And THIS is why the creatures of Elpis are peer-reviewed before they're put to use, HERMES. Programmers have to provide a default value for data that's intended to be filled in later, and cute bird girls made of pure emotion are no different.

andthe true plot twist of the universe: everyone is dead, dying or in a state of wanting to die.

That's not so much a plot twist as it's just an observation of reality though... Hermes basically sent out Meteion from the garden of Eden on an intergalactic reality check... It's no wonder she broke...

Hermes really sent a bunch of emotion powered birb kids into space thinking nothing would happen.

I feel like I'm the only one in chat whose first thought is the poor little blue bird girl didn't deserve to be subjected to this.

Wasn't my first thought, but it was my final thought after processing my visceral reactions to the story. Meteion and the Meteia did not ask for or want what they found - they were exactly what Hermes made them, and paid the price for his lack of vision. They were victims too, every bit.

Hermes did the cosmic equivalent of deliberately putting a baby's hand in fire.

The chat about Emet at the start is so on point. If Azem had any idea how big things Emet could do with his fingernaps he'd be on the poor guy like white on rice. 0:40 I forgot how unsettling this music is. "2:20" Yes, that is quite enough. You're reminding me too much of Azem right now, he's not here I thought I could take it easy. 3:39 Agree with chat. Have her tell US the scary news first, then we decide what to do. Yup, that was NOT a good question to have the emotion reading birb girl to ask, Emet's on point. Some questions are better left unanswered, yes.

I’m genuinely curious. If it wasn’t Hermes and the Meteia, what would have happened to being about the Etheirys’s end if they were on the same path as the other worlds? I often hear if it wasn’t them, it would have been something else down the line.

They already choose to die if they're satisfied with their work. If they decided one day that they did all they could and the world is now perfect, I believe that would lead to a mass suicide.

I love this comment section. So glad to find people who aren't part of the "Hermes is just a soft sad boy who did nothing wrong" camp. Or the "Hermes has depression and isn't responsible for his own actions" camp. Hermes purposefully subverted the Peer Review system and abused the power of his position so that he didn't have to answer to anyone. He makes the decision to embrace pain and sorrow in order to say "fuck you" to the Convocation and Etheiryan society as a whole. He is the architect for what comes after.

You're talking as if the majority of people doesn't hold the same view as you. Just take a gander at Reddit and everyone hates Hermes's guts. What bothers me personally, is that people conflate his misdeeds with his likeability or lack thereof as a character-as if you cannot be intrigued by a villain who did something wrong

@@shinobirecords2018 Depends on what circles you're in. I think Hermes is a fascinating, tragic, and SERIOUSLY disturbing character whose choices horrified and infuriated me at points. Technically brilliant antagonist imo, but it is asking for drama if you talk about any of that on twitter or in certain creative fan circles.

@@janedoe885 Those are my feelings exactly, but I get a lot of flack from the "Hermes was just a dumb fucking idiot who should've known that the universe sucked in advance" crowd every time. As someone who has been through depression and experienced similar feelings, while fully aware in hindsight that they were not all quite right, it's always kind of hurtful to downplay the tragedy of his character like that

Agreed with most of this. Imo there are situations where personal responsibility can be mitigated (coercion, certain manifestations of mental illness where ability to fully understand what's happening/what you're doing/what the consequences are gets compromised) even if the actions themselves are still wrong and need to be stopped. There are laws surrounding that IRL because shit gets complicated there. With Hermes though, he did this freely while being fully aware circumstances were leading to the Final Days because he'd just been told. He chooses to act as judge, jury, and executioner--knowingly taking the role of a punishing god over his entire world without so much as giving them the chance to consider his concerns or criticisms. He had revolutionary knowledge of dynamis when that was barely known. His understanding was strong enough that he was able to successfully create Meteion. He could have, through Meteion and the established channels, challenged the definition of living beings and improved conditions for all the creations he claimed to worry about. Hell, especially being nominated to the position of Fandaniel and having the previous Fandaniel's ear he could have done that. It wasn't as important to him as declaring himself unlike everyone else in the world, whether through moral superiority or as an aberration. His creations, their well-being, and the lives of every other person in the world paled beside a deeper desire to differentiate himself. Guy's got some insane Paradise Lost-style parallels with the devil that way, coupled with apples/snakes/psych profile overlap. I really think he works as a character, and honestly even if it's not how I feel I'm generally pretty chill with people who wanna go soft boy take. Takes all types, it's fiction, all that. But good lord do people get upset if I talk about any of this stuff on certain sites.

@@shinobirecords2018 Absolutely getchu on all this! Honestly I didn't even take it as 'the universe sucks' or 'he's dumb for not realizing the universe sucks'--imo there was a combo of him being extremely innocent, sheltered, and ignorant about certain things (even the experiences of those around him on Etheirys!) combined with hugely irresponsible behavior that spiraled. He was definitely sick/depressed as hell, and as someone who's been through my own share of mental health crap and watched others go through it too I was getting visceral 'this person is not in a state where he should be in charge of anything holy shit' reactions pretty much right away. The situation was definitely tragic, but I think it's also important to bear in mind that mental illness doesn't mean it's okay to hurt others. How much the person is capable of being responsible for their own actions can get debated sometimes in really extreme and specific circumstances imo, but most cases even with mental illness that's in-play. I don't think Hermes is exempt basically. He's very human, just also very irresponsible.
