine being born, raised, and educated in, for example, the United States or the UK and not being able to speak a single word of English? It's a phenomenon that indicates a very special kind of ignorance. Those people believe everything they are told by Russian State Media without question. If Putin's TV told them that Latvia had a secret plot to irradiate all Russians in eastern Latvia and then feed their children to sharks, they'd believe ALL of it. It's very difficult to integrate people whose brains work in that way.

That's a question latvians often ask as well. Short answer is russians think they own us. Very many russians consider latvians as lesser humans, as something they own, they still call our native language as "dog" language, they basically don't see as equals. Their stance is very agressive, entitled. The older generations teach this same mindset to their children and grandchildren. They go around saying that we don't matter, that our language doesn't matter + internet comments are a total cess pit of hate and propoganda. Even in daily life it's not hard to find very entitled, xenofobic russians acting out for the dumbest things, for instance, you saying "good day" to them in latvian in a medical facility.

Why do you compare the present Russian Federation with the former USSR which was dibanded in 1991? Go there and see for yourself. I live in Germany and our enemies are those countries who force us to partake on backfiring sanctions destroying over 30 yrs. of trade in Pharmaceuticals, Siemens, Mercedes, BMW, Merck, BASF, Bayer, etc. Not to mention the sabotaging of energy LNG "Nordstream Pipelines!" The NSDAP never freed any country from Russia. If it weren´t for Russia ... Estonia and Latvia wouldn´t exist today!

Latvia and the Baltic countries seems to be very nationalist after having been under foreign occupation and seeing what war, communism and slow ideological takeovers of society can do. They're doing what it takes to protect their peace, their traditions and their cultural heritage from anyone who tries to steal or get rid of it. The more western and northern european countries could learn a lot from them.

It is not necessary to dramatize the "communist times" in Latvia so much. In fact, under the USSR, factories that produced cars, electric trains and wagons, electronic equipment and a lot of agricultural products worked in Latvia. The Riga Film Studio produced films and TV series. Now "independent Latvia" produces nothing but prostitution for the NATO military and some food. Everything there was closed and died.
