Hi guys, I'm glad, that so many of you interested in this Klon topic. Thank you all for your comments. While Kris has already addressed this in the video, I'd like to emphasize that we chose to create this video under such exclusive circumstances to highlight the subtle sonic differences and similarities between the original Klon and the Pelion. We developed the Pelion for guitarists who value a pedal that not only captures the sound of the original but also comes close in terms of dynamics and playing feel, without the need to shell out $5000 for it. With our small development team, we've tested numerous Klon clone pedals alongside originals, and our experience has shown that while some come close in sound, they fall short in dynamics and playing feel. Of course, it's challenging to convey feelings through a video, as these are subjective experiences. Nevertheless, this is one of the most important message of this video. I consider it highly important for a pedal to have its own 'flavor', with all its minor flaws and greatness, inspiring when you play it. The Pelion include every bits of an original Centaur. Of course, it's not perfect, nor does it aim to be, and perhaps it's precisely this subtle flavor difference that inspired for example Philip Sayce to use the Pelion instead of his original Klons on his new album. Enjoy this video!😉 Cheers, Albert

06:07 can't be said enough. People often get lost in magic diodes when in fact tolerances in parts make more of a difference. Especially pots often have huge tolerances and might lead to different sounds from one pedal to another (of the same type).
@stanislavmigra9 ай бұрын
exactly. And another thing is, parts has parasitic values. Like capacitor does not only has capacity. And these values also vary.

Man, you are the most accurate and safe player on KZbin when comparing gear. Which is awesome, and what other people could learn from! From this side it seems that you put a real effort into not projecting, and being as objective as possible. Just like in the Les Paul tonewood debate. In both examples, you have been as scientific and objective as you can be, all the while having a lot to say and compare about both pieces of gear. Really great video! :D

I'm so glad that I discovered early on that I don't really like Klon style pedals. I tried a few years ago, and even though they all sounded a little different, I wasn't a fan of what any of them were doing. Very strange, I know. (I haven't tried an Archer though, to be fair. I know how much people love them) But I'm glad because I never had to go down that particular rabbit hole, looking for the utimate Klon clone. (I could never afford an original anyway, so that was never in question) That's okay though, there are many other guitar gear rabbit holes to go down!

I have the Ceriatone Centura and love it as an always on boost it definitely adds “something” but tweaking my MXR ten band can also produce a very similar tone 😉 Great vid btw

I’m using the NUX copy and i run it as an always on 0 gain treble around one o’clock and volume to taste. It just adds a bit of sweetness. It also works as a beautiful drive if you bring up the gain.
@mr.giggles49959 ай бұрын
I currently own the NuX but I had Wampler and they definitely sound different to me. The Wampler had more clarity, more mids and treble I'd say.
@kierenmoore32369 ай бұрын
I agree. More clarity, airiness (as you say), treble, presence on the genuine Klon Centaur. It’s very noticeable in this video. Nice recording set-up.
@stanislavmigra9 ай бұрын
First thing. The production quality of this video is thru the roof. Like you normaly have pretty good sound, but this video is somewhere else. 👌👍 So, the Klon-out. They sound pretty radically different to me. The Klon in comparation sounds even transparent here, like I hear more of the amp and more of the guitar comming thru. And more note clarity, crispier attack. Paleon sounded pretty focused in uppermids, Id even say close to Marshall in a Box pedal (better then some dedicated MIAB pedals) at higher gain settings it even has some Distortion+ vibes.
@KrisBarocsi9 ай бұрын
Thanks so much my dude! Yeah, you clearly have a pair of trained ears 👏 Most people agree that the Bad Monkey sounds just like the Centaur in Josh‘s video. Just sayin‘ 😅
@DAZ02049 ай бұрын
Quite the difference. The original sounds fantastic. The other one sounds good too, but it’s missing the clarity and airiness of the original. But I came to hear Kris play, so it sounds great either way.
@GCKelloch9 ай бұрын
That may be true or not. Gain pedals will sound different into a guitar amp if the output of each isn't set exactly the same, and it's impossible to tell if the output is the same with all the variables between them.
@DAZ02049 ай бұрын
@@GCKelloch Ok, but uhhh…I’m commenting about IN THIS VIDEO. You know, the one where Kris is comparing how the two pedals sound? They don’t sound the same in the video and I described how they were different. Can they be dialed in to sound more similar? Quite likely, but that’s not going to change what we heard IN THE VIDEO. See?
@GCKelloch9 ай бұрын
@@DAZ0204 Sure, but this statement: "The original sounds fantastic. The other one sounds good too, but it’s missing the clarity and airiness of the original." very much implies that the difference is due to the pedals, rather than how the relative output affects the gain envelope in the amp. I don't see the reason for your seemingly sarcastic first sentence when so many guitar players don't even consider that the relative output can be what makes up much of the difference in gain pedals. As much as I love TPS, and the hosts, I see them run around in endless circles trying to explain gain pedal differences when it could just be the output difference.
@kierenmoore32369 ай бұрын

@DAZ02049 ай бұрын
@@GCKelloch It’s a comparison video. One sounds one way in the video, the other sounds another way. Kris tried to get them close and I stated the differences I heard that are present in the video. Everyone is fully aware that you can dial in both pedals different ways; it goes without saying. You can do that with any gear. Do you have anything else irrelevant to add or are we good now?

A friend has an original gold Klon which I played live on at least three occasions. I also owned a Soul Food and a KTR. I never liked any of them. I might be in the minority, but I think they're overrated. I don't mind hearing others use them, but not my thing.

I’ve tried a few Klones. Not yet tried the Kasleder, but all of his pedals are great. So far, my favourite Klone is Nordvang’s version - Nordvang keeps that chimey sweet open treble if you want it and without any of the harsh brittleness. And the gain in Nordvang’s Klone is really sweet too.

You are a lucky man 💪 I dig both of them, but I feel like on chords with more dirt the OG klon is nicer to my ears. But I do like the Kasleder on single notes a tiny bit more. I also know what you mean with the hard clipping thing, like my JHS notaklon vs the Ryra I can definitely hear that the JHS is more raw and less smoth

Yep they sounded different - but not massively. But hell they both sound beautiful and particularly when played well through 2 excellent amps and miked up and produced through equally awesome gear. I would be happy with either! How they feel under the fingers is what we rely on you telling us about. Thanks

Thanks for doing this shootout with your usual passion and in such an exclusive environment! Always a pleasure to listen to. Although not particularly a fan of this OD type, I must admit it has a magic of its own. The guys from Kasleder seem to have done a great job with thier clone. Don't crucify me, it's just a matter of taste IMO but I actually prefer it to the original, seems a little bit tighter and chimier. The original sounds a bit warmer and looser to my ears, or woodier as you say. Hope you enjoyed the gig, Kris!🤘
@antalantal23669 ай бұрын
I have never played a Klon but you are dead right in claiming that the important difference among ODs is to be found in the subtle dynamics of our playing. If we simply strum few chords and some licks a lot of ODs will not sound that different. Another other point on which I agree relates to the gain knob after two o'clock: this is the range in which many ODs fail to fully satisfy my ears.

Actually I think you can hear the difference quite well. To me, the Pelion sounds more focused, especially in the top end and is also a bit more chunky in the mids. While the Klon is a bit more open sounding but can also be a bit fizzy. My personal favourite is the Pelion. Well done Albert!
