I think that flying is a Crane School technique, that's why Roshi didn't learn or teach his students how. He won't prohibit them from learning it because he's the type of guy that wants his students to grow and learn on their own and make their own personal choices. If you take the perviness out, Roshi is actually a really great dude.

Remember that at this time on the story, the use of Ki not only was very uncommon, it took Roshi 50 years to develop the Kamehameha. Just like we've seen with Goku and Yamcha, he gets shocked (and I guess a bit salty) every time someone manages to learn the move so soon.

4:21 No, he doesn't "just hold like that", he is flying, or floating, at the very least. Yeah, he pretty much was the first one who could levitate. Not sure if it was considered flying, especially by Z standards, but he could stay way above ground.

It is the same technique they used in Z to fly. Just with way smaller ki reserves to power their flight. That's why they are only floating at this point and not flying at top speed.

"I miss his-her...his...her(?) voice." XD That was one of the mysteries of the series growing up to me. "I didn't know Tien was the first one to fly." Yep. Tenshinhan and Chiaotzu are the first people to use Bukūjutsu (the flying technique) in the series. It's a technique that the Crane School teaches.

Funny what Tenshinhan claims Tao was so strong, when he already fare surpassed him. Levitation was in fact a Specialty of the Crane School, kinda fitting for a School named after a Bird. This Plotpoint is a big Plothole and shows how bad Torijama Plans ahead. Cause Tao sould definitly reconized the Kamehameha, or Gokus Gi. And he probably would have mastered Levitation.

Consider that Tao was on an ego trip and maybe he wasn't fazed by such details as the kamehameha or the gi from the old past. And just because Shen is the inventor of the flying technique doesn't mean all students of Crane School must learn it. Roshi knows techniques that his students have never knew or used.

You know ... there's something about this fight. WARNING! SPOILERS BELOW THIS PARAGRAPH! ------------------------------------ The way Chaotzu fights, the way he shows no emotion and his movement seem extremely deliberate and not wasteful, kind of reminds me of the way Goku fights in the next tournament (during the Piccolo Jr. Saga) after he's learned from Kami how to clear his mind of all thoughts and how to move without ringing the bell that's tied to his waist.

Yamcha would be more impressive than Krillin at this point. Krillin's been training under Roshi far longer than him but they're still around the same level.

There are so many mistake with the English translation. In the original Japanese version, master Roshi said that Kuririn beginner's Kamehameha is too weak to "clash" against the finger blast. He will loose if they shoot at each other.
