To be honest I never thought to reball the board and not the IC as I did till now...... However when I see something new I would try it as soon I can, so I could try to use this method monday morning when I go to the lab, I'm really curious about what (disaster) I'll make........ Anyway thanks a lot to share your skills, very appreciated.

why would you do that? if to solder balls to a pcb first, it will be difficult to fix any troubles on it because pcb has a lot more thermal conductivity and you will have to preheat it first. it also heats the pcb twice (first on ball soldering and the second on gpu soldering)

Thank you. I can make a second part, but the soldering process is simple. You can use this method for every PCB if you have enough clearance to place the stencil. You can also reball the chip with this method.

There is risk that stencil would be stuck to the PCB ... put tiny kapton tapes under the stencil in every corner , then it is easier to pry off.
@northwestrepair
@northwestrepair Жыл бұрын
It will also allow paste to squeeze it's way under where you don't want it. For that reason, this method is unpredictable for large area like that because these stencils are warped.
@mikegaming4924
@mikegaming4924 Жыл бұрын
PCB prevents the stencil from warping that easily. You can also use lower temp solder paste and only use underheat to form the balls, which eliminates any warping. Krisfix also said in the video to not push the paste too much, otherwise it goes under the stencil. But yes, sometimes this method needs couple tries to get all balls to form properly. Also you need to check the height of the balls after first application&heat. If some are lower and smaller, you should reapply some paste there and heat it again.
@mikegaming4924
@mikegaming4924 2 ай бұрын
I once again tried to place the kapton tape pieces to the corners, and like northwestrepair said, this caused the solder paste to seep incorrectly. The stencil has to be without such corner tape pieces, otherwise it will be too high up from the PCB surface.

great work! is there any advantages of reballing the board rather than the chip? or just a different approach?
@KrisFixGermany

Basically for GPU reball you need to heat the chip 3 times ( remove, reball and install). With this board reballing process you can heat the chip only 2 times. Decreasing the heat stress.
