1:27 The little smile to himself after he says “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose” is lovely

Forty six years later and I still love this song, and it's writer...(genius) Listen to this song practically everyday, most times by Kris, though many other versions do it justice also...Kris singing it will always be my favorite version...

Thanks for posting this. I was looking for an early Kris Kristofferson version, as he sings it more passionately, and plays it slower.... and it really hits home that way.

My first hearing of this song was Kris on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. They introduced Kris, and Kris played it solo, on acoustic 6-string. Shortly after, I heard it on an alternative music station (the legendary WHFS, 102.3 FM in Bethesda, Md.), as recorded by Gordon Lightfoot. Somewhat later, Janis Joplin picked it up and did a whole different take on it. Years after that, I heard Dick Cerri say, on his weekly folk music radio show, that Kris had given Gordon exclusive rights to record the song, and that when Janis took off with her recording of it, Gordon was no longer on speaking terms with Kris. Don't know this for a fact, but that's what I heard. Nowadays, I personally consider both recordings to be masterpieces, along with the composition of the song itself. Fred

Kris didn't know Janis recorded it, so I'm not sure why Gordon held him responsible.

@@nitalay5317 I didn't say it happened; I said I heard someone who seemed to know, that it did. So it sounds like it probably didn't happen the way I heard.

Say goodbye to the man with that twinkle in his eyes, the smile, that voice that gave Janis her Bobby McGee, the one who sang 'Help me make it Through the Night & Sunday morning coming Down'. Admired by Cash & Dylan, stalked by Janis & Babs, but never snared. The Highwaymen drop another Golden leaf from their tree. 🍂 Farewell Kris, we'll still hear your voice, long after your sun went down. 🌅🕊️🌞

I just love this couple, their voices and the song. Can’t recalled seeing them or heard their names, even though I have heard and loved the song for years. ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏾

I played this for my husband, Steve, this morning and he said, That's Kris's song. I agreed it is. I like Janis's version, but absolutely no one does it as well as Kris! There are about a million versions out there, but this one from 1970 is my favorite. And I think all you other ladies will agree with me, it doesn't hurt that Kris is beautiful too!

"It won't sound pretty." Are you kidding? Rhodes Scholar, poet, soldier, singer, actor, courageous (One must be courageous to land a helicopter in Johnny Cash's yard!) and gentleman! RIP Kris.🌹🌹🌹

I really like this song. The words set a cool scene and a feeling that anyone but the tone deaf can sing. After listening to this, I'm gonna sing it right now.

Saw him in Minneapolis at O'Shaughnessy Auditorium in the early 70s. He had Rita Coolidge and the dude who did "I Can Help" with him. They came on late due to bad weather and didn't have time for a good sound check. Kris was a bit owly at the start, but settled down and put on a heck of a show.

Are you saying the 12-stringer is Zal Yanofsky? Of Mugwumps & Lovin' Spoonful fame? (Referred to as "Zally" in the Mamas & Papas song, Creeque Alley.) I was wondering who that was... Fred
