This 1971 Kenwood Receiver Is a Beast! Does It work?

Kenwood called it The Jumbo receiver because it’s huge in size and on features. A drum machine, spring reverb, microphone inputs, guitar inputs and timer just to name a few. Let’s open it up and see if we can get it to work for a demo.

Okay, I looked it up: the B.A.D. band, the particular album's title was a cheeky little dig at the British PM's address. The song also was in the movie Soundtrack: "Flashback." I should get extra points for that bit of trivia. :-)

Ha! Yes there is, Bob. That’s the button I keep turning on and off when I was trying the FM. Doesn’t seem to be the issue. Stay tuned.

Ries, thanks for your interest, but the great majority of the components I repair on my channel are for my own personal collection and are not for sale. I wish you great luck finding a KR-6170 of your own. They do come up occasionally on eBay. Take care.

Is there an FM muting control that is activated?

Yeah, there's a switch for FM muting and that's the one I keep selecting and unselecting in the video. Still nothing. Off-video I was able to briefly hear the FM for a second or two, but it abruptly shut off, never to return.

Would be interested to see if the “drum machine” board has markings from another manufacturer or if Kenwood developed that circuit themselves. Probably would have been cheaper to just license something from one of the organ manufacturers of the day.

Schematic for the drum machine is in the service manual. It has 5 sounds: Bass Drum, Conga, Claves, HiHat and "SD" (Snare Drum?). Programming is accomplished via a diode matrix. All analog. No TTL or CMOS ICs! Sound generation is via simple LRC circuits and (what looks like) some white noise generation and shaping.

Yes, SD is snare drum. The board appears to be similarly styled and marked as the others, so I believe it’s a Kenwood. Yeah, this thing isn’t discreet on the outside, but it’s discrete on the inside.
