I'm finally modifying my Harley Benton Fusion-II guitar. What exactly will I mod though?
Check you the video to figure it out. Enjoy Guitar Tweakz!
** Why the ANZEIGE (=Ad) message? **
According to german laws everyone has to mark their videos as advertisements as soon as there's a single "subject relevant" product, tag or link in it. Even if you didn't get paid for making that video. Sounds confusing and it really doesn't help the viewer to see which is a paid review and which isn't. But it's the law so whatever...
--- The line of truth: Is this actually a paid review? No it isn't. (I update this line for every video).

Hey Kris, These vibrating sanding machines are awesome for more delicate work. If you want to sand faster a random orbital sander is way faster in my experience. I got mine (Bosch something)for about 50€ at obi and I am pretty pleased with it. I sanded my tabletop way more often than I intended to.. I messed up the finish twice sooo.. 😅

Thank you for boost my confident with HB guitars. I decided to purchase HB Fusion-T HH HT EB OCT. I love features of Fusion series, but I am a little bit sad because they go with H-H instead of S-S config for a Tele. Right away, I will swap stock pups with Bill Lawrence L-90 pair. For my ultimate DREAM Tele, I will buy a premium kit from Warmoth and build S-S config Tele for my classic sounding dream Tele. I listened to your DIY Tele with tremolo arm, it sounds awesome. It encourages me a lot.

Good job. I understand what you mean about the humbuckers and also agree that the guitar sounds great with the coil split in. Sometimes when the humbuckers get to hot and gets this extremely high output, they tend to sound sterile or clinic in a way. Losing personality. I think it is no coincidence the originals are designed as they are. But we are all different so it is always a good thing every time a guitarist finds his dream tone.

Yeah, those split sounds are insane, really thinking about getting this just for those tones (can hardly otherwise justify to buy superstrat #55 LOL). Totally agree, oil back n sides are mandatory! Really interested if this method works to remove the poly, on flat sides yes, but on the curves, and on the inside of the horns... ouch, maybe dremel time but really hard not to mess up the curves with a small barrel considering the force needed. Heat gun doesn't go well with thick poly either, maybe a chemical solution? if I go for it I might just lightly sand the gloss to make it matte, although I would love oil, with indeed a subtle stain. Oh, and love how your work bench is actually a... bench... weeeell, Grandma's bench ;P
@fedest
@fedest 3 жыл бұрын
Ohh Wow!! That's quite reassuring: I have the same Harley Benton, and same experience with the original pickups: love the split sounds, but not so much the humbucker sounds. And interestingly enough, I ordered the same replacement pickups: Fishman Fluence Classics! :-D I got them delivered a couple of weeks ago, but haven't had the time to install them yet... I was hoping to do that this weekend, but maybe I'll just wait until part 2 (and 3?) of the video is out, to see if the change is worth it, and maybe get a couple of good ideas ;) (no body sanding for mine, though!). Looking forward to next ones!

I think that HB has a satin neck, so I assume you won’t touch it.. what would you have done to satin a super high glossy poly finished neck? Does the neck’s wood type really matter in this process? Man when it comes to modding guitars I always have sooo many questions. It’s just something I love doing and learning about to the point I would buy ANY Harley Benton and turn it into a beast. Looks like that’s what they’re supposed to be for. Cheers man, love all your contents, they’re just sooo useful
@bluedawn2669
@bluedawn2669 3 жыл бұрын
I can share my personal experience: you can tape off the sections of the neck that you don‘t want to sand at the headstock and the neck joint. Use multiple layers and make a nice curve. Then you sand, and I would suggest to start rough, 50-100grit. Poly is super tough and you will need to change the sanding paper a lot. Then go up to 400 wet sanding, use a tiny amount of wax if you want and done. If you want to re-finish the neck that is a different story and a lot more work. I would recommend an oil finish with one penetrating oil and one oil that hardens the surface. Apply the oil with the sanding paper, let dry for 10 minutes, then firmly rub in the gunk with a cloth. Then wait for 24 hours until applying the next layer.

Kris: great stuff as always! I'm no expert like you but must ask: why didn't you protect the front side of the guitar during all that sanding? To my layman's eyes, all that dust on the work surface could not be good for the finish on the top, right? Even though it is the same thick polyurethane. Or you didn't protect the front because you will polish the entire axe anyway? Cheers and looking forward to part II!
@KrisBarocsi

Hey, poly is so crazy sturdy, there’s literally zero scratches on the top after all that work. I was ready to polish it if necessary but there’s no reason for it. It’s maybe hard to believe, but that’s how hard polyurethane is. Cheers

Hey Kris, can you elaborate on the stainless steel frets. What don't you like about them is it a question of feel or sound? Great looking forward to it. BTW with regards to your super strat, I have an old Nuno Bettencourt Washburn models that I got in the mid nineties. Blocking out the trem block with an extra wedge block also contributed to the extra liveliness of that guitar.

Sanding sux! 🤮😵 But getting the thick goop layer off ought to make the wood glow. I love wood tones over paint. 🤩😍👍

Wait Aren't these the Roswell alnico humbuckers? I'm listening to this demo and be like: wait, I know this blunt humbucker sound I have the same problem as you. I had them in my LP copy and was mainly using them split and out of phase so I've put them into Epi LP special because they look cool Still left them with reversed wiring dpdt switch so they become humbuckers when you pull the knob

I have the HSH, and I agree that the humbuckery sound isn't there. It's not the pickups though. I tried some Lindy Fralins Modern Pafs and the difference was minimal. It's stratier than a strat. Maybe the active pickups will make a difference, but I believe the frets and the roasted neck play a huge part in the sound. The thing I like the least is the switch placing. You can't funk without knocking it out of position 😎

Ha ha - this is exactly the same 'pain' I went through with a Gear 4 Music Strat - I'm not sure I'd do it again but the Paulownia wood underneath the finish was beautiful... If you'd like before and after pics let me know how to get them to you : )

Maybe one day. Not now though. I like the contrast between the roasted natural neck and the silver finish. 🤷‍♂️
