I’m rewatching the BBC’s “Wolf Hall” and I’m struck now by how much Vlad’s description of Kremlin politics resembles the workings of Henry the Eighth’s court, where conspiracies are hatched with a nod of the head and concluded with a self-satisfied smile, where every relationship is tentative, and where climbing the ladder to success means you knock off competitors as you work your way up - until they succeed in hurling you back down.👑

The last few ‘1420’ segments actually had people pointing out things are not good, “we had our chance in the ‘90’s”, and ‘Putin has been around so long, I have nothing to compare it to.’ A few even said - and most imply - that the real fear is that they don’t know what comes next.

1420 answers largely depend on the location (city vs village) and age (younger vs older). It's a very important insider evidence, but shouldn't be taken for a proper sociological study. At least definitely not a quantative study, on basis of which we can see shifts and developments in public opinion. It's not critique if their work, just a comment on how it can be used.

Good Afternoon from the American Southwest. You are looking a lot better than from yesterday. From my perspective Donald Trump was and still is a great danger to the American Experiment in Democracy. Donald Trump has released something into our politics that has taken on a life of its own that is rather poisonous and we still don't know how to deal with it. My sense about the so called blob in the middle "without opinions" in Russia because is or was and now again dangerous to have strong political opinions as you never know when the police will break down your door in the middle of the night over something you said. Besides said Russians have to worry about keeping employed, so they can keep paying their bills, educate their children, etc., etc. A person only has so much energy in a day. I wouldn't last very long in Russia. I think the USA should provide Ukraine additional long range artillery equipment with lots of ammunition as fast as possible. I currently view the current Russia leadership as a great danger to the World. Thank you for the education you are providing. --

@VladVexlerChat Once Russia is destroyed there will be no further point to NATO. Once American packs up and leaves Europeans can return to their thousand year old penchant for killing each other can resume. Europe has been irrelevant for a long time, they just don't know it but they are beginning to wake up to it. They hate America and they hate each other. By the way we in the United States were taught before left wing loony radicals began rewriting the textbooks what political democracy is. I therefore concluded that there are no real democracies in Europe. Britain is the furthest thing from democracy I can imagine. I look forward to its final demise. I'll say it again, the British Empire was the most heinous criminal enterprise in the history of the world.

When you mentioned the de-politicized "blob", I thought of certain Russian KZbinrs who have lost my interest because of that, and also some of my own friends. Here in the U.S., however, we are polarized and divided with such strong opinions that we are in a very volatile state right now, and I guess maybe that's good in a way because at least few people are those "blobs"! I am nearly always informed by and/or agreeing with you, Vlad, but with the perspective of a retired US Government civil servant, I have to say that Trump's complacency regarding massive Russian hacking of official US systems in late 2020 and willingness to blame the Chinese instead, sans evidence, for what had quickly been identified as Russian-sourced activity was beyond baffling. I think you would be hard-pressed to find anyone directly involved in that particular situation near the end of the Trump presidency who thought that Russian activities were not given the most remarkable free pass ever witnessed, to the point of Secretary of State Pompeo publicly differing with Trump's narrative and the normally supportive Forbes Magazine questioning why Trump would not even criticize Russia over it by late December of 2020. He had also denied that Russia had been the source of campaign hacking and interference in 2016 before finally admitting it was true the next year. I would be shocked if the Kremlin, openly or secretly, did not find it most advantageous if they could have Trump in office if they believe there is any hope of similar access and manner of handling it from him in his next administration.

I'm not sure how to exactly frame this in a question Vlad , but I've started to question where the general population & body politic of Russia is today. You often along with a few others talk about that depoliticised blob in the middle. I'm starting to wonder if there's not something deeper under the skin in Russia we've been missing?. For nearly a year now I've been following a vlog called 1420. Danill who's channel it is goes out mostly on the streets of Moscow but also goes deep into rural Russia as well & interviews people often asking very provocative questions staying just under the threshold of getting himself arrested. Danill's interviews clearly reaffirm the strongly depoliticised center. However I've recently started following another channel called, HEADSHOT. They do much the same though ask very different questions. Often seemingly none political in nature. They get very different responses. This morning they were in a rural town & asked lots of questions about the poor quality of local infrastructure such as roads, lack of reliable water supplies, no gas supplies etc. I didn't keep exact count, but my best recollection was 8 out of 10 people blame the government and even Putin himself for their greed, corruption and total disregard for the state of things & people. One question decidedly political in nature and they'll tell you " I'm not political & unqualified to answer!". Ask the same people a question seemingly none political ( we know there's a political dimension in everything) and it's clear they see right through the fog and know exactly what's wrong and who's to blame. What is it that I'm missing and or not understanding about Russian mentality?.

Over the years I've tried to read "great" Russian literature. Just tried again with "The Cancer Ward". Hi Vlad, a rather polit-philosophy question today for you. What do you feel about the concept of 'political polarization', does it exist for you? How do you access its pretexts and consequences, does it stems from (or leads to, I guess) de-politicization? Or is it product of over-politicization (if it exists), by the way is it theoretically possible to 'over-politicize' any issues? Thanks
@VladVexlerChat
@VladVexlerChat Жыл бұрын
Yes we are facing a crisis of polarisation in much of the West. The story underneath the polarisation is democratic decline. The story underneath the democratic decline is loss of trust. The story underneath the loss of trust is about how democracy always needs new solutions to sustain itself - and tragically, how it is an illusion to think that such solutions are always available. Much more on this to come on both channels.

This is a very good question. We made politics a part of our culture and this on the one side is a very good thing, but on the other hand it resulted in what you are describing: The politicization of discussions that should not be politicized. Because politics have a different dynamic than cultural discussions. The same happens when you let courts decide about cultural discussions. In court and politics there is a winner and a loser and this is not how cultural discussions work that are far more fluid. Sorry, just a thought.

The whole idea of democracy is that an elected leader cannot do much. Too much would be too harmful at any rate. Besides that, the amount of time Putin had did not translate into a better position or situation for Russia itself. Nations develop in spite of their politicians. Nations are developed by their citizens. They make a country thrive.

The apathetic blob of Russian politics reminds me of how I myself and many others around me treated the Vietnam war in the USA in the 1970s. My friends and I were right on the cusp of being mobilized when the war finally ended, so we should have been far more engaged. Politics was boring. We had our lives. And it was too grim to think about. It was not a case of being neutral about the war, we wanted the USA to get out of Vietnam, it was about pushing the war into a corner and not thinking about it.

So I would posit that because that depoliticized middle would be extremely uncomfortable with admitting they have any ethical responsibility towards Ukraine their 'awakening' will instead be tied to a doubling down on Russian patriotism and desperate need for 'victory', because the alternative has now become unthinkable. The Kremlin, at least, has been too good at spelling out to them what that would entail.

Fruit basket means bonkers in english.. so it doesn't really what sort of fruitiness is contained if you already accept that the entire basket is a bit wonk. Arguably some fruit baskets are just too big, they contain too many fruits and this causes some issues. If you put straight brexit bananas in a fruit basket the fruitiness soon turns into a fast ripening of the other fruits, and some even go rotten. The fruit basket needs to be of a good manageable size, and you have to make sure the really ripe bananas are kept apart.

As always thank you Vlad for your insights. But i have something to say about your last comment in this piece. I think, that the depoliticized blob in the middle could negate their responibility for the kremlins actions on the basis, that they feel, that they don't have and never had any real means to influence that alien entity that is their regime. They therfor couldn"t outsource their politics in the first place, since it never was in their power to relinquish it. So after a regime change or change of direction in Russia, they wouldn't feel responsible for the kremlins doings. In that point of view, they were victims as well. Certainly as a non-russian, non-eastern-european, my thinking could be wrong here.

Still a glaring omission in all these discussions is of the Minsk Agreements and true balance of the on-the-ground situation in Donbas over the last decade. I feel that huge part of Russian opposition repeats the same mistake as russian society made as whole. That mistake is a believe that coordination of efforts is achievable only through unified point of view on everything. Political activists and organizations CAN work together on some common task even if they don't entirely agree on others points. It does not mean that they should not question each other, but that should not become a impenetrable ideological walls. I think Katz is one the first who finally got to the idea (He had his fair share of reputation wars in past). Let's hope that it will work out and not some other disaster will destroy all progress again.

@@user-zr9pe4bo7e Well, issue is standing for a long time. it was REALLY hard to argue with people in 2012-2015 (I, too, started to realize how bad the situation was a little too late) when the main image of the opposition people had was a bunch of entitled intellectuals and arrogant politicians who constantly squabble with each other and could not agree on anything. Many, even if they agree on ALL current and potential issues of autocracy just didn't see any alternative. It begun to change gradually but too late and basically political maturity of Russian opposition was falling right behind the Putin's curve of repression.

Hello Mr Vexlar, as an extension to your thoughts on the Russian opposition, what you make of the Congress of Free Russia? Is this a good, constructive umbrella to allow dialogue and the seed of something for the future? Is it sufficiently inclusive of different voices?

@@ianlighting100 Kasparov and Khodorovsky are not politicians, they are only known in the West, mostly in the English speaking world, they are rich and live in NY or London and they will never go back to Russia, they only talk about Russia on CNN when they need publicity for the sales of their books, it confirms what I tried to say, that our friend Vlad is completely ignoring real Russian politicians who have moved only a few miles away from the Russian border-most of them are in the neighbour countries, the Baltics, Poland and Ukraine, and they are in active contact with people inside Russia and are planning a change in Russian politics after the Putin regime has fallen

12:07 IMO people are mistakenly trying to view Russia through the lens of a modern, democratic, Republic when it should be viewed through the lens of the late Roman Republic, also democratic and a Republic, or maybe even the Eastern Roman/Byzantine Empire. When viewed through such a lens Russia’s ‘Special Operation’ wouldn’t have been surprising at all, in fact seems almost a “no brainer” in spite of the best guesses of European intelligentsia who said Russia dare not invade. 🤷🏻‍♂️
@adarret

@Валера My point exactly, Russia is an Empire and Putin is it’s Caesar. Still many paint Russia as Democratic just because it may have elected it’s Legislators, who are ultimately just glorified bureaucrats helping rule, not much different than with Romans…

Just a random thought. From a linguistic point of view, would it be any more difficult to explain the crucial distinction between guilt by association and responsibility by association in Russian than it is in English? I think for a lot of people, the difference between the two concepts seems quite subtle and tricky to grasp, important as it is. So I'm just curious about whether it's just as easy (or difficult) to express in both languages.
@VladVexlerChat
@VladVexlerChat Жыл бұрын
In my view it’s roughly the same. Moreover, I think the conceptual space for the difference is pretty cross culturally available. I am not guilty of my sister robs a bank, but would I feel ethically part of it? Yes I would. Ethical implication by association. That pluralisation of ethical involvement is inevitable.

This is extremely interesting. I've had university and graduate classes with Eastern European professors and colleagues [apologies to Slovaks and Poles if they consider themselves Central Europeans], and really haven't understood, until the information presented here, the relationships among the Russian regime, the Russian opposition and, especially, the expat Russians. I am still not entirely clear about it, as I have a somewhat typical American attitude [though more accommodating to shades of gray than usual]. To me it seems that the Russian people are, as always, separate from the Russian Ruling circles. The Regime behaves like the Mongols, raping, torturing, killing and destroying towns, while the people try to be uninvolved with it. So, are the Mongols, under Great Khan Putin, still in charge, and the peasantry still avoiding revolting against the alien occupiers?

The idea of Britain or any other country manufacturing armaments in Ukraine is nonsense given the state of Ukrainian infrastructure at the moment and would also present Russia with sweet propaganda targets, it would require NATO boots on the ground and the imposition of a no fly zone. Just keep sending them from outside it’s working, the Telegraph article is totally for home consumption.

Trump’s toughness: the “experts” who say Trump was tough on Russia are simply wrong. Trump is not a Putin protégé because I do not like him. It is because he frankly and demonstrably is. It baffles me that you fail to see this, but from across the pond, without understanding the internet-technical side of this or Trump’s detailed background, perhaps it’s not important enough a thing to merit deep research. One hopes we won’t have Trump to kick around again, in any case. That aside, lovely video.

Except you’re wrong. The Trump Administration imposed more sanctions on Russia, created the Space Force, killed hundreds of Russian Wagner Mercenaries in Syria, pulled out of the Iran deal which Putin helped negotiate and supported, sent Javelins to Ukraine, etc. Trump also says he threatened to bomb Moscow if Putin ever invaded Ukraine. Trump was a wild card which is why the Russians did not invade Ukraine during the tenure of a supposedly pro-Russia president. But Putin did start amassing troops around Ukraine’s borders a few months after Joe Biden assumed office.

@@MC0222 I'm well aware of the arguments people make, which tend to be more factual than fantasies about killing Wagner thugs in Syria. If having a puppet in the White House suits American interests, I fail to see how. I did not say Trump did nothing one can put on the ledger as "tough" on Russia. Everything Trump did in this regard was done (a) in consultation with the Kremlin, (b) done for political expediency at home, and (c) was more than counterbalanced in other ways. I don't have the energy, honestly, to debate this. Your reply gets into partisan crap I don't want to discuss, and the details of why I say what I do are a matter of public record if you are willing to dig into it. Bypassing, that is, summary judgments from experts extrapolating from the opinions of news commentators and proceeding to facts about Trump's history, his financial entanglements, his hundreds of points of connection to wealthy Russians and FSB agents through his own businesses and family and campaign staff, on into White House business. These ties cross financial, real-estate, political, and technological fields. That's an end. I'm fried. I have pointed in the directions relevant for those interested. I was just sharing an opinion in a comments section.
